1 THE CHIP FLYER Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild Burlington, Ontario From the President s Notebook In the midst of this never ending winter, I have been reading the odd book as a departure from constant web surfing on my ipad. Currently it is A Splintered History of Wood by Spike Carlsen. Not quite as riveting as a John Grisham novel but for a woodworker/woodturner fairly interesting. Carlsen covers all manner of the uses of wood, the history of its uses, its characteristics, people made famous by working with it through the ages and tools used to work with it. In Chapter Three, he visits skew expert Alan Lacer at his old barn shop in Minnesota and takes an all day turning course where the end result is an eight inch long golf tee. This is a bit like the day some of us spent with Cindy Drozda a few years back for a whole day small group hands-on and Mike Brazeau made beads & coves in the morning and a small finial in the afternoon. For me personally it gave me new skills with the spindle gouge that I treasure now each time I use it. Carlsen s comments about the current age of woodturning I found dead on. To quote him For most of the twentieth century, turning was done to make parts for bigger projects-table legs, bedpost and stairway spindles. As an art form it was the province of few. But when the craft fairs of the 1960s and 1970s emerged, suddenly turnings weren t just parts of other things but things in and of themselves. Turners had a venue for getting their work out in front of lots of people. They got immediate feedback. and Turning can also provide instant results. It s the only kind of woodworking where the raw material can have a bird perched on it in the morning and be used as a bread bowl that evening There is no doubt many of you have already experienced this side of turning. I often say when speaking about our guild and its work that it has been years since I have seen a table leg on the Show & Tell table. Another quote Turners are the Hells Angels of the woodworking world. It s a craft where anything goes. Some in the established woodworking world will frown upon turners-but they have a lot of fun. I would add that they are a great group of people to spend time with in so many ways. Coming Up Soon Mar 13: Hands On & W T 101 Mar Apr 20: 9: Bob Rollings of WG Hands-On: Off Centre Turning. 2 About fifteen years ago, the late Dale Nish, founder of Craft Supplies USA and one of the greatest contributors to the rejuvenation of woodturning through his two books starting in the mid 1970s, was demonstrating at the Woodstock Woodshow. I often reflect back on that day and how fortunate I was to be able to attend his one hour demonstration on turning a bowl from fresh wood. He spoke of turning as one of the most difficult aspects of woodworking because of the high degree of hand-eye coordination that is required and the fact that the turner essentially controls the tool and the machining of the wood at fast speeds. I just purchased his recent book on Christmas Ornaments to add to our guild library. Obviously we would not have a twenty-year old active organization with about 150 members if they were not attracted to these aspects of woodworking that I have touched on. One of the principal goals of our guild is to share our own knowledge of turning with others, but to also make available opportunities to learn through demonstrations by our own members or invited demonstrators. There is a perfect opportunity coming up on March 29 for any and all of our members to broaden their experience in this modern day world of woodturning. Michael Hosaluk is one of the modern day Masters of Woodturning. In his demonstrations, Michael is renown for taking advantage of the fact that a project can be completed quickly on the lathe and I am sure he will not disappoint us this time. Why don t you come out and see. Everyone from absolute novice to master turner will gain from the experience. I know that it will be a day you will not forget and will go home with several $40 tips. Mike In Memoriam Recently GHWG lost two of our long standing members. Victor Aubin passed away on January 28, His life was celebrated with family and friends on February 8, 2014 at Roxborough Presbyterian Church. His ready smile and his cheery disposition will be missed. Victor was one of our many tireless volunteers, as he arranged and managed the coffee, drinks and cookies during each meeting. Victor had been a GHWG member since Don Burgess passed away peacefully at the Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at the age of 95. One of our most senior members Don joined the guild ten years ago in 2004 at the youthful age of 85. Mike spoke with Don's widow Gery recently and she said that Don really treasured the time he spent attending guild meetings and sharing turning experiences. A celebration of Don's life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Burlington on March 22nd at 2:00 PM 2

