1 ` NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2016 EDITOR Gary Haubold WE WILL BE HAVING A MEETING at 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 3, 2016 Our meeting place will be at our regular meeting place at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Black Diamond Road, just south of the bridge which crosses Highway 101. Check the complete directions below at the end of this newsletter. *********************************************MEETING AGENDA******************************************************* *WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS * *CLUB BUSINESS * *SHOW AND TELL * * ROUND TABLE -- SKETCH UP * ************************************************************************************************************************* WELCOME AND INTERODUCTIONS WOW! We had a great meeting with fifteen members and guests in attendance. There was the regular meeting and what seemed like a meeting after the meeting. Look at these folks. Everybody had on their coats and they were not heading for the door. I ran into a handful of members during the week following our February meeting and they all agreed it was a meeting that should not have been missed. Let s keep it going! WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Hershel Lester is looking forward to spring and is starting on a fir workbench. Jon Gabel recommends Rachael Boyd s classes. Fred Mandery is making valets key fobs. Jon Fager finished staining the floors of a Habitat for Humanity house. Jonathan White is still working on his chicken coop doors and has started on the

2 hen s nesting boxes. Bruce Thompson got a wood stove for his shop. Angeles Millwork is aware of the problems with our brochure stand placement. (As a side note I was in Angeles Millwork. When my purchase was completed I inquired about the brochure stand, they pointed it out to me on a counter opposite from the registers). Gary Haubold has been designing some fly tying equipment Anything you can do in plastic or metal I can do better (words from a song in OKLAHOMA) in wood, or I think I can. LOL Mike Kurhajetz got some sandpaper from Swsains and brought in some of it in packets for those who wanted it. Ed McKay finally got into his shop. Jake Tiemersma built a bedroom TV shelf and is working on a bowl. Tom Howell brought bought plywood at Hartnagels and got a real bargain on the cuts. He was working on a project that required some dovetails and tried them by hand and quickly went to a router. (This is a conclusion that came from a recent ROUND TABLE. Use the method which is best for you). He installed some bay windows and is doing lots of work on his house. Jeff Considine is working on some cabinets. Dick Boyd says the weather is still too cold. He s working on some boxes. Jon Cash is still working on his boat. John Keldgord hasn t been doing much. CLUB BUSINESS Dues are due. Shop tour It sounds like Ed McKay is going to host. Jon Cash needs suggestions for ROUND TABLE topics. Does any body have any ideas? SHOW AND TELL Jonathan White Burned out his router motor working on his workbench. L & L Tools said he could fix it but it would cost more than a new one. The new router has some really nice features. Jonathan also showed us two nice bench dogs. KUDOS for L& L Tools. Ed McKay recentl had a grand-nephew added to his family. He has turned 11 pounds. Ed made him a tool box out of curly maple with box joints. He used red analine dye mixed with water base Varathane. Ed plans to make tools. Does that boy stand a chance of not being a woodworker? (A personal anecdote: When I was a little shaver my grandma was baby sitting my baby sister and me. Grandma noticed things had gotten awfully quiet and went to check. Through the hinge side crack spotted me with my wooden hammer poised to thump a baby sister on the head). Bruce Thompson brought in some napkin holders and the jig for making the proper cuts

3 Jon Fager made a sacrificial fence for his Biesmayer rip fence. Jeff Considine built a shooting board for 45 degree miters. Hershel Lester showed us a tool set he uses in his luthier work. He acquired the tools from Stewart McDonald Luther Supply. He had a Dremel style router used for purfling work. (It was when I saw violin maker Ric Thanem present a program to our club a few years back that piqued my fascination with precise woodworking). Mike Kurhajetz showed us a can of Evapo Rust, a biodegradable rust remover. The process of rust removal can be stopped at any point say when you want a certain degree of patina on a metal surface. ROUND TABLE Circles and Holes Using the Router. Jon showed us few minutes of a router tutorial and then spoke to us about what could be done. Jonathan White s presentation dovetailed right into Jon s presentation. Remember, each time you are present at a meeting, if your dues are paid, your name goes in the bowl for the membership attendance drawing which is held every third meeting. At our September meeting there were 28 entries. We (the board of directors) really are very concerned about our club and how to improve it. When I first joined the club it wasn t unusual to have an attendance of twenty-five and some pretty great meetings. We are working toward that goal. Annual dues are $ As a club we cannot survive if dues are not paid. That is a bargain compared to other organizations to which I belong. If you enjoy reading this newsletter, Great! I sure enjoy doing it. Your dues pay for the postage and our speakers and other club expenses. The guest speakers we ve had were outstanding. I cannot really figure ink and paper costs because my printer is used for everything at home. That s a small contribution for the satisfaction I get from doing the newsletter. So you can see how important the dues are. CLUB LIBRARY The club has a nice library which is ordinarily open to members during regular meeting hours, which has an extensive collection of woodworking books, magazines, carving patterns and videos. We are always on the lookout for additional resources. We have some pretty neat things there.

4 MEETING AND CONTACT INFORMATION Unless otherwise notified, regular club meetings are held in the downstairs fellowship hall at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Black Diamond Road which is just south of West Highway 101, about halfway between Albertson s Market and the Fairmount Restaurant. Turn north up the hill at the Pine Street intersection which is just down the hill from the bridge which crosses over Highway 101. Proceed up the Pine Street exit to the four way stop sign and turn left. Cross the bridge. You can now see your destination ahead on the left. The club meeting is held the first Thursday of the month 7:00 pm. The Board of Directors meets at the church office at 2:00 pm the Tuesday following our monthly meeting.
