Custom Quilling Custom Quilling DT This month s assignment for the DT was to design projects using the 3D Keepers. These are versatile snap together containers that easily fit quilling and Punchart, terrific for cards that will be mailed and scrapbooking. This issue is Paula s final one as a active DT, she will always be welcomed back, we hope to be seeing more of her incredible work soon. The original patterns she has and will design will still be available thru the store, so we all can get our Paula fix! Her input and creative work on the DT will be sorely missed, making her place very difficult to fill. We wish her only the best and continued success in both her personal and business careers. con t on pg2 Our thoughts are with all who have suffered from the effects of Katrina. During the month of September Custom Quilling will be donating a portion of all sales from both the store and quilling line to the American Red Cross for the hurricane relief fund. Quill News September 2005 Entering Quilling Competitions... by Doreen Coreman Can Be A Rewarding Experience Entering Paper Quilling into Competitions and Art Shows can be such a wonderful experience. I started quilling in October of 2001, and entered my first major project just 9 months after in July 2002 at The Calgary Stampede Western Arts and Crafts Show. It was a pair of quilled swans from a pattern in one of Malinda Johnston s books. I happily took a blue 2nd place ribbon, and was just thrilled, and couldn t wait to enter another piece the next year. In 2003, I made another framed piece, again from Malinda Johnston s book. It was the Carolina Wren, and again, I took second place. I soon realized after these 2 second place ribbons, that as long as I kept using nonoriginal patterned designs, I probably wouldn t get more than 2nd place wins. In 2004, I decided to do some designs that were all my own original pieces. What a difference that made!!! I entered 3 pieces; an 8 x 10 framed quilled peacock, a birthday card, and a friendship thank you card. My peacock took 3 awards (1st in class, 1st in section, and section winner overall medal), my birthday card got a 2nd place, and my thank you card got 2 awards (1st in class, 4th in section). I was so proud of my accomplishment in such a short time, and very pleased at how much I learned a long the way. So earlier this year, I was sent an invitation to compete in the Masters Division (the highest level of Competition), because I had won 2 section awards last year. con t on pg5 New Items In the up coming weeks Custom Quilling will be bringing a whole new line of merchandise in the store. These will incorporate stamping and punching, add quilling... you will have a unique artwork ready for gift giving or to sell. 2 Custom Quilling News September 2005 Page 2 Design Team con t from pg1 Projects the talented Design Team has come up with for this month featuring the 3D Treasure Keepers This large heart is made with a cream cardstock then overlaid with a printed vellum. The flowers are all quilled - I even fit a folded rose into the keeper! This square card (5 ½ x 5 ½ ) is made with pale blue paper available in Pearlized Multi Pack 2. The aperture is cut with scissors or craft knife after tracing the template that comes in the 3D Keeper package. The quilled flower is made with four shades of 1/8 Paplin pearl strips. Alternate-sidelooped leaves and stems are made with pearl powder blue strips. Crimped strips cover raw edge of aperture and add interest to the design. I cut a pale pink heart from cardstock for the background. I then placed a white Mulberry heart over the pink, drafted a design of vines and hearts with some small bud flowers attached all made with Speck-tacular quilling paper This tri-fold Halloween shaker card measures approximately 3 ½ x 8 ½ and fits a business size envelope. Fold into thirds, a sheet of the shimmery white paper that comes in Pearlized Multi Pack Two. Purchase or print out a sheet of Halloween background paper, cut to size of card front, leaving a narrow margin all around and glue in place on center third of card. Cut three evenly spaced 2 circle apertures using the template that comes in the 3D Keeper package. Quill a witch s hat and jack o lantern and glue to shiny yellow paper that has been cut (using the template) to fit inside the Keepers. Place quilled candy corn loosely inside the center Keeper so that it can be jiggled. Tape the Keepers to the back of the card s center section and fold over and glue the left third in place to create a professional look. These two smaller keepers that I thought could be turn into refrigerator magnets. This Halloween scrapbook layout is made using computer-printed pumpkin background paper and SPECK-tacular paper strips and sheets. Trim away edges of oval 3D Keeper. Place backing paper, a strip of black grosgrain ribbon, and crimped Boo! letters inside the Keeper. Quill a crescent moon, bat, and black cat. The cat is inspired by Jacqueline Lee s design in her Twirled Paper book. Spiky fur on his arched back and a fluffy tail has been added to give him a scary look 8.5 x 11 sheet of natural colored cardstock, folded and trimmed. Computer printed graphics trimmed and glued to surface. Wheat quilled with 1/16" papers, and inserted into 3-D keeper, leaving wheat unmounted so it shifts and moves. Next, use enclosed template to cut out opening in card front. Insert 3-D keeper and glue off-white vellum and front design behind 3-D keeper to give dimension and to create a nice finished look inside card. A glue stick was used to glue papers and mount 3-D keeper and seems to hold just fine. To see more of their work and read their Bios make sure to check out The Design Team Page:

