2 WELCOME! TO #DREAMCITY18 DEAR DREAMER In the following you will be introduced to the most unique community at Roskilde Festival. It s a place where you have the opportunity to live out your most desired dreams, be creative and be part of a loving festival family. At the end of this guide you ll know everything from this years registration procedure, the new map, how and why to build in Dream City and of course all important dates to fill in your calender. In other words you will become a much better citizen of Dream City. Welcome to a new and more responsible festival experience. 1

4 ABOUT DREAM CITY WHAT IS DREAM CITY? Dream City is an audience-driven community established in 2012 at Roskilde Festival. It s located on campsite H, one of the festival s most central camping areas. The foundation of the community is based on sustainable and socially responsible dreams and core values like citizenship, innovation, co-creation and diversity. TO STAY IN DREAM CITY YOU NEED TO AGREE TO THESE 3 DOGMAS Aquire a ticket for Roskilde Festival or become a volunteer Dream up a contribution that you want to share with everyone at the festival Leave no trace. What you bring you must take with you again when you leave Roskilde Festival 3

5 The philosophy behind Dream City rests upon the idea of giving ownership back to the audience, by giving you the opportunity to create and build your own unique camping area together with other like-minded festival-guests before the festival starts. The city is driven by creative dreamers, who want to elevate the festival experience by contributing with their own unique ideas and dreams. It can be anything from pillow fights to funky camp monuments, as long as it s sustainable, safe and contributes to not only your own experience but also other festival-guests. 4

6 FACILITIES IN DREAM CITY Festival toilets City Hall Community Kitchen Recycling station The City Hall This is the center of Dream City, the place to go when you need help, guidance or just a great meeting point. This is also the place to go if you need to borrow tools but this is only possible before the festival begins. The City Hall is open every weekend from (22 Aprill-18 June) and daily during the festival from Community Kitchen Bring your own groceries to Dream City and prepare it in the Community Kitchen, where you can find all the utilities you need to cook a nice meal. All you need to do is to pass by the City Hall and leave a deposit to receive a key to one of the kitchen cabins. Recycling station The station is located next to the City Hall and consists of different containers, which allows you to discard domestic waste, metal, wood and chemicals. The station is a place where you can either leave materials you won t use or you can find recycled materials for your Dream City construction. Reusable materials left at the station will be saved for next year, where all Dreamers have the possibility to get free reusable materials for their project. 5

7 10 RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN PARTICIPATING IN DREAM CITY 1. Make sure the size of your project matches your camp s work capacity. By doing so you will be able to finish your project in time. 2. Agree on how much time and energy you are willing to dedicate to your Dream City project. 3. Have a clear and complete vision before you commence your project on the fields of Dream City. Make sure you know all important events and deadlines when you set up your project plan. 4. Ask the volunteers in Dream City about anything - that s why they are here! Or send an to dreamcity@roskilde-festival.dk. 5. Always have a backup plan in case unforeseen difficulties makes plan A unachievable. 6. Make schedules and arrange who is in charge of what and when. For example agree on who your security woman/man is etc. 7. Have clear communication with the people in your project so you all know how far you are and what needs to be done. 8. Your level of effort and ambition for the project has to be similar for you to enjoy your time in Dream City. 9. Be creative and adventurous with the contribution you bring to Dream City - just remember the contribution is for everyone visiting our neighbourhood and not just the inhabitants of Dream City. 10. 8 BUILDING IN DREAM CITY Free materials are available for everyone. The materials are what s left from last year s Dream City, where all camps made a huge effort on Clean Up Day to sort out reusable materials. 1OO-DAY FESTIVAL Dream City is a 100-day festival where you can enter the campsite from the 27 April and commence your camp construction. In Dream City you have the unique opportunity to build extraordinary buildings that support your creative camp concept and provides something to the overall community in Dream City and Roskilde Festival. SAFETY APPROVAL 24 JUNE Roskilde Festival and Dream City care much about your safety. The campsite will therefore be closed from the 24 June until the festival begins due to an overall safety approval of the campsite. Roskilde Municipality and fire department are responsible for the final approval of all building projects. If your construction is not approved we will contact you before the 30 June. 9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS How much space can I get for my project? When you apply for a place in Dream City we will judge your application and accordingly assign you a spot in Dream City. We take into consideration how many people you are, what you are building and what events you are hosting. Where do I get my materials and tools? Everyone participating in Dream City are responsible of finding and buying their own materials and tools for their project. There are many shops nearby where you can purchase materials and tools. The only resource in Dream City is all the free resued materials from previous years and if available you can borrow various tools at the City Hall. Are there restrictions on what you can build? We want you to explore your creativity and dream up the best city of all, therefore we don t have many restrictions on constructions as long as it s safe, realistic and have incorporated the values of Dream City. There are restrictions on constructions that will be used for concerts, due to the fact that this is not allowed in Dream City. Any musical performance held in Dream City is organized by Roskilde Festival. Does Dream City help with building the constructions? As a rule you are not to expect that the Dream City team will help build your construction. They will however guide you, but you have to do the manual work yourself. Every year Roskilde Festival offers a digging machine to Dream City for a couple of days, so you don t have to dig the deep holes for your construction manually. 8

