1 2016 Virginia Gourd Festival Class Descriptions SUNDAY AFTERNOON, OCTOBER 30 TH CLASSES Title: Metallic Chip Carved Oil Lamp Instructor: Brenda Riggs Time: 12:30 PM 4:00 PM. Level: Beginning Intermediate Class Identifier: LS (Learn The Skill) *Depending on student s skill level, student may or may not finish the project in class. A tutorial will distributed allowing students to finish the project at home. Fee: $41.00 Number of students: Maximum 10, minimum 1 outofmygourd@hotmail.com Class Description: Students will create a functional yet beautiful gourd oil lamp which has a double-sided design. One side will have a radiating chip carved pattern and the other side will showcase a wood burned and dyed floral design. Instructor will provide: Gourd, oil lamp insert with funnel, ink dyes, paints, brushes, and a tutorial. Student will provide: A wood burner, a variable temperature wood burner is recommended but a hobby style one will work. Wood burner tips/nibs: skew pen for lines and a small and medium ball tip burn pen. A Dremel or comparable carving tool with carbide structured ball burr and #109 and #107 ball bits. Adjustable compass. Measuring tape. Scissors. Exacto knife. Heat tool, not a hair dryer. Apron/protective clothing. U Palm Gouges: #8 X 3/8 inch; #8 X ¼ inch; #11 X ¼ inch. Ramelson and Flexcut are the best gouge brands. Craft stores do not carry them. Ramelson gouges can be purchased from Turtle Feathers at Flexcut gouges can be purchased from Flexcut Amazon sells both brands Mountain Wood Carvers Title: Chicken Construction 101 Instructor: Reagan Bitler. 2 Class Description: The results of this class just won t be chicken scratch you will create a one of a kind whimsical chicken! Chickens will be constructed using a wooden base, dowel rods, gourd scraps, Apoxie Sculpt and Quikwood. Students should have previous experience with cutting small gourd pieces with a gourd saw, use of a drill and use of a rotary/carving tool. Due to the drying time of Apoxie Sculpt and Quickwood, students will finish the chicken outside of the designated class time. Instructor will provide: Gourd scraps. Sand paper. Wooden Base. Dowel rods. Apoxie Sculpt. Quikwood. Student will provide: A gourd of their choice to serve as the shape of the chicken body. Gourd saw and extra blades for cutting small gourd scraps. Drill and ¼ inch and 3/8 inch drill bits. A rotary tool such as a Dremel or a comparable carving tool with a variety of bit sizes. Title: Chinese Wealth Coin Vase Instructor: Troy Tatum Level: Intermediate Fee: $ troytatum@bellsouth.net Class Description: Learn how to create the look of a Chinese Wealth Coin on a gourd vase. Participants will transfer a furnished wealth coin pattern to the gourd, wood burn the outline, cut out the center and color the background of the wealth coin design. This class will focus on creating a new technique with a wood burner. We will wood burn on top of metallic paint to create the unique effect of the Chinese wealth coin background. An overview of pen tips and their uses will be conducted. Students should finish the project in the allotted class time. Full instructions will be provided and all techniques will be demonstrated in class in case a student needs to finish the project outside of class. Instructor will provide: A 7 to 9 inch cut, craft-ready gourd vase. Chinese Wealth Coin pattern. Transfer paper or Stick N Burn. Compasses. Pencils and pens. Ink dye. Applicators. Black acrylic paint for inside of gourd. Gold metallic paint for the background of the coin. A gourd protective finish. Detailed instructions in tutorial format. Student will provide: A variable temperature wood burner with a skew tip, a writing tip or small ball tip, and any other tips you have (we will discuss their uses). A tool to clean your wood burner tips on such as a piece of the finest grit steel wool or a leather strop. Breathing mask or respirator. A desire to learn something new and different! Students will learn how to wood burn, color and make the gourd actually light up. Students will complete only one ornament in class but will receive more patterns to create additional ornaments outside of class. Instructor will provide: Egg gourds. Inks. Patterns. Markers. Wood burner (if necessary for student to borrow.) All setup and clean-up supples. Student will provide: A wood burner (variable temperature or a hobby style) with a skew tip pen and a ball shader. Disposable gloves. Mask. Title: Swimming With A Sea Turtle Instructor: Susan Zanella susanzanella@hotmail.com Class Description: This adorable sea turtle will help you learn how to do shading with pyrography (wood burning). Come learn how to cross hatch to achieve shading without hard lines and to perfect you wood burning technique. Instructor will provide: Cut, cleaned and sanded gourd suitable for wood burning. All materials to transfer pattern. Tutorials. Some tools available for use during class-please, susanzanella@hotmail.com if you need to reserve a tool. Student will provide: A wood burner (variable temperature or a hobby style) with any tips/pens that you have. Only one tip is necessary and can be any tip you own, but a ball tip will work the easiest. Students will learn how to carve a pumpkin face using special carving tools supplied by the instructor. Plan on creating a unique pumpkin masterpiece. Instructor will provide: Pumpkin. Carving tools. Tutorial. Student will provide: An apron or cover up to protect clothing. Title: Leather Mask Making and Leather Carving Instructor: Virginia Dare Brewer. In this class students will cut out and mold a piece of leather to create a custom fitted mask for their own faces. Students will color and decorate their masks with inks, paint and designs of their own choosing. While waiting for the masks to dry, students will learn basic leather carving techniques by picking out an image and transferring the image to a new piece of leather. Title: Two Milk Lotions and A Luffa Soap Instructor: Valerie Rountree Date: Sunday Afternoon, October 29. Fee: $55.00 Number of students: Maximum 10, minimum 5 valerierountree@vrsoap.com Class Description: In this class, students will learn how to make two bottles of all natural milk lotion out of pasteurized cows milk and one exfoliating Luffa Soap. Upon completion of the two projects, each student will take home one 9.60 oz bottle and one 2.55 oz bottle of milk Lotion plus one 3.75 oz size bar of soap. 2 MILK LOTIONS AND LUFFA SOAP CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