Custom Quilling News September 2005 Page 3 New Items Pearl Spray Adds a touch of elegance to your projects Finally... flat back gold beads for easy gluing! 45 Degree Fringer Adjust Depth & width of cut 1/4-3/4 folded paper Assortment of shaped acrylic coaster - paperweights 3D Treasure Keepers Tools The Newest Punches Embossing Tool Glue Bottle 2 metal tips Quilling Circle Template Board To save paper punch upside down, so Reverse Tweezers Centering Ruler Rubber Handle Tools cuts may be aligned as close as possible Reviews by Denise The long anticipated 45 degree fringer was well worth the wait. After all my years of Quilling I tend not to become too excited about new tools in the marketplace, I must admit I was ripping open this package like a child on Christmas morning! This unlike previous versions is capable of fringing up to a 3/4 strip of folded quilling paper giving a fringed strip of 3/8 paper. Making it Strips for fringing maybe cut from any medium weight cardstock a very versatile tool to add to you assortment. With this fringer not only are beautiful fringed leaves possible, in addition making the fringed flowers highlighted by DT Ann in the July newsletter is now a breeze! The adjustments of the machine permit the width and depth of the cuts to be altered with just a few minor modifications using the provided Allen wrench. Well done Paplin Products, it is so satisfying to have a company really listen to the needs of the Quilling community, then produce a product to meet those needs.

Custom Quilling News September 2005 Page 4 Meet... Sheryl Scott of Huber Heights, OH I have always loved to do arts and crafts since I was a little girl. As the years progressed, I got more involved with other things and the arts went on the back burner. In 2001, I decided it was time to get the creative side out of the moth balls! I discovered rubber stamping and started to design and make greeting cards. I enjoy finding new ways to create cards. I saw a card that had a quilled flower on it while I was looking through my craft books. I like it and wanted to learn to do it. I hunted and hunted in my community and could find no one that knew how to quill. One day I went to a scrapbook store to purchase some cardstock. I saw that they offered classes for many things including quilling. I signed up immediately. It turned out that the instructor had never taught a class and I was the only student. I paid a high price for the class and came home with a dismal project. I vowed that I would never pay that kind of money again for such an awful experience. I then went on the quest for quilling information at the local library. I found a few books including Malinda Johnson's book. Then it was off to the bookstore to investigate. I ended up ordering many quilling books. I got the supplies at a local art supply store. From there, it is history!! I taught myself to quill. I am always striving to improve and find things to quill. There are many more things to learn!!! I am married with two grown children. We have lived here since My husband is retired from the Air Force. I was commissioned to do a quilled frame for Dr. Phil and his wife last year. I was also asked to do thank you cards and frames for all the producers and directors on his show. I have had one of my works published in the Lake City Craft Co book "A Journey down the Quilling Road". I recently started to teach quilling classes. Maxine Shorter of Michigan I am eighty years old and love all kinds of crafts. I use to do quilling about thirty years ago. I am happy to see it has become so popular. There are so many new things to make it so enjoyable. Quilling seems to be real relaxing. I really like the glue bottle with the tips. To put mine in a container I cut the top from a small water bottle to look like a funnel. I put this in a small baby food jar to keep it from tipping over. I use double sticky tape used to hang things on the wall, to hold the funnel in the jar. This works real well. Another thing, I store my paper in a paper towel roll, the one with wrapping paper works the same way. I just cut it open and lay the paper in it. I also use the green florist tape for stems and leaves. Just stretch a short piece the length you want the stem to be and start twisting. Using the left hand twist one way and the other way with the right hand. To make the leaf, I take about an inch of the stretched tape and fold it for times, twist it then flatten it. I have now been putting Quilling on the CDs that come in the mail. Doreen Coreman of Canada Here is Doreen s entries and the ribbon she won from the recent show at Calgary Stampede. Look for Doreen s amazing patterns at Custom Quilling soon! Why not share your Quilling story?

