1 15 December 2006 REPORT SPIE Student Chapter of Novosibirsk State Technical University Novosibirsk, Russia Let us tell you a few words about our activity over a period of the last six months. First of all, we d like to boast of our previous President Katia Apraksina, who presented the Chapter at Optics & Photonics in San Diego (August, 2006). When this beauty came back to Novosibirsk she shared with us her impressions (16 September). Below one can find several photos from the Katia s journey. Konstantin Karapitian, Stud. In November 18 we had a special Chapter sitting. Our current and potential new members were acquainted with Bylaws of the Chapter.

2 Student leadership workshop Now let s return to Russia. In October 06 we visited the secret lab in the Institute of Nuclear Physics (Novosibirsk). Prof. Knyazev told us about his laboratory, in particular, the operation of laser on free electrons very impressive device. Some photos and short videos one can find at our website. Enter to the secret room. Very thick door. Mr. Dirk Fabian is frightening the little students T he laser is placed along the whole wall! Energy of Electron beam may reach a value of 15 MeV! Then in October 11 our President was delegated to round-table discussion The Collaboration between Russia and USA in the area of science. The main American delegate in that meeting was David Paradise US consul in Moscow (Russia). They discussed the problems of ecology, science and technology. In November 18 we had a special Chapter sitting. Our current and potential new members were acquainted with Bylaws of the Chapter. Also we described about SPIE to new members (three and four year students). The next sitting (in a week, November 25) the senior members helped new members to fill in membership forms and then we elected new officers. Moreover we acquired a new Chapter s Adviser Prof. Yuri P. Meshalkin, who is a recognized scientist in the field of nonlinear optics and laser biophysics. In general, we can say that our Chapter has been rather refreshed.

In the previous report we noted that Stepan made the present for our faculty on its 40 years anniversary. It looked like a rotating 3D world. Recently he has created one more amazing thingamajig (see fig.). That device can show simple 3D objects, for example, cube, helix and etc. 3D-TV was made by Stepan

Meshalkin Stepan Ignatovich & Spectroscopy of iodine vapour little mouse Our Vice-President Toma ponomareva is saving mouse s life with laser help Let us introduce to you our plans. Well, firstly, we re going to take part in various students conferences in spring. Also we will hold the Chapter s conference, which will be named after academician Veniamin P. Chebotaev, who was a graduate of Novosibirsk State Technical University and a creator of the first gas laser in Siberia.

6 Soon we are going to invite foreign researchers to hold several special meetings for ideas exchanging and learning English. Also we plan to visit the main research institutions and centers during the Days of Science, which are usually held in Novosibirsk in spring. Of cause we ll hold various formal and informal meetings for scientific discussions. We plan to deliver some popular-scientific lectures among our members where the senior members or invited speakers will describe about modern optics and optical technologies. We hope that it will promote a scientific growth of our members. The exact schedule for future half tear we are going to compose next sittings in December. In conclusion, we like to note that there are some other nonmentioned actions we plan to realize. For example, now we put in new order our Chapter s room, we plan to significantly refresh our website soon and etc. At last, we must indicate our current balance. Well, at the beginning of the year we got $400. This amount of money was spent on regular sittings and workshop. Now we improve an appearance of our meeting room to make the sittings more comfortable (this also takes some money). The current balance is $35. It ought to be mentioned that our President was awarded SPIE travel grant $1500 for participation in Optics&Photonics. Well, we hope our report wasn t too boring.
