1 Parkside House School Christmas Newsletter We have had a very full and active start to this school year, and the term as always has raced along at lightening speed. Now as we take a minute to decorate the Christmas tree, we can look back at all that has been achieved! Christmas Wishes to all our Pupils, parents, Carers, Governors and brilliant staff. From Mrs Young Latest News Parkside House School would like to welcome the following pupils and staff who have joined us this school year: Mrs Bowman Maths Teacher and Mr Adamson ICT Teacher. Pupils: Elliot Marshall, Luke Cavlerely, Jamie-Lee Cowell, Cheyenne Fulcher, James Dean and Grace Cain. The Christmas Tree is up and pupils and staff are looking forward to Christmas Lunch and the week of activities. Including Bowling, Ice skating, Gravity Force and the Cinema. 2 T H I S T E R M S EV E N T S EV E N I N G It was lovely to see so many parents in school for Parents Evening in October, it is very important for pupils to see good effective communication between home and school. So thank you parents for your full support once again., and we look forward to welcoming you to the next. Fundraising School has been working hard over the term to raise money for those less fortunate than ourselves. We are very proud to have supported the following 4 charities this term. Jeans for Genes- 40 raised McMillan Cancer Support Cake Sale Raised Firefighters charity 14 raised for school- 20 -Firefighters Charity Children in Need 44 Thanksgiving Lunch

3 WANDERERS Cross Country Temple Park South Shields Our team of 7 runners (Azrael, Georgia, Dane, Andrew, Craig, Jordan Brown and Cheyenne) participated in the Wanderers Under 16s Cross Country event at Temple Park at South Shields, competing against schools including Percy Hedley, Trinity, Hilltop and Oakfield School. We had high expectations of our team, following our great performance at last years Cross Country event. We are very proud of our team, who definitely lived up to our expectations. Our pupils demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment throughout the day. This resulted in Georgia and Cheyenne coming 2nd place in the girl s race, winning two medals. This was a great achievement, and it was Cheyenne s first Wanderers event since joining PHS in September. Georgia Donoghue Cheyenne Fulcher

4 Into Film Festival 14th 19th November 2016 Throughout the week a group of pupils from PHS were involved in the Into Film Festival, an event aiming to inspire and encourage young people aged 5-19 to become involved in film and cinema. The festival is the worlds largest free film and education event for young people. The week started with Star Wars-The Force Awakens at the Odeon Silverlink on Tuesday, with Azrael, Dane, Georgia, Logan, James, Elliot, Cheyenne and Josh. On Thursday Grace, Cheyenne and Georgia enjoyed Jane Eyre at the Jam Jar cinema at Whitley Bay. This was also a great way to celebrate Cheyenne's 12th birthday. The week ended with a trip to Gateshead Vue, to see Pete's Dragon, with James, Cheyenne, Georgia, and Mrs Johnson We went to see Star Wars The Force Awakens. The best part was when Rey used her Jedi powers to battle Kilo Ren. My favourite character is Rey because she is a good role model. Dane Turnbull On the 17th of November we saw Pete's Dragon at Vue cinema in Gateshead. My favourite character was Pete, and my favourite part was when he gets a new family. I would give it 10/10 and I'd recommend it to a friend. Georgia Donoghue Jane Eyre is a costume drama about an orphan who is sent to live with her aunt and then to a boarding school. She becomes a governess at Mr Rochester's house and discovers that he is hiding a secret in the attic and then runs away. My favourite character was Jane Eyre because she is the main character and an extremely good actor. Grace Cain.

5 Curriculum Visits Science Visit Centre for Life Genes in a Bottle A group of 8 pupils, the majority studying for their Entry level Certificate in Science and 2 studying for their GCSE Science attended a day at the Centre for Life. In the morning they did a practical activity named Genes in a bottle where they extracted their own DNA from the side of their cheek then did a series of steps to turn it into a precipitate so that they could visually see their DNA in a glass vial, they then placed the vial containing their DNA on a piece of sting, making a necklace. After the practical, pupils visited the various different areas around the museum, including, the planetarium, the science theatre, the brain box, the animal inside out exhibition, 4D motion ride and the ice rink attached to the centre for life. Dane said, My favourite parts of the day were the DNA experiment and then the ice rink. Azrael agreed with Dane but also said he enjoyed the planetarium just as much because he really enjoys learning about space and he found the video very relaxing to watch in the big comfortable chairs. Grace stated she enjoyed the 4D motion ride the best..

7 Curriculum Visits History Visit to the Roman Fort at Housesteads We went on a history visit to a roman fort with Mr Mills and Miss Taylor. Miss Taylor drove the bus and we listened to my music and talked because it was a long drive to the fort. When we got there we had a look around the gift shop. The shop sold different books and toys on the Romans it also sold beer and jam which we thought was funny. It was a long walk up a steep hill that was muddy to get to the fort but there was a path. When we got to the top we looked around the museum which had lots of stuff from the roman times we liked the weapons and pictures the best. The first thing we did was to go into a big classroom with a man from the museum. We had to take our shoes off before we went into the room. In the room we had to look at different objects and decide if they were real or a replica and if they could be used to kill someone. The first object we looked at was a sponge on a stick which the romans used instead of toilet paper. This was disgusting because they would share the sponge with each other. Our favourite objects were the metal ball used in a catapult and the roman ring. When we had done this we had to try and solve a murder of a body that had been found in the fort using clues that were hidden around the fort. Then we had to go back to the classroom and tell the man who we thought had committed the murder and with what weapon. The best part was finding the clues and talking about what evidence there was to find out who was guilty. At the end the man said that nobody knew who killed the man or why. 8 GRAVITY FORCE SUNDERLAND Parkside house school went to gravity force on November the 25th Friday 2016 It was so fun we played basketball and we went in the flume pit but once your in you can t get out. I loved it and I also liked the shop upstairs It has some nice slushes up there but before Gravity Force we went to McDonalds, I had a hot chocolate and ice-cream then we went to Gravity Force in Miss k s car with Georgia and Grace I LOVE GRAVTY FORCE!
