1 American Association of Woodturners Seattle Chapter, November, 2012 Last month s silent auction was impressive and several members got away with some prize wood for pennies on the dollar. Thank you to all who contributed to the effort. We will be voting for Vice- President and Secretary at this month s meeting. In addition, one of our premier turners, John Schrader, will be getting us ready for the holiday season as he demonstrates tree ornaments. December is the annual Christmas Party in lieu of a formal meeting. In addition to the Yankee gift exchange, we will be drawing tickets from the setup and cleanup volunteers. If you forgot to write your name on a ticket and put it in the can for each occasion you volunteered this month is your last opportunity to do so. If anyone would like to donate money or good equipment/tools for the volunteer raffle, please see a board member. Rick Terney John Shrader Brings Christmas Our demonstrator for the November meeting will be John Shrader, who will show us how to make his unusual Colorwood Christmas tree ornaments. An example is shown in the accompanying photograph. Several steps in this process are made with other shop tools, (table saw, band saw, etc.), so John will show a video of these steps. The icicle is spindle turned, the bulb is segmented and turned using bowl turning techniques, and since one typical blank of Colorwood will yield 5 ornaments, there are elements of production turning involved. The ornament pictured just won a semi-finalist award in the Wood Central Christmas Ornament contest contests/ornaments/. Click on this web site, then click on View the Winners. 3 3 Shrader neer/manager who worked gee whiz technologies (electric cannons, death rays, hypervelocity impact, etc.) while he was working full time. He now spends about 20 hours a week on various aspects of woodturning. His muse leads him to designs that require high precision, which his engineering background helps him realize. He currently sells his work at 5 galleries in the Northwest and 2 on line galleries. He has shown in the Bellevue Artsfair for the last 4 years, and in 2011 won one of the Bellevue Arts Museum Carol Duke Awards for Excellence that included a check for $1,000. Thanks!. Segmented Woodturning Symposium to be Held in October The Segmented Woodturners is an internet-based chapter of the AAW with over 500 members around the world. The third symposium, completely dedicated for segmented woodturning is scheduled for October 18-21, 2012 at Lake Tahoe, CA. Information may be found in their 8-page brochure detailing the event at There is a 30 minute DVD with highlights of the 2010 symposium available from our library. Worth checking out!
4 4 This month Biz has prepared another of her interesting crossword puzzles. I cannot place it here because I don t know how to copy and paste an Adobe PDF document. If anyone knows how, I would appreciate some coaching on that issue. I have attached the puzzle after this newsletter. I will send the answers later. I still have the carving station bags fashioned after the Dixie Biggs bag available. They are 14 x 6 with a rubber nonslip sleeve. Pattern sheet included. $20 ea. Proceeds go towards purchasing more library materials. Biz Jaskovsky, Librarian Seattle Chapter of AAW Meeting Minutes: October 2, 2012 Board Meeting Tom J.: We ll start collecting 2013 dues (@ $30) beginning at the October meeting. After January, dues become $35. We should have a 2013 plan by next meeting. Rick T.: Silent Auction will take place at the October meeting. We ll also do the standard raffle as well. Holiday Party: volunteer raffle to include Glue, Sealer, and possibly a free admission to an all-day demonstration. Don M.: Two members tentatively interested in Vice President: one member is Jim Tucker. Don is authorized to spend $200 to retrofit the trailer with safety equipment. Approved by Board. Dave Pitt is volunteer trailer hauler. Jack W.: 503-C: Will be meeting with Tom J. to document three years of financials. Once submitted, we ll begin eligibility for the year of Working on a 2013 program schedule, and should see a draft by next meeting. The VFW has requested that we place a 2 x 8 piece of plywood under the lathe. Jack to purchase. Jack F.: Group will meet on 10/10 to plan activities for next year. Jack W. plans to offer six new demonstrator training classes with a focus on tools and projects. Board Attendees: Rick Terney, Tom Johanson, Jack Frost, Jim Steck, Don McNutt, Fred Floyd, and Jack Wayne, Les Dawson. Absent: Mark Petersen, George Hart, Biz Jaskovsky, Jim Jaskovsky, and David Lippincott.
5 5 Christmas Party coming on December 13 Thursday, December 13 is the date for this year s Christmas Party. Traditionally we celebrate the season with a Yankee-type gift exchange, awarding of prizes to those who have helped the club in the previous year and a fine old sharing of holiday foods. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange bring an unmarked, wrapped woodturning, woodworking oriented gift (value usually less than $20,00) to exchange. It is always fun watching the machinations of members trying to set themselves up to win that one prize they see that they want to get. Also, if you wish to participate in the exchange, please remember that the orientation is to give something you as a woodturner might like to receive. VOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEER Now that I have your attention, if you have not been turning in signed volunteer tickets at each meeting that you volunteer services-set up, take down, bringing in wood for raffle, that sort of thing that helps make meetings smooth and comfortable-you are missing out on some neat possibilities. At our Christmas meeting each year we draw names out of the can holding those tickets. When your name is drawn some sort of reward is given-wood, tools, things of this nature is awarded. It takes many people doing a lot of jobs to set up and run our meetings properly. This is an attempt for the club to say. Thanks for the help. Don t miss out! Info Needed One of the goals of the newsletter is to pass on information that might be relevant for turners, be they beginners or old hands. None of us is good enough that we can t continue to learn, to enhance what we turn. To that end the club offers opportunities for members to watch many of the masters who visit us on daylong seminars, occasionally a full day of turning with them, Sawdust Sessions and the like. Another thing available are opportunities like those being offered by our member Bonnie Klein at Anderson Ranch or in Port Townsend. If you know of a member, or another other person presenting woodturning, even woodworking opportunities for members I would appreciated being told so we can alert membership in a timely manner. Looking forward to hearing from you.
