1 HE CHIP FLYER Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild Newsletter 150th Chapter of the AAW December 2002 Page 1 Season s Greetings W Message from the President ell, it's time to take a short break from a busy Guild schedule and enjoy the Christmas season. Not that I don't plan on doing some turning; it may be the first chance I have had since September. My wife has a long and growing list of gifts that she would like to see me make. Maybe I'll get some of them done. I think this calls for a relaxed turning attitude so I'll get them done if I get them done. In January we kick off the winter session with Doug Newlove who has prepared an in depth slide show covering bowl making from start to finish. hen in February, we have Vince Lebert who will show how to turn miniatures, and how to make your own tools for this work. We also have Leon Michal in March and Jack Brown in April, but more about that in later newsletters. We are planning a Saturday workshop with Art Leistman, President of the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild who will be touring a number of guilds in Ontario. It looks like a interesting session. I hope to see many of you at the Christmas party on December 12. Don't forget the toys for the Salvation Army and Sick Kids hospital in Hamilton, as well as ornaments for the guests. Be sure to bring your latest turning for an informal turning competition, this time judged by the guests. We will have the Jet Lathe raffle; we have about 10 tickets left which you can purchase at the party. Finally, we will have a few surprise door prizes, and if we have snow, a visit from Santa Claus. C O N E N S On behalf of all the executives of the Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild, may you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2 PAGE 2 HE CHIP FLYER Lots of Experience in wo Hours E ugen Schlaak packed many years of turning experience into a two hour presentation at the November meeting. Eugen's primary goal was to demonstrate bowl and vessel hollowing techniques, but along the way he passed on many turning tips he had picked up over the years. Eugen began with shaping a basic bowl, with the rim curving out, the simplest to turn and the one recommended for beginners to try. For this he used bowl gouges and scrapers to clean up the difficult spots at the bottom. He then moved on to more complex shapes with rim curving in, which required an small undercut on the inside surface. He was able to do most of the work with a gouge and scraper, but at some point the tools can't reach far enough under the rim and hollowing tools come into play. As the bowls change into vessels and become deeper and narrower, simple gouge and scraper can't do the job as they cantilever too far over the tool rest for stable cutting. Eugen demonstrated a number of deep hollowing tools that he has tried over the years. All these tools use a high speed steel tip which is ground like a scraper, complete with burr left by the grinder. It is the burr that does the cutting, removing small wisps of wood until it wears down, at which time the cutter simply starts tearing the wood. One tool he demonstrated was the RS2000 which uses an arm brace to stabilize the tool as it hangs way over the edge. It looks like a really great way to dislocate a shoulder and Eugen agreed. He warned that it was a very dangerous tool and should be used very carefully, working your way up to deeper and deeper reaches as you get familiar with it. he more sensible tool is a long scraper with a right angle outrigger which helps to stabilize the tip position. As the tip tries to dip down, the outrigger arm resists the movement. It has limitations as to how deep it can hallow. Eventually, the metal body starts to deflect from the force and you need to use thicker tool arms as you go deeper into the vessel. his type of tool was first introduced to the Guild by Jack DeVos at his first demonstration, and has been copied and improved on by members since. Jack's original tool had a spring loaded thickness gauge attached to the outrigger which helped to determine wall thickness while turning. A very nice tool, but limited to vessels about 6" deep or less. he next tool in the evolution is the current hot item for deep hollowing. his device again uses an outrigger. he difference is in the tool rest, which consists of a bar above and below, allowing the tool to slide between them. hese bars keep the tools from moving off the horizontal plane, while still allowing the tool to move sideways and at an angle to make the cut. his tool was first demonstrated to us by Frank Sudol who was hollowing 24" deep x 6" dia. vessels with it at the time, who knows how deep he is going by now. A number of manufacturers are offering this as an add-on to their lathes, or you can buy a floor mounted version that is very robust and works with any lathe. It is likely the safest to use for the turner, but requires a lot of setup time and a couple of guerrillas to load the blank on the lathe. Eugen also showed the use of the laser mounted on an overhead outrigger to indicate wall thickness. his may only be useful for lathes that exhibit very little vibration. As well, you would need a laser with a very tiny spot, most of the cheap lasers available as pointers have very wide (1/4" dia.) spots making it difficult to (Continued on page 3)

3 PAGE 3 HE CHIP FLYER W determine wall thickness. He had also converted a machine tool oil mister over to an air blaster that he can direct into the vessel to keep the chips cleaned out. During his demo/discussion of hollowing tools, Eugen related a number of very useful tips to the members. he most important was to make sure the cutting tool was exactly at the turning center of the lathe, otherwise as you move into the vessel the tip will move above or below center leading to catches and poor cutting. Another was that if you are seriously considering turning bowls larger that 12", get a variable speed lathe, as you cannot reasonably prepare a rough blank without getting the speed down below 200 rpm. hanks Eugen for an interesting and entertaining evening. Frank Ditomaso OW! When I counted Hands and Feet and divided by 4 at Hands-On our last Hands-On, my total was 54!. hat s the best attendance ever. You know that your attendance is the best applause you can give to our demonstrators and teachers. It sure makes one feel good, thank you. I did intend to stand at the last meeting ( I was bugged out ) I had a nasty virus. hanks to all those who helped me this past year. Without our demonstrators and teachers, Hands-On would still be a dream. We all thank you, Dave Page, Joanne Hallman, Frank Ditomaso, Mike Brazeau, Malcolm Cummings, Cliff Rose, Norm Kemp, Jim Fretz, Jim Campbell, Doug Bremner, and Robin LeSage. If I have forgotten any one I am sorry, it is not intentional (just the gray matter that sits under my hair is getting old) he next Hands-On and Woodturning 101 will be the second hursday in January (9th), see you there! I wish you all the best Christmas ever. Norm Kemp Wood Raffle he November Wood Raffle was a tremendous success. hanks to all who donated to the wood table. We are also grateful for the donation by Exotic Woods Inc. of Burlington. he response by our membership in purchasing raffle tickets resulted in revenues in excess of $ his certainly helps to pay the rent, etc. Raffle Information for New Members he Guild conducts two raffles: For the Donor Raffle, persons who donate wood etc. to the raffle table, receive a ticket for some small item which is then raffled in a donor's raffle. For the Wood Raffle, all items on the table are raffled. ickets are sold at the break for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. ickets are drawn until all items are removed from the table. he first tickets drawn get the choicest items. It can be quite entertaining to watch the scramble at the table!. It is all in good fun and whether or not you take something home, you all benefit as revenues are used to help operate the Guild. (i.e.: rent, tools, supplies, demonstrators' stipends etc.) It is your participation that makes your Guild a success!! John Hinds

With the chuck spinning, any projections from the main body are virtually invisible. One way to make the projecting parts visible and minimize the damage that they do if they are inadvertently touched, is to put a band of some sort of stretchy material over the chuck to pad it and to make it visible in rotation. A brightly colored rubber band is good if you can find one wide enough to cover all of the offending parts. Alternatively, elasticized fabric for making suspenders works well and that is what we use to make our chuck cuff. We have also butt-jointed the fabric so that it can be used without unbalancing the chuck at all. An overlap seam or welt would provide a weight bias. Whether or not you buy a chuck cuff from Lee Valley or make one, do yourself a favor when you are turning and at least put a strip of duct tape around your chuck to protect yourself. Another alternative you might like to consider is building a very simple plywood guard that you can adjust to shroud the chuck. After you have had your knuckles rapped once or twice with chuck jaws, any of these solutions will begin to look attractive.