Custom Quilling News September 2005 Page 5 Original Patterns at Custom Competitions con t from pg1 I was both excited, and scared, as I didn t really think I was ready to be in the Masters. I did another 3 entries that were all original pieces; A 3D life size Blue Morpho butterfly under a glass dome, in which I cut every strip to 1/16 wide, and painted the underside including all of its markings (1st place ribbon, and a medal), another Thank You card (3rd place ribbon), and a Christmas card. I was so nervous, but I was determined to do well, so was very proud to have won again. There can be many benefits to entering, and I have learned so much through my experiences. The show I do every year has the potential for almost a million people to see my work! Estimates are between 500& 700 thousand, who go through the exhibits, out of about 1.3 million who attend the Stampede every year. That in itself is very rewarding to know that so many can be potentially exposed to see this art form! Winning the awards is an added bonus, as I can have that on the backs of my cards, and on any business cards, and printed materials. People, who are looking to buy cards, and gifts, seem to be quite impressed when they read about the awards I ve won. They then realize, it isn t just a craft, but an actual Art Form, which is part of the reason, I keep competing. Also, it has really helped to stretch my imagination, and grow in an area of designing my own pieces. There may even be various shows that may have prize money involved as well, although I have not been involved in any of these, so can t say much about them. In many competitions, the judges have a set of criteria to follow. So, whether they ve heard of quilling or not, they can still judge it according to what their criteria is. Please remember, this is based on my experiences in competing, and although it may be different in other places, here are some helpful tips for entering shows and competitions: Before you register for any competition, contests, or art shows, make sure you are aware of all the rules and guidelines. This is to protect you. Some may want to keep your work after the show, so you may have to decide if you want to make something, that won t be returned. This may also influence the complexity, and size of your entry. So, always check before hand, if they will be keeping entries, or returning them. When you re registering, if you re asked to give a description of your project, go into detail. Tell them how long it took you to make, the sorts of papers you used and how much ( I give them an estimated total of how many feet of paper is in the project), include various techniques, and especially tell them if it is your design or not. The more you can explain about it, the better. Plan your project, and visualize how you want the finished piece to look. If you can, design your own project to keep it original. Designing a project can take longer than the quilling, but it is well worth it. Judges, will always look for originality first over patterns. Since I first started entering my work I have really seen a lot more entries every year, which is wonderful to see. I recognize work that is from patterns, and note that they are usually given 2 nd or 3 rd place awards. However, if you are new to quilling, and not comfortable with making your own original piece, don t fret, use a pattern, as it is still a good experience, and if you make a good quality piece, you may still be awarded first place, as the judges may just love how you made the piece. Be as neat as possible, no glue marks showing, and not too much of a crimp in the center of your coils, as they seem to like the small centers, that the needle tool, or hand rolling gives. Also, the type of frames, display cases, and stands may have an effect on judging. If you have a frame that has slight flaws, they may notice this, or notice if your mat is slightly off center. Ask when taking your piece in, if you can have your contact info displayed with your piece. Some will let you, and some won t, but it never hurts to ask. I know from experience, as they never use to let us in the past, but this year they did, and I didn t know, so I didn t have any contact info displayed. Whether you win or not, be very proud that you were able to have your quilling on display, as that is one of the best the best parts of the whole experience. I have had people come up to me at Christmas Craft sales, and tell me they saw my pieces displayed. Wow! What a great feeling! I hope if anyone has an opportunity to enter a show/competition, they at least do so once. I have learned so much, and gained so much experience by doing show pieces, that is has really helped improve my quilling and show many our beautiful art form Doreen Coreman

Custom Quilling News September 2005 Page 6 Free Pattern ~ Candy Corn written by DT Ann Martin Step 1. Use 1/16 paper strips (white, orange, and yellow) so two layers of candy corn can jiggle inside the 3D Keeper. Step 2. Pinch a white 5 open coil into a triangle to create bottom section, pinch an orange 8 open coil into center section shape, and pinch a yellow 10 open coil into a half circle for the top section. Step 3. Glue the three pieces together and outline it by wrapping a yellow strip twice around the piece of candy corn.
