3 Welcome to At-Bristol Science Centre Welcome from Dr Kathy Fawcett, Education Manager Science is all about understanding the universe and how it works from the microscopic to the intergalactic - and creating innovative solutions to its many challenges. We want to encourage students of all ages to feel that science is something they can get excited about, be part of and succeed in. We aim to inspire our 60,000 school visitors each year with incredible experiences that create an enthusiasm to learn more and a sense that science has something to offer every one of us. Why Visit? We support and build on the amazing work you do in school by providing unique, enriching science experiences in a novel context, and all at exceptional value for money. Beyond our hundreds of hands-on exhibits, our workshops and theme days combine fun, practical activities with the development of learning and understanding, with our Studio and new 3D Planetarium offering shows to amaze and inspire. 3
4 What we offer Exhibitions Hundreds of interactive, hands-on exhibits are arranged over two floors, combining new exhibitions with well-loved favourites across a range of subjects to engage everyone from Early Years to Year 6. Our Live Science Team is always on hand to support students learning, with additional daily laboratory experiments in Live Lab, experimental Kitchen and Greenhouse. Pages 6-7 Workshops (typical duration 1 hour) Practical, enquiry-based sessions in our dedicated workshop spaces and laboratories, designed to excite interest and build enthusiasm across a range of topics that support learning in school. With a focus on working and thinking scientifically, our workshops aim to develop understanding and provide opportunities not readily available in school. Pages Theme Days (typical duration 4 hours) Fantastic value, multi-activity days with unique content to inspire your students by immersing them in an exciting science topic. The range of activities and challenges is designed to deepen understanding and promote scientific thinking. The schedule also includes time to explore the main exhibition space within At-Bristol. Pages Science Shows (typical duration 30 min) Vibrant and visual entertainment, exploring scientific ideas and principles. High on fun and humour, packed with lively demonstrations and audience participation, these exclusive shows take place in our special studio within At-Bristol and will inspire students whilst also supporting the curriculum. Pages Planetarium Shows (duration 30 min) Newly redeveloped, the UK s first digital 3D Planetarium is a stunning learning environment inside our iconic silver ball. Take a jaw-dropping journey through the universe in our presenterled shows specifically created for Primary schools, or explore space and other subjects by choosing from a range of specially selected, pre-recorded shows. Many shows are available in both 2D and 3D. 6 Exhibitions Two floors, hundreds of interactive exhibits to intrigue and amaze. Food! Including Experimental Kitchen and Greenhouse A multi-sensory exhibition exploring something that unites us all FOOD! Students can milk a cow, grind their own flour and meet our robot chef for a chat and some inspiring home cooking ideas. Includes an interactive Greenhouse and a Kitchen where our Live Science Team will be on hand to lead students through seasonal, edible demos and activities. All About Us and Live Lab Over 50 hands-on exhibits bring the science of the human body to life, exploring the themes of senses, digestion, reproduction, movement, blood and DNA. Live Lab is our fantastic drop in, openaccess laboratory, with a changing programme of experiments and activities to complement the exhibitions. 7 Space Gallery Newly opened to accompany our new 3D Planetarium. Students can see themselves as astronauts in a space port; try to pick up a holographic Mars rock; see cosmic rays; learn about life in near-earth orbit and discover the challenges of sending humans into deep space. Animate It! The creative and exciting world of animation is brought to life with this cross-curricular experience. Design an animation, create a storyboard and make a film at our animation stations. Creations can be saved and edited back at school using our Explore More facility. Our World Exploring water and rock cycles, energy sources and weather, this exhibition allows students to track upto-date hurricane patterns, blast balls of air to visualise air currents and record their own weather forecast. Supported by SITA Trust. Move It! People have always dreamed of harnessing the power of nature controlling water, making machines and building bridges. In Move It! You can discover exciting inventions and move water with our human hamster wheel. In the Zone Students investigate fitness, sport and exercise while creating their own personal footage. Every interaction is captured on film using Explore More technology and is ready for further exploration when you return to school. Supported by The Wellcome Trust. Build It! An immersive, role-play environment where younger students can get creative in the setting of a working construction site - grabbing a hard hat and high-vis vest before climbing the scaffold to tile the roof, build the walls and transport materials around the site. Curiosity Zone Intriguing phenomena and fascinating experiences. Students can walk through a tornado, make a ship sink, get behind the camera in the TV studio, build bridges with magnetic sand and try and make their way through the disorientating Leaning Lounge. Flight Zone Discover the wonderful world of flight and forces! Levitate a beach ball, add wings and parachutes to flying machines and put them to the test on our Launch It! exhibit. 7

