1 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS A CSW Industrials Company FR and FRE Roof Expansion Joint Covers IMPORTANT The following instructions are very important. Read them carefully, and be sure you understand them completely before you begin any work. Store this product in the horizontal position in a clean, dry location. This is a finished product. Store this product in a protected area. Do not stack anything on top of this product. Review approved Balco shop drawings for types and locations prior to beginning work. RECOMMENDED TOOLS TAPE MEASURE / LEVEL / CHOPSAW / DRILL / DRILL BITS FOR CONCRETE / SCREWDRIVERS / HEX DRIVERS / SEALANT STEP ONE Select the base members. If the gaskets were not installed into the base members a the factory, install them into the base members at this time. Insert the foot of the gasket into the base member s channel, then slide the gasket into the channel. Take care that the gasket does not stretch during installation. Repeat this procedure for each base member section. STEP TWO If fire barrier is provided in conjunction with the joint cover system, install the fire barrier at this time. Install the fire barrier in accordance with the applicable fire barrier installation instructions and Balco shop drawings or details. If blocking is to be used in the installation of these covers, ensure the fire barrier is installed on the fire rated slab or wall, beneath the blocking materials. 2 STEP THREE FR & FRE roof expansion joint cover models are designed for installations on roof blocking. Install the blocking and roofing materials (provided by others) at this time, in accordance with Balco shop drawings, details, and industry best practices. STEP FOUR If water barrier is to be installed in conjunction with the joint cover system, place the water barrier in its installed position in the joint at this time. Reference Balco supplementary installation instruction EPDM Water Barrier Installation Instructions for information regarding EPDM installation, splicing, and transitions. STEP FIVE Select a base member and place it into its installed position. Ensure that the base member is level and properly aligned. Using the anchors and washers provided from the factory, attach the base member to the substrate. Pre-drilling wood for gimlet point fasteners is not required. Repeat until all base members are installed. It is necessary to leave a gap between adjoining base members. recommended for extrusions 10 (3m) in length or less. info@ Page 02 of 05 Toll Free:

3 STEP SIX Splice covers are provided for base member splice locations. To complete a base member splice, apply a continuous bead of sealant to the surface of each mating end of base member section. Select a base member splice cover and place it over the gap between mating base member sections, pressing it firmly into the bed of sealant. While ensuring the splice cover remains centered over the gap, secure the splice cover to one base member using two factory provided #6 TEK screws. STEP SEVEN For installation of FRE systems, proceed to Step Nine. For installation of FR systems, select a section of cover plate and the centering bars, centering bar bolts, and neoprene washers required for the cover plate. Using the notches provided in the center of each section of installed base member, insert the centering bars spheres into the base members tracks on each side of the joint. When correctly installed, centering bars will span the joint diagonally, and all centering bars will be parallel to one another. Centering bar installation must be uniform. Repeat until all the centering bars have been installed in the section of the joint cover system. STEP EIGHT Place the cover plate next to the installed base members so it is aligned with its installed position. Slide the centering bars along the base members so that the anchor hole in each centering bar lines up with the corresponding anchor hole in the cover. Place the cover into its installed position spanning the joint. Insert one centering bar bolt into each anchor hole in the cover plate. Attach the cover plate to the centering bars by tightening the centering bar bolts by hand. Do not over tighten the centering bar bolts. Repeat Steps Seven and Eight until all centering bars and covers are installed. Once all centering bars and covers are installed, proceed to Step Thirteen to complete installation of the expansion joint cover system. info@ Page 03 of 05 Toll Free:

4 STEP NINE For installation of FRE systems on concrete or masonry, select a section of cover plate. For wood constructions using gimlet point fasteners, proceed to Step Ten. Pre-drilling wood for gimlet point fasteners is not required. Place the cover plate in its installed position. FR and FRE Roof Expansion Joint Covers Ensure that the cover plate is level and properly aligned. Using the cover plate as a template, mark the anchor locations on the substrate. Remove the cover plate from its installed position and drill the anchor holes at the marked locations. Drill the anchor holes 1/4 (6mm) deeper than the length of the supplied anchors. Clear all dust and debris from the anchor holes and mating surface. STEP TEN For installation of FRE systems with centering bars, proceed to Step Eleven. Select a cover plate and place it into its installed position. Ensure that the cover plate is level and properly aligned. Using the anchors and washers provided from the factory, attach the cover plate to the substrate. Repeat Steps Nine and Ten for each section of cover plate. Once all cover plates are installed, proceed to Step Thirteen to complete installation of the expansion joint system. It is necessary to leave a gap between adjoining cover plates. recommended for plates 10 (3m) in length or less. STEP ELEVEN For installation of FRE systems with centering bars, select a section of cover plate and the centering bars, centering bar bolts, and neoprene washers required for the cover plate. Using the notches provided in the center of each section of installed base member, insert the centering bars spheres into the base member s tracks. Use the cover plate s pre-drilled bolt holes as a reference for positioning each centering bar. When correctly installed, centering bars will span the joint diagonally, and all centering bars will be parallel to one another. Centering bar installation must be uniform. Once all centering bars have been attached to the base member, place the cover plate into its installed position. Thread one centering bar bolt and neoprene washer through the cover and into each centering bar. Do not fully tighten the centering bar bolts. info@ Page 04 of 05 Toll Free:

5 STEP TWELVE Once all centering bars have been loosely secured to the cover plate, secure the cover plate to the substrate using the factory supplied anchors. Ensure that the cover plate is level and properly aligned. After the wall anchors have been installed, go back and tighten each centering bar bolt by hand. Do not over tighten the centering bar bolts. It is necessary to leave a gap between adjoining cover plates. recommended for plates 10 (3m) in length or less. STEP THIRTEEN Splice covers are provided for cover plate splice locations. To complete a cover plate splice, apply a continuous bead of sealant to the surface of each mating end of cover plate section. Select a cover plate splice cover and place it over the gap between mating cover plate sections, pressing it firmly into the bed of sealant. While ensuring the splice cover remains centered over the gap, secure the splice cover to one cover plate using two factory provided #6 TEK screws. Transitions are installed similar to splice covers, with transitions installed on a bed of sealant, then fastened in place with TEK screws.
