Following the singing of the National Anthem, the Toast to Canada was proposed by Cynthia. Bev gave the Reflection and then thanked Craig Sandberg for being the SAA as well as Dave McColl for assisting Craig. Craig informed us that our guest was Ted Osesky s daughter Erin. 1 P a g e

2 Stephen Margarit introduced our guest speaker, Gavin Barrett. Gavin and his wife, Tracey, are co-owners of Afloat Floatation Therapy, which they opened in February of this year. Gavin is also a paramedic and Tracey works at RBC in small business and personal banking, however Gavin s topic today is his new business and what floating is all about. 2 P a g e

3 Gavin told us that Dr. John C. Lilly, a psychoanalyst and neurophysiologist originally wanted to eliminate as much external stimuli as possible and see what happens to the brain. The concept of the floatation tank became popular in the 70 s and 80 s, gradually evolved and pounds developed into its present form about eight years ago. The float tanks are seven and a half feet long and five feet wide. The twelve inches of water contain 850 pounds of Epsom salts which keeps you from fighting gravity while you lie on your back in the water. The water is kept at 93.5 degrees. This is skin-receptor neutral, which means you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. Before entering the float pod, you shower and put in ear plugs. Once in the pod the lighting gradually changes and you control the intensity of the light and the sound level of the background music. Your ears stay just below the water, and the tanks are insulated against sound. After you shut the door of the pod and turn off the light you float in total darkness. Gavin informed us that during your float (which lasts 90 minutes) the outside world is gone, and when you are not fighting gravity or constantly taking in information your body has a lot of extra resources at its disposal. Your mind is free to mull thins over without distraction, your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins and your body gets to rest, de-stress and heal. Gavin assured us that people with claustrophobia consistently report no problems with floating. You are always in control of your environment, and you quickly lose track of the walls around you. You may fall asleep but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat. Gavin further assured us that the water is fully filtered three times between each float, including a UV light filter. Gavin told us that reasons people float include relieving stress, increasing creativity and focus, and reducing chronic pain. 4 President Bev thanked Gavin and then called on Stephen to be finemaster. In turn Stephen called for Happy Dollars, for which Gordie updated us on the progress of selecting next year s Rotary House. She further informed us that concerning the City s proposal for a bike lane along Memorial Avenus there is a petition which needs 350 more signatures. Stephen then fined everyone who had not previously heard of Afloat. Bev began the announcements by noting that the Port Arthur Rotary Club will be holding their annual Oktoberfest on September 26 and it will be an all-day event this year. At 9:00a.m. there will be a 5k Fun Run and during the day at the CLE there will be several competitions including a strongman contest. At 6:00p.m. the Oktoberfest itself begins with local caterers and the Sleeping Giant Brewery. Tickets are $20.00 in advance or $25.00 at the door. Contact Stephen or Port Arthur Rotary on line for more information. Solade told us that he visited Home Depot and received two more donated prizes for our New Year s Eve Gala. Gordie noted that the Autism Society with be having a run around Boulevard Lake on October 3, Robert reminded us that the Shelter House Food Drive takes place this Saturday, September 19, 2015 and our club is responsible for manning the Drive at Metro on Arthur Street from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. We need more help, especially for the 1:00p.m. shift. 4 P a g e

5 Bev reminded us that the Peace Ceremony (where the 3 Thunder Bay Rotary Clubs celebrate World Peace Day) will be taking place at Prince Arthur s Landing from 11:30a.m. to 12:00noon this Saturday, September 19, Stephen said that at yesterday s Board Meeting Bev informed them that she had received notice from the Airlane about an increase in meal prices. They have formed a committee to look at possible alternatives. For the Lighter Side, Jerry told a tale about Age is a Wonderful Thing. Ted was the winner of the 50/50 draw, but alas he did not draw the Queen of Hearts!