Fossil Finders Discover prehistoric worlds through playful and imaginative games and activities. Students will move like dinosaurs, search for fossils in digpits and find out about some of the amazing creatures that once roamed the Earth. KS: EYF & KS1 Duration: 1h. Fossils & Evolution Travel back in time to discover what rocks and fossils can tell us about the history of life on Earth. Students examine incredible real fossils, collect and interpret evidence on the evolution of a familiar species and spin the Great Evolutionary Wheel of Fortune to learn how evolutionary change is driven by a struggle for survival in a changing environment. Supported by Curry Fund of The Geologists Association KS2 Duration: 1.5h Data Heads A dragster race allows students to consider the variety of ways we can communicate information using graphs. They examine some important engineering features of a racing car and conduct investigations using model dragsters. KS2 Duration 1h LEGO Robotics An introduction to robotics and programming using exciting LEGO technology. Students write simple algorithms to operate sensors on a robot, navigate a map and complete a mission (no prior knowledge of programming required). Supported by the Institution of Engineering and Technology KS2 Duration 1.5h Go Animate This cross-curricular workshop explores the creative and technical aspects of animation. From storyboarding to sound effects, student teams write, direct, create and premiere their own short film. KS2 Duration 1h 10
11 Walking with Minibeasts New! Booking from January The amazing world of insect biodiversity is discovered as students walk along our huge classification key to identify a real insect specimen, before creating their own crazy creature and testing it with our survival wheel of fortune! KS2 Duration 1h Go Explore This sensory workshop uses unusual artefacts and engaging stories to transport students to a range of exciting global habitats and helps them consider what life would be like in each of them. EYFS & KS1 Duration: 1h Jungle Senses Experience the sounds, smells and feel of a rainforest and discover what lives and grows there. Students help create a jungle, feel real python skin, recreate a rain storm and make their own animal mask to take home. EYFS & KS1 Duration: 1h Choose Health New! Booking from January A new workshop for students about to enter their more independent secondary years, examining the links between diet, exercise, lifestyle and health - and the decision-making process that underpins healthy behaviour. KS2 (Upper) Duration 1h Healthy Bodies This lively workshop follows the journey of food through our bodies and considers what a healthy lifestyle and diet looks like. The role of teeth, stomach and intestines are examined using investigations and demonstrations. Supported by Simplyhealth. KS2 (Lower) Duration 1h Body Basics Students test their senses, discover what separates living and non-living things and meet Mr Stuffee - our giant doll with removable organs - to learn about our bodies and the basic needs of life. KS1 Duration 1h 11
12 Workshops Additional 2.95 Group size min. 12 max. 30 (except Colourful Chemistry max. 24) Building enthusiasm and supporting learning. Water Cycle Students use heat and ice to create their own model water cycle in our laboratory and observe how freezing, melting, evaporation and condensation make rivers flow and provide our fresh water. They see a cloud made from dry ice and investigate factors affecting surface run-off. KS2 (upper) Duration: 1h Colourful Chemistry An illuminating, lab-based insight into the wonderful world of chemistry and some of its real-life applications. Students use Bunsen burners, metal salts, glowing reactions and more to explore a variety of contrasting and highly visual reactions. KS2 (upper) Duration: 1h Changing Materials Hear dry ice scream, see crispy rice burnt with a blow torch and explore the weirdness of slime in this exploration of the different states of matter. Cheese making and launching effervescent rockets add to the fun. KS2 Duration: 1h Electricity Unearthed Students learn about energy sources that we can use to generate electricity, investigate conduction properties of different materials (including the human body!) and apply their understanding to build circuits. KS2 Duration: 1h Build It! Budding young engineers and construction crews use purpose-made, tabletop houses to explore the properties of everyday building materials, before applying their new skills to work as a team and build a much larger house! Supported by the Ernest Cook Trust. KS1 Duration: 1h 12
13 Pushes & Pulls Students investigate forces by launching rockets, sailing boats and pushing each other around in trolleys, and explore the language we use to describe these phenomena. KS1 Duration: 1h Forces & Magnets Gravity, friction, air resistance and magnetism are explored as students use data loggers to compare how vehicles travel on different surfaces and investigate the magnetic properties of some familiar materials. KS2 Duration: 1h Fantastic Forces How do forces affect our everyday lives? Demonstrations and experimentation reveal the effects of gravity and air resistance as students predict, observe and record results about these fundamental phenomena. KS2 Duration: 1h Light & Shadow A fun-filled, experimental exploration of the nature and properties of light. Students use diffraction glasses, prisms and ray boxes to understand shadow, split white light, mix coloured lights and observe how laser light travels. KS2 Duration: 1h Earth, Sun & Moon Our Magic Globe shows how the movement of the Earth relates to day and night. KS2 students learn about the seasons, make moon dials and see what would happen to a marshmallow person in space. KS1 students learn about planetary orbits by finding out how many birthdays they would have if they lived on Saturn! KS 1 & 2 Duration: 1h 13