10 MATERIALS & FOOD Everyone need to buy and bring their own materials, tools and food to ensure a productive construction period in Dream City. A limited amount of materials are available from the reused materials from last year. The materials will be put up for grabs when the construction period begins and it is first come first served. As a dreamer you can borrow several tools at the City Hall, but it is best to bring your own tools so you don t need to wait in line and delay your process. To borrow tools you need to leave a deposit of 500,- kr cash you will get this back when you hand in the borrowed tool. It is not possible to buy food in Dream City during the construction weekends therefore you need to bring food with you or go to Roskilde city to get it. 11 5 GUIDELINES WHEN BUILDING IN DREAM CITY 1. You can borrow tools or ask for support at City Hall from 10:00-20:00 o clock every weekend. 2. It is not allowed to camp, party or play loud music before the festival begins. 3. When you are building in Dream City you need to keep your campsite clean and cleared. 4. Driving is permitted in the case of loading and unloading of goods. You can park your car at the parking lot, a designated spot near the small lake. In case you have ordered materials to the campsite, please make sure that the vehicle drives on dry soil. 5. Respect and value you Dream City neighbours. They will become a part of your festival experience. BIG TENTS ARE CONSIDERED AS CONSTRUCTIONS If you plan to have a big tent that is more than 40 square meters you need to apply for a specific permission. Send in a floorplan of the tent and a datasheet with information about emergency exits and how the tent is attached and windproof. Send the application to bygdc@roskilde-festival.dk before 6 May. HOLES FOR YOUR CONSTRUCTION When you build a construction you often need deep holes to stabilize and secure the skeleton of the construction. A special machine will pass by Dream City in the spring and dig the holes for your construction. It is therefore smart to be prepared and have an idea of how many holes you need. 10

13 HOW TO START YOUR PROJECT The Dream Up Wheel is meant to challenge you to dream up unique ideas and concepts by encouraging you to consider topics like sustainability, originality, design etc. Let the wheel inspire you to think sustainable and consider all possible opportunities when you create and design your Dream City project by answering the questions. By doing so we will all contribute, challenge ourselves, become more creative and dream up the best city of all! 14 13 THE CONTACT PERSON When signing up for Dream City you need to decide who in your camp is gonna have the important function as contact person and act as the link between the camp and the Dream City team/rf volunteers. It is very important that the person you choose as contact person constantly is up to date on everything that is happening in Dream City before and during the festival. The duty mostly consists of receiving and applying s and communicate important information to fellow camp members. GETTING A SPOT IN DREAM CITY As a new thing this year Dream City consists of camping and project areas. Every camp will be assigned a camping area and if a camp is building a construction or has a big event they will be granted a project area as well, that will be located next to their camping area. Due to safety reasons it is not allowed to sleep or camp in your project area. The placement of camps will be announced via between the April Please note that if you are building in Dream City you need to confirm your registration by showing up to a mandatory workshop on the 27 April 2017 in Dream City.

