1 Dear Parents, It hardly seems possible that we are at half term already but the children have worked very hard indeed so I am sure that they feel they deserve the holiday. We have certainly had more than our share of illness throughout this half term and it is to be hoped that the holiday will give us all the boost we need to be able to enjoy the forthcoming weeks. While everyone has been busy, as the Micklefield Messenger always shows, our Year 6 children have been engaged in their senior school examinations culminating in most results being released today. The children have sat entrance examinations for over 9 schools, many requiring a separate interview and assessment day for those aspiring to Sport, Music, Performing Arts or Art examinations. We know that they have tried hard and wish them every success in opening those envelopes! Once Year 6 parents have made their choices we will be in a position to publish the children s results and begin the preparation for a happy and successful transfer to senior school. In the same way that we celebrate those achievements we also use the Micklefield Messenger to highlight the children s successes along the way. It is an important part of school life and we recently had an assembly where two of our Year 3 boys showed an amazing domino run in a short film that they had made. Setting up the run itself took a very long time and the practise involved in maintaining a complete run was admirable. The point of the assembly was to remind us all that practise is an important part of success and from that we gain confidence. We hope that the Micklefield Messenger will continue to celebrate all that we aspire to be and all that we achieve in each area of learning but we are aware that it lacks the spontaneity of modern communication! We have decided that sharing the children s news in real time is more important than collating it (and sometimes having to hold it back!) for this type of newsletter. From now on the news will go on to the official school Facebook and website pages as soon as possible. We have not been asked for a paper copy of the MM for a long time but one could be made available if needed. 1

2 We are all looking forward to our forthcoming Theme Week and I am sure that when you have your copy of the programme for Out of this World you will see that our staff have been working very creatively indeed to make this an inspirational and enjoyable week for the children. This is an opportunity to thank the staff for all their hard work this half term when there is cover for sick colleagues, to FOM for their work in creating activities for the children and supporting the school and to our governors who also work to support the school during school hours and beyond. Thank you for you presenting the children with everything they need to make the most of the school day and for all that you have done to get 2018 off to such a good start! Lyn Rose Headmistress 2

6 ROMAN DAY in YEAR 3 Year 3 have had another very successful Roman Day; the children loved coming into school in costume and playing the part of Romans living in a Roman fort for the day. They had a busy morning experiencing making a variety of things including mosaics, fresco paintings and wax tablets, whilst hearing and spreading the news of Boudicca s revolt against the Romans. The children really entered into the spirit of reliving this story and were very relieved to hear the Roman soldiers were finally successful! In the afternoon they celebrated their success with a feast and entertainment, including dancing, a play and a demonstration of the famous Roman soldier battle formations 6

9 Preps enjoy learning about Dinosaurs! This half-term Preps have been focusing on their term topic All Creatures Great and Small. They have been learning all about dinosaurs and have had a stomping time doing so! During P.E. the children have enjoyed moving to music, fast like a velociraptor and as slow as a diplodocus. They have been acting out favourite stories with a twist such as, We re going on a Dinosaur Hunt. During cooking, they have baked everything from fossil treats to veggie pizzas for herbivores. The children are so proud of their amazing writing to the Grumpy T-rex in Dear Dinosaur. There has been lots of fun digging, sorting and counting lots of exciting dinosaur resources. The children ended with a finale learning about how dinosaurs became extinct; one of the theories is that it was a volcano that ended the era of dinosaurs and the children had an explosive time being scientists and making an erupting volcano. The children even thought to add toy dinosaurs to animate what happened!. 9