14 Theme Days including admission and all activities. Group size min. 12 max. 60. Duration 4 hours including lunch and time on exhibition floor. Explore a topic for a day, in a unique and exciting way! System Earth New! What does green actually mean, what is the science behind it all and why should we care at all? Activities include a 3D Planetarium show, exclusive activities in which they can measure the warming effect of CO 2 using data loggers, try out a solar cooker, take a trail around our exhibits, classify incredible insects and even dress up like a tree! This amazing day will get students excited, thinking about the causes and consequences of climate change and the contribution we can all make. Upper KS2 Maths Mission Numeracy with a space twist! Beginning with a special Planetarium show, students help a lost alien to find its way home before applying maths skills to plan a journey, measure time and use patterns and shapes. The day concludes with a Studio show and adds up to a great way to explore the practical use of maths. KS 1 & Lower KS2 14
15 Brain & Body An exciting day of challenges, trails, workshops, shows and exhibits in which students learn more about their own amazing bodies, use digital microscopes, examine animal skulls and see how their digestive system works. KS 1 & Lower KS2 Forensics Academy Students become Crime Scene Investigators in At-Bristol s laboratories to analyse evidence collected from a crime scene amongst the exhibits. Teams of budding scientists use techniques such as fingerprinting, casting, microscopy, chromatography and DNA extraction to find out whodunnit! Upper KS2 High Flyers This inspiring and active day comprises the exclusive Altitude Show* in the studio, exploration in our Flight gallery and a special workshop session investigating wing structure. It concludes with the design and construction of parachutes for teams to test on our Launch It! exhibit. * For Upper KS2 students the 3D Planetarium show Dream to Fly is offered as an optional alternative, subject to discussion with the Bookings Team. KS2 15
16 Studio Shows Additional Group size min. 15 max. 70. Duration 30 minutes. Vibrant and visual science with lots of audience participation. Brainworks Emotions and illusions are used to investigate and to explore the links between the brain and the senses building to a game show-style finale that challenges them to identify the senses used in a range of situations. KS1 & Lower KS2 Boggling Brains A good dose of humour and audience participation reveals the structure and function of our amazing brains and the equipment we use to see them. Visual, motor and language functions are examined and students even get the chance to dress up as a neurone. Upper KS2 How my body works Active demonstrations involve students in exploring the effect of exercise on the lungs, using a model heart to pump fake blood, acting as opposing muscle pairs and investigating the function of sweat glands! KS2 16
17 Splash & Bubble This bubbling and explosive show engages students with liquids, gases and ideas about volume and making measurements. Watch as we make water disappear and seem to defy gravity with floating bubbles. KS1 & Lower KS2 Light Fantastic What is light, where does light come from and how does it travel? Investigate laser beams, observe light rays using smoke and mirrors and experiment with invisibility as we explore the true nature of this amazing form of energy. KS2 Launch It! How do rockets make it all the way into space? Discover the story of Yuri Gagarin, the first person to travel into space as, with whizzes, bangs and rockets this loud and exciting show investigates propulsive forces and explosions. Supported by Rolls-Royce. KS2 Field Day Forces Take a trip to the park to discover why you can t win a race with the brakes on, find out how to make the biggest splash in a puddle and see which falls first the chicken or the egg. Students will see friction, watch a feather fall through a vacuum and use pulleys to hoist a student (or teacher!). KS2 17

PR Pre Recorded Show PL Presenter led Space Explorers Our presenters will train students up as fully qualified Space Explorers! They will blast off to visit various planets in our solar system, whizz out of our own Milky Way galaxy and play fun games such as pass the planet! EYFS 2D PL Seasonal Stargazing We will guide you on a journey around the seasonal night sky to visit an amazing host of astronomical destinations. Fly through the rings of Saturn, investigate star colours, explore a black hole and witness the spectacle of our Milky Way galaxy. KS1 & 2 3D & 2D PL Exploring the Solar System Our familiar show returns - but now in new 3D style! Take a grand tour of our Solar System using the latest telescopes images and view Earth relative to the movements of the Sun, Moon and stars. KS2 3D & 2D PL Blue Marvel The pale blue dot on which we all live is viewed from the perspective of its place in the solar system and the impact that our growing population is having on our home planet. 19 We Are Aliens Could there be life elsewhere in the universe and, if so, how might we find it? This enchanting film explains the fascinating science behind the search clearly and engagingly, with the help of stunning 3D graphics. Year 2 & Upper KS2 3D PR Dreams to Fly From the flying carpets and phoenix of legend to balloons and war planes, this film explores the development of aviation through the ages presenting the milestones on our route to conquering the skies. Rich visuals, beautiful music and poetic narration make this show a powerful experience. Contains some strong scenes please discuss when booking Upper KS2 3D PR Invaders of Mars! Charting the history of our fascination with the red planet. Dissection Lab 14 Oct to 2 Dec 2015 Investigate the anatomy of animal organs as the Live Science Team guides you through handson dissections, from tugging on heart-strings to peeking through an eyeball. Dissections are suitable for ages seven and over. 20