15 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What rules apply to sponsorship and advertising? It is allowed to receive sponsorships, but in no way is it allowed to advertise for these through banners, stickers, flyers, merchandise etc. In doing so you mess with the policies in Dream City and at Roskilde Festival. When can I set up my tent? You are allowed to set up your tent on the June. If you set up your tent before this day, it will be removed. Furthermore you are not allowed to use tarpaulins to reserve an area. If you don t set your tent up this weekend your camping area will be free for everyone when the festival opens on the 30 June. When and how do I enter the campsite on the 30 June? When you are a part of Dream City you either buy a festival ticket or become a volunteer. You enter the festival according to normal procedure - together with everyone else. What is Clean Up Day? On Clean Up Day all Dreamers come together to clean up campsite H before going home. It is your responsibility to preserve the environment in Dream City and clean up garbage, cigaret buds, camp materials and broken glass from your camping site and the assigned walking area. It is recommended that every camp communicates with their neighbours on how to clean up the area together. Dreamers will be assisted by Dream City volunteers on how to recycle their camp materials and big containers will be available for your trash. Before leaving the area every camp has to pass by the City Hall to get their campsite approved. Clean Up Day is mandatory for everyone in Dream City and during the day a cheap meal will be served at City Hall. You need to buy food tickets before the festival begins. 14

16 INSPIRATION ECONOMIC EQUALITY2018 Roskilde Festival 2018 will pay attention to cultural equality. We are looking at how cultural equality is interpreted and challenged both in Denmark and the rest of the world. And how cultural equality is linked to how we can express ourselves freely and take part in society and communities of all sorts. Experiences with discrimination, harassment and discrimination based on sexuality, gender, religion, ethnicity and cultural background is everyday life for many people in the world. Even in Denmark we find that cultural equality is challenged because of lack of respect and tolerance. We see it on the streets, in offices and in the media with a discriminatory rhetoric or an underlying sexist tone, causing topics such as nationality, gender discrimination and everyday sexism to pop up daily. At Roskilde Festival 2018 we will examine the influence of the culture we are born into or affected by. We will pay special attention to themes like ethnicity, religion, gender and sexuality in relation to the conditions and opportunities we have in life. Among other things, we will work with everyday racism, religious marginalisation, gender equality and sexual identity. 15

To confirm your place in Dream City you need to show up on this day and attend a workshop. 6 May Deadline for sending a floorplan of your construction and a datasheet with information about emergency exits. We celebrate a complete and finished Dream City by dancing in to the night with our new neighbours. 24 June Dream City campsite closes for safety proof. You need to set up your tent before 20:00 o clock 30 June Roskilde Festival has officially begun! All Dreamers enter the campsite together with everyone else when the gates open. 8 July Clean Up Day is mandatory for everyone in Dream City. Together we will clean up the entire campsite H. 16

18 CONTACT In Dream City we have different teams that help facilitate your unique camping experience at Roskilde Festival. Here is a short description of the teams. 19 Support Team We are responsible for evaluating all new constructions and approving their safety. We are also in charge of the mandatory Safety Seminar, where we teach you everything you need to know to build a safe construction. If you have any questions concerning safety feel free to write an to bygdc@roskilde-festival.dk. Facilitation Team We are responsible for guiding and assisting everyone in Dream City. When you pass by The City Hall we will help you in the best way possible. You can meet us multiple places in Dream City wearing a yellow west with the Dream City logo on. Our primary location is at City Hall from 10:00-20:00 every weekend from the 22 April-17 June and everyday during the festival from 10:00-18:00. Communication Team We are responsible for all external communication regarding Dream City. This involves social media, press releases, photography, video and much more. You can meet us at the different events or on the campsite during the weekend. Registration Team We are responsible for all camp registrations to Dream City and to assess if the different camp concepts are in compliance with the Dream City identity and values. We are also in charge of approving all camp fields on the big Clean Up Day. You can meet us every Saturday in Dream City from the 22 April - 2 July. Site Team We are responsible for maintaining and building constructions in Dream City, such as the City Hall, the storage and recycling station and other facilities. You can find us on the campsite in the weekends or come ask for us at the City Hall. Content Team We are responsible for organizing workshops and events, where we come up with new exciting content and ideas that can contribute in developing a great Dream City project. You can find us at the at the Dream City events and workshops, and sometimes we are also on the campsite during the weekend. Production Team We are responsible for organizing and coordinating the festival facilities and materials in Dream City, such as containers, plumbing, electricity, IT etc. We are also responsible for the map of Dream City and to mark the different sleeping and project areas on the campsite. You might meet us on the fields during the weekends. 18
