American Association of Woodturners Seattle Chapter, December, 2012 December is the annual Christmas Party in lieu of a formal meeting. In addition to the Yankee gift exchange (~$20 and something you would like to receive aligned with woodturning), we will be drawing tickets from the setup and cleanup volunteers. There will not be a wood raffle nor display table. Also we have a light potluck more like heavy Inside this Issue President s Message 1 Monthly Program 1 Mentors 3 Want Ads 10 Officers/Contact People 11 appetizers Congratulations and Thank You to Jim Tucker (Vice President) and Fred Floyd (Secretary) for two year terms beginning in January. I urge others to get involved we always need volunteers. It is the holiday season and the presents/ornaments are being turned! With so many projects in the works, my shop became cluttered and messy it was on the verge of becoming a safety issue so remember to keep things cleaned up for safety s sake because I want to celebrate the holidays (and all other days) with all of our piece parts in the right place. Turn Safely! Tis the Season Remember, December 13 is this year s Christmas Party. Our meeting will be very different from our usual meetings-no wood raffle, no display table, no demonstration on the program. Members are asked to bring some sort of snack to share. This is not a dinner, but usually there are all different sorts of goodies to eat. Then, the fun begins. Two activities are planned. Gifts are on hand for all who have helped make our meetings go. Then we will be having our Yankee gift exchange this is usually great fun! Seattle s Web Site We are at:

3 Seattle Mentors Below are listed the current mentor for Seattle Woodturners. They want to help! They are excellent sources. Should they not know an answer, they will know how to find an answer. Use them. Bob Sievers (off-center (360) Allan Rumpf (beginning spindle (425) Hal (425) John (425) Corey (425) Jack (425) Jack (425) Les Dawson (beginning (425) John (425) Important Announcement Concerning Membership Renewal Dues for 2013 are $30 until December 31st at which time they'll rise to $35. The quoted amounts are for an ed newsletter. Mailed hardcopies for those that do not have will cost $12 more to offset the costs of printing and postage. Everyone should verify his/her information in the database as they renew membership. Please bring checks or cash to the club meetings and see Tom Johanson near the entry door. If you want to avoid the line at the renewal table, mail your check for membership dues to Tom Johanson, NE 113th Pl, Kirkland, WA along with a stamped self-addressed envelope and any address/phone/ changes and he'll gladly mail you your 2012 membership card. Thanks!. Seattle Truly Has Talented Members This year among the numerous artistic demonstrators presenting to the Seattle AAW were several of our own. How good they were. We started off the year with Jon McGill presenting terrific information on ornamental turning, in March we learned much from the panel discussion led by Rick Terney, Jack Wayne, John Moe and Fred Holder, we enjoyed the minisymposium featuring Bonnie Klein, Jack Wayne and Fred Floyd, in September Vern Tator gave up good hints on making beautiful pepper mills and in November John Shrader presented his outstanding ornament. That is a lot of local talent. Thanks folks, I know you put a lot of effort in preparing your presentations. We also enjoyed members from other, near clubs that further enlarged our abilities to turn. Next year, 2013, looks equally good. Our new program chairman, Jack Wayne, has lined up more great talent. I don t yet have the calendar finished but the list is good: Safety in the Shop and Field (possible chainsaw care and feeding) Jimmy Allen "A different take on boxes", Michael Merideth, "Spheres and Finishes" Larry Hauch "Spindle turning for fun and profit", Marco Berea "Swiss magic and yodeling" (& All day demo), Jack Wayne on natural edged bowls, our Mini Symposium, Don Derry "Shapes and Form" (& All-day Demo), Round-table Discussion Forum. There are still a couple of months to be filled, but things look quite good!
Committees Need Club Members I believe there are a few groups in the club needing help. One that I know of is the newsletter. I enjoy working on the newsletter and unless run out of town on a rail am happy to continue. However, there is always the possibility that I may not be available in any given month and that someone is needed to step in take care of current problems. Also, we need new blood to add freshness to this thing. If you are interested in helping out and perhaps (probably) taking over after me please contact me at any meeting or at my woodguy103@aol.com. Other committees having similar needs please let me or another member of the board know as soon as possible. 4 VOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEER Now that I have your attention, if you have not been turning in signed volunteer tickets at each meeting that you volunteer services-set up, take down, bringing in wood for raffle, that sort of thing that helps make meetings smooth and comfortable-you are missing out on some neat possibilities. At our Christmas meeting each year we draw names out of the can holding those tickets. When your name is drawn some sort of reward is given-wood, tools, things of this nature is awarded. It takes many people doing a lot of jobs to set up and run our meetings properly. This is an attempt for the club to say. Thanks for the help. Don t miss out! Info Needed One of the goals of the newsletter is to pass on information that might be relevant for turners, be they beginners or old hands. None of us is good enough that we can t continue to learn, to enhance what we turn. To that end the club offers opportunities for members to watch many of the masters who visit us on daylong seminars, occasionally a full day of turning with them, Sawdust Sessions and the like. Another thing available are opportunities like those being offered by our member Bonnie Klein at Anderson Ranch or in Port Townsend. If you know of a member, or another other person presenting woodturning, even woodworking opportunities for members I would appreciated being told so we can alert membership in a timely manner. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I found it very interesting the way John took such a seemingly complex looking project and explained how to do it. Multifaceted, detailed, but logical. Care, patience and eventually a wonderful item. Great gift for someone important in your life. 8
9 Duval Auto Parts Good People At December s board meeting president Rick Terney related an incident he had to deal with concerning his chainsaw. In cutting something the motor seized up and he couldn t fix it himself. He took it out and got an estimate to fix the machine-something like $500. Being thrifty Rick decided to fix it himself. He bought the parts (Craig s list, Ebay??) and after multiple hours and many frustrations he was ready to quit. In talking with a friend it was suggested he try some outfit up in Duval as see if they couldn t help. So Rick tromped up to Duval Auto Parts with his Stuff, talked with them and they said they wanted to see what they could do. About $100 later he got back his chainsaw completely fixed, serviced and ready for work. Rick was very impressed with this and wanted to share his good find with the membership. Remember Duval Auto Parts! In the Library for December There will be no books or DVD s at the December meeting. I will remind everyone before the January meeting to return their checked out items to the January meeting. The holidays are the perfect time to sit down and watch all those DVD s and read those books with cookies, a beverage of choice and a crackling fire in the fireplace. In Which Direction Should Sawdust Sessions Go? Recentkt the Board sent out a survey to membership trying to find out what it wanted for organized sawdust sessions this next year. The newsletter has sent out several requests for member input in the past-no response! I don t know what seems to be causing such member apathy. On a survey in which most should be interested I got a rousing 12 responses. NOT EVEN 10% OF THE MEMBERS RESPONDED. I guess you only get out of something what you put into it. Very few seem to be putting into it. We need member help. In January we will try the survey in house at our Redmond meeting. Let s see, no cookies, coffee or pop until you turn in a survey. Naw, that is silly. What can we do, though. We have a large membership. Once you join the club, join in the activities. I did hear desires to know more of the members, desires for local sawdust sessions, some really great other comments on the 12 surveys turned in (several of which I think we can meet in coffee time discussions. This club was the beginning club in the Puget Sound region. We helped many others get going. I remember members coming from up in the tip of the Peninsula, across in Bremerton and many from Bellingham region. We have a fine past. Lets work the as great a future. It looks as though January 19 may be our first 2013 Sawdust Session on hollowing.
