Magnet Basket Voice Coil Cone Pole Piece Dust Cap Top Plate Spider Surround Pole Piece To Magnet To Top Plate There are few options for bonding the pole piece to the magnet. In all cases, ensure the mating surfaces are clean and dry prior to bonding. Steel parts may be contaminated with plating residues, lubricant or dust by-product of the grinding process that makes the magnet smooth. Current best practices for bonding magnet to steel utilizes structural adhesives. Several different formulations for different surfaces, gap fill capabilities and fixture times are available. These adhesives are fast, strong and easily dispensed. These structural adhesives create a very thin bond line to minimize magnetic energy loss. These adhesives develop good handling strength in seconds and the assembly can be magnetized in 5 minutes. Adhesives and Primers Acrylic adhesives are used with activators. Most of the activators are solvent-based but for dichromated surfaces, a solventless primer is typically used (which also helps for large gaps).

4 1. When using ReAct structural adhesives apply Activator 56 to both sides of the magnet. 2. Apply ReAct to pole piece. PRODUCT: FIXTURE TIME: ReAct seconds ReAct 767 (acid free) 25 seconds For higher strengths: ReAct 784 or min. w/ Activator 15 * If an anaerobic structural adhesive is preferred, apply Primer 50 to one side (46 for dichromated surfaces) and HASA 716 to the other side. 3. Adhere and secure magnet to pole piece.

5 4. Apply Structural Adhesive to top plate. * Refer to step 2 5. Secure basket to magnet/pole piece. * Insert a spacer for proper alignment of parts. NOTE: In making frames more attractive (especially for the automotive after-market), manufacturers have embraced powder coat finishes on their frames, which can introduce some unwanted bonding challenges. Most of the powders used in these processes contain epoxies combined with wax compounds which create smoother and more attractive surfaces. However, this wax interferes with the bond and must be stripped off of any bonding surfaces. Washing these surfaces with solvents such as toluene, xylene or methyl ethyl ketone can significantly improve bond strength although these solvents have fallen out of use in the last few years. Isopropyl alcohol may be the best alternative. 6. Apply Quantum 156 to voice coil and spider and then gently mist Accelerator 52 to cure the bead of adhesive.

6 7. Apply Quantum 156 to basket/spider joint. * Remove spacer 8. Adhere voice coil/spider to basket. Allow adhesive to wet flange of spider. *Option - Hernon s Voice Coil Bonder 360 can be used to coat voice coil wires to increase thermal management of the voice coil. ** If high heat is not an issue, then 353 can be used to protect the wires. 9. Use Accelerator 52 to quicken the adhesion of the voice coil/spider to basket.

7 10. Apply Quantum 156 to basket to adhere speaker cone surround. 11. Place speaker cone around voice coil and secure to basket. 12. Apply Quantum 156 to voice coil/cone joint and mist with Accelerator 52. * Carefully mist Accelerator 52 on the voice coil/ cone joint ONLY and NOT on the speaker surround during this step. OR Apply Conebonder 394 to the joint between voice coil and cone. Apply heat to cure the adhesive.

8 13. Apply Quantum 156 on the edge of speaker surround and fasten speaker gaskets. (Ensure the holes are accurately aligned and that full contact is made between the gaskets and the speaker surround.) Mist the gaskets with Accelerator Apply Quantum 156 to speaker cone to adhere dust cap. 15. Fasten dust cap to cone.

9 16. Apply Accelerator 52 to quicken the adhesion of the dust cap. Your fully assembled speaker is now complete! Speaker electrical Q.C. s can be conducted within 10 minutes. All of the products used in this guide.