4 Early Planning for a GHWG Sale in the Fall of 2014!! At our January meeting Mike B. announced that Derek Dix was exploring the possibility of putting together a group guild sale of woodturning. There are a myriad of unanswered questions and details that would have to be put in place before this can happen. The concept would likely be a combination of individual tables by members who have sufficient work to offer a table and a group table where individuals might only have a few pieces included. All items would have to be maker identified, priced and catalogued with sales handled by a single checkout point. Currently Derek is looking at a location in Dundas with the timing to be coincident with another craft event already happening at the same time, most likely a Saturday & Sunday in early October of In addition to table charges, a commission would be paid to the guild to help cover costs of space rental and advertising etc. Derek needs to have some quality feedback as to how many people would participate and to what extent. Volunteers are also going to be needed to deal with the logistics. The cost and volunteer effort to put this on could be fairly significant and it is difficult to predict the success or failure at this early stage. We have set up an address on our web page contacts area for Derek who can be reached at memberatlarge1@ghwg.ca A Note from our Hands-On Co-ordinator On March 13 th 2014 we will have a great evening!! Charles Jordan As Wood Turners, we all love working on the lathe, with sharp tools and lots of shavings. Sanding and finishing is very often a frustrating and challenging part that sometimes takes longer than creating our piece. We all finish our work in different ways. This evening will strictly focus on finishing. Don Svob, Norm Denault, Morley McArthur and Michael Brazeau will all be there to show us how it s done. Join us for what will be a very exciting and informative evening. Looking forward to seeing you there. Charles 4

6 150th Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Mar 2014 Vince Lebert of OWG Production Turning of Small Things Reporter: John Whitnall February 20, 2014 presented some unpleasant weather but a good sized group still managed to brave the elements to witness the advanced skills of Vince Lebert from the Ontario Woodturning Guild (Pickering). Perhaps this demo could also have been titled For Every Thing You Can Turn You Can Make a Jig. Vince brought a large variety of jigs and custom tools and then proceeded to show us how to make them and use them. To appreciate the demo, one has to first appreciate some of Vince s perspective. First when he makes ornamental bird houses, he makes 30 to 40 at a time. Secondly, if he can make something in less time with a jig, then the effort to make the jig is worth it. Time is Money drives many of Vince s innovations. Although this motivation is not the same for every turner, Vince s ingenuity in adapting his turning to improve each step of an item s production was truly inspiring. Vince s demo turned into a rapid fire series of examples of his unique adaptations, tips and specialized tools. Here is a description of some of them: For turning very small items like the finial on the tops of ornamental bird houses, Vince has ground down the tip of a live centre, so that it presents a very tiny point to hold a small diameter spindle without the excess pressure that may split it. By combining the ground down live centre with a pen mandrel, Vince is able to produce a beautiful handle in just a few minutes all the way to finished state. The handle can then be fitted to a magnifying glass or an ice cream scoop. Golden Horseshoe Woodturners Guild Chip Flyer 6

7 150th Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Mar 2014 Vince Lebert of OWG Production Turning of Small Things Cont d By then demonstrating the making of various sizes of wooden bangles, Vince showed us adapted tools and jigs at each step of the process. First a block of wood is bored out with a Lee Valley 2 plug cutter. The chuck has raised metal spacers between the jaws so that the boring tool will not hit the chuck as it turns. Then the hole is expanded to the desired size with a flat bottom cutter mounted in the tail stock. The cutter is made from the blade of a portable power planer mounted into a morse taper with a set screw to allow for changing the hole diameter. The inside surface of the bangle can then be finished before transferring to the jig that has been made to accommodate each size of bangle. When the bangle is slipped over the jig, a special live tail stock centre is brought up to the end of the jig so that it spreads the jaws of the jig holding the bangle firmly in place for finishing the outside. Even in the making of the jigs other special tools are used. Vince described how he has a holder for his router which slides along the rails of the lathe that allows him to make perfectly horizontal cuts in a jig that is being held in the head stock. This allows for precise 90 degree cuts in a round object that would not be possible with a band saw. Another innovation was a set of round wooden jaws adapted to a chuck with precise steps created that allows for firm holding of round objects (like a bangle) without any external marks that would be left by a normal chuck s jaw. Altogether Vince left us inspired for both the ability to create beautiful work very quickly and the limitless possibilities of adapted jigs and tools.
