3. Chapter Activities: ioptics Seminar Series In the Fall of 2016 and Spring 2017, our chapter has collaborated with the OSA chapter and the IEEE photonics chapter to organize a bi-weekly seminar series. Every two weeks, we invite one speaker to give a lecture about their research in a seminar series called ioptics (Illinois Optics). The speaker are a faculty, postdoc, independent researchers or graduate student working in optics, photonics, and biomedical imaging. ioptics was created with the goal of bringing together a community of students, staff and faculty who share interests in the broad area of optics, including nanophotonics, optical communication, optical imaging, and biophotonics. The ioptics seminars happen during lunch and are open to anyone! On an average, about people attend each seminar. Details on the speakers of the ioptics are given below: Fall September 7, 2016: Dr. Jim Jaques Topic: Multispectral Laser Sources and their Applications 2. September 14, 2016: Prof. Sharon Weiss Topic: Exploiting Light-Matter Interaction in Silicon Photonics for Biosensing 3. September : Prof. Scott Carney Topic: Synthetic Optical Holography 4. October 7, 2016: Prof. Peter Dragic Topic: Designer Optical Fibers: Its not just about the waveguide anymore. 5. October 21, 2016: Prof. Virginia Lorenz Topic: Engineering photonic quantum states for quantum applications. 6. October 28, 2016: Prof. Douglas H Werner Topic: Arbitrary Manipulation of Electromagnetic Waves: From Meta-atoms to Metadevices. 7. November 4, 2016: Dr. Renjie Zhou Topic: Pushing the performance limits in quantitative phase imaging: higher sensitivity, faster speed, and better resolution. 8. November 11, 2016: Stewart T. M. Fryslie Topic: Modulation of Coherently-Coupled, Surface-Emitting Laser Arrays. 9. November 18, 2016: Prof. Tony Low Topic: Strong light-matter interactions with 2D materials. 10. December 9, 2016: Prof. Levent Gürel Topic: Solution of Extremely Large Forward and Inverse Problems in Computational Electromagnetics: BIG DATA Aspects. 5

Spring January : Dr. Jinyang Liang Topic: Advances in optical and photoacoustic coded-aperture imaging: visualizing light-speed phenomena, listening to cellular dynamics and manipulating particles. 2. February 3, 2017: Prof. Gary Eden Topic: Recent experiments in laser physics: Biomolecular Lasers, Spin polarized atoms and Novel optical resonators. 3. 8 4. Chapter Outreach Events There were primarily two outreach events we hosted during Spring-2016 and Fall Science at the Market 2016 For the 7th year, the U of I is bringing "Science at the Market" on most Saturday mornings to the Farmers Market at Lincoln Square mall in Urbana. The U of I and other experts will be on hand with demonstrations illustrating the science they represent, and to answer questions from the public about the researchers' discipline. The SPIE student chapter volunteered to participate along with the IEEE Photonics and OSA student chapters to demonstrate the SPIE outreach kits to children in the city of Urbana market square on two occasions in Fall-2016 on July 2 nd 2016 and September 24 th

2. Beckman Institute Open House 2017 The SPIE chapter, IEEE Photonics society and OSA chapter of UIUC has jointly organized an exhibition booth at the Engineering Open House on campus this year on March 10th to March 11th, We have shown optics demos to kids, give out small gifts to attendees and recruit new members. So far, we have support of the Beckman Institute and resources (posters, kits and IYL logos) from the SPIE, IEEE Photonics society and OSA. We also recruited many volunteers to help us with this activity. Many young children and their parents who visited our booth enjoyed viewing through SPIE outreach kits such as the reflection, refraction lenses, laser pointers and others. 9

3. SPIE Student Leadership Conference One of the chapter member attended the SPIE student leadership conference in Fall It was learning experience for our chapter and obtained insights of how to increase student chapter activity. Also the conference focused on all aspects of the student chapter involvement such as electing new students, organizing events, handling situations with committee members which provided some helpful tips to avoid conflicts and support the primary objective of the student chapter. It was a very useful networking event to interact and learn from other chapter officers. 11

5. Future Plans We plan to continue our previous year activities including ioptics seminars and outreach activities and further plan to participate in the following events for the future. 1. Saturday Engineering For Everyone In past 2015, our chapter are working with the ECE department at UIUC to organize the Saturday Engineering for Everyone. The purpose of the talk is teaching kids and parents on science every weekend. The SPIE chapter will bring nice optics demos for this outreach activities. The past year we were unable to host during SEE event, in future we plan to organize which broad audience of about 120 people has attended each. Breakfast is served with the event from funding of the ECE department. We plan to engage in future SEE seminar events. 2. Engineering Open House (EOH) The SPIE student chapter, IEEE Photonics society and OSA chapter of UIUC will join organize an exhibition booth at the Engineering Open House on campus in the coming year in the month of March We plan to recruited volunteers to help us with this activity. 13
