Biannual Chapter Report May 2006 to December 2006

Foreword The year ushered in a new set new set of executives. Building upon the previous year s success and Eugene Chan, Aleksandr Kylanshitsky, Sarah Tsai and Jaron Van Dijiken, the UofA SPIE Student Chapter looked to President Edward Lau, Vice President Ivan Chan, Treasurer Navid Vafaei and Secretary Dan Sirbu to lead the Chapter into its 3rd year of operations. Continuing on last year s activities, the UofA SPIE offered industry tours of The National Institute of Nanotechnology, UofA NanoFab, Grad Studies Information Presentation and a tour of Dr Robert Fedosejeves Laser Plasma lab. Selective members of the UofA SPIE Student Chapter also took upon NASA s Space Elevator : 2010 challenge with the hopes of entering the 2007 competition. This report will summarize the May to December 2006 activities of the UofA SPIE Student Chapter, and outline goals for the next semester. Edward Lau President, UofA SPIE Student Chapter

Optics and Photonics 2006 Conference Left: Members of SPIE Student Chapters all over the world converge on San Diego For the second consecutive year, two officers were chosen to represent the UofA SPIE Student Chapter at the Optics and Photonics 2006 Conference in San Diego. President Edward Lau and Ivan Chan were proud to show off and share their Chapter and their University.

Promotion SPIE Info Lunch Recruitment for the year began with SPIE Info Lunch which was considered a great success. The turnout was estimated to be over 50 students who showed interest in SPIE, its events and its projects. ENGG 100 Wide-eyed newcomers were not excluded. In the 1st year Introduction to Engineering class ENGG 100, the UofA SPIE Student Chapter gave a powerpoint presentation to 1st year Engineering Students on the activities and opportunities offered by SPIE. Engineering Open House High school students weren t excluded either! The University of Alberta offers an orientation day to perspective students entering university, and the UofA SPIE Student Chapter was proud to be among the clubs showcased by the Faculty of Engineering. Grad Studies Presentation To start off the year with a Bang! our first event on Graduate Studies and what its all about quickly followed, given by graduate student and SPIE member Kenneth Chau.

Industry Tours National Institute of Nanotechnology (Oct 2006) After a year removal from visiting The National Institute of Nanotechnology, the UofA SPIE Student Chapter was given an opportunity to visit one of the top research facilities in nanotechnology. Left: Dr Jason Pitters of the Molecular Scales Research Group gives a presentation on hybrid silicon-organic molecules at NINT. This tour, led by Dr Jason Pitters, featured a presentation on his research in molecular scale devices followed by a tour of the highly coveted facility. As a member of the Molecular Scales Research Group, led by Dr Bob Wilcow, Dr Pitters gave a presentation on the research goals of studying hybrid silicon-organic molecules using cutting edge tools such as STM s, SEM s and high vacuum systems, including the world s sharpest and first ever single-atom-wide tungsten needle tip!

Industry Tours University of Alberta NanoFab (Oct 2006) Following the tour of NINT, the UofA Student Chapter paid a visit to its neighbor, the NanoFab. Technician Michael Hume of the NanoFab gave a descriptive tour of all things nano. From the over $18,000, worth of specialized equipment, to the research and production of nanotechnology, Michael was proud to show off the tools and processes of nanofabrication such ground-breaking research as GLAD (Glancing Angle Deposition). Left: Michael Hume shows off the NanoFab and its equipment.

Lab Tours Dr Robert Fedosejevs Photonics and Plasmas (Nov 2006) For the first time, the UofA SPIE Student Chapter visited Dr Robert Fedosejev s Laser Plasmas lab. Dr Fedosejevs first gave a short explanation of his research in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy, terahertz radiation in characterization of materials, femtosecond laser micromachining, multiphoton ionization and the generation of x-rays, laser plasmas and his more recent in fusion energy. Dr Fedosejevs then gave a tour of his lab and finished off by giving his view on the future of photonics and plasmas. Right: Dr Fedosejevs gives a tour of his laser plasmas lab

Space Elevator : 2010 This year, various members of the UofA SPIE Student Chapter decided to accept NASA s Challenge of designing and constructing an optically powered space elevator vehicle to compete at the annual X-PRIZE Cup Challenge. Formed in September 2006, 12 SPIE members formed the Alberta Space Elevator Racing Team (ASERT) and began design of the space elevator vehicle immediately. The vehicle, in the form of an elevator, is to be optically powered and climb a cable as fast as possible. Experts from the field of semiconductor fabrication, optics, lasers, control systems, mechanics, control systems and motors were formed with one goal in mind: To compete and to win.

January - April Goals More, More, More! To maintain momentum entering the second half of the school year, the UofA SPIE Student Chapter will be continuing offering tours, guest lecturers and projects. Industry Tours include Micralyne,a world leader in the research and production of nanotechnology and MEMS. Lab Tour plans include Dr Abdulhakem Elezzabi s Ultrafast Photonics and Nano-Optic lab, Dr Ying Tsui s Laser Plasmas lab, Dr John Tulip s Surgical Lasers lab and Dr Ray DeCorby s Optical Communications lab. Guest Speakers include Dr Robert Fedosejev s work on a Laser Plasma Fusion and a possible research facility at the University of Alberta, as well as Distinguished Lecturer Philip Stahl from NASA. The Outreach program looks to visit a elementary school once again this year. Making a return will be our Laser Maze, Mood Rings as well as a new event, LaserTarget. SPIE members on ASERT will continue to prepare for the 2007 NASA Challenge in October 2007 and make frequent public appearances such as the Telus World of Science as well as the Science Olympics.
