Dear Parents, What an eventful half term this has proved to be. While the school diary may scaffold our regular events and planned enrichment activities for the children it does not account for one day notice inspections by ISI or the fire brigade! Fortunately, both unscheduled events proved beneficial and we will shortly be able to send out our Regulatory Compliance Inspection Report and, as its title suggests, it is a rather dry read. It merely reports on whether or not we meet the Independent School Standards in the eight categories required by the Department for Education. While the embargo on divulging the outcome is still in place, I think I can say that we are all very proud of the outcome. While we have regular fire alarm testing and evacuation procedures we have never been able to assess the way that out fire detection system links to the fire service. We have seen for ourselves that it works extremely quickly and the firefighters know their way around the building. Those events aside, we have had a great term with some outstanding successes in all areas of school life. Although the Year 6 results have been out for some time it would be remiss of me not to congratulate the children on their outstanding offers and 30 scholarships from 13 selective Independent schools in this forum too. They have been an extraordinarily talented and hardworking cohort and we wish them continued success in the future. The Preparatory children have celebrated their successes in getting used to school by performing the Caterpillar Boogie to their families and what a great performance it was. We were all very impressed by their new vocabulary so please do ask your Prep child if they remember what a lepidopterist does! Lower School celebrated their work in their own indomitable way with each class contributing to the Out Of This World theme in song and rhyme. The Lower School musicians gained valuable performance experience and impressed us all with their confidence, especially as most were facing an audience for the first time. The enthusiastic singing has given us hope for future choir members too. 1

Beyond the classroom we have had the challenges of Micklefield Day to test mind and body (that may also have been true of the staff who only saw the instructions minutes before the children!) We are very grateful to FOM for organising the day and for generously funding it too. It was certainly a day for teamwork and effective communication and the children enjoyed the tasks although some seemed almost impossible at the time. FOM also organised the first summer event, Micklefest Day on the field. Despite the gathering clouds, the event was well attended and the children had a great time. It was lovely to see so many families enjoying the event and each other s company. Who would have thought that a chance conversation with Mrs Easton would have led to that fantastic band and the carnival atmosphere they created. A great day despite the rain at the very end so thank you to FOM and especially Mrs Walker who has been nurturing that idea since her son joined Preps some 8 years ago. We are looking forward to our traditional events and hope that you will be able to join us for Sports Days, the Year 5 and 6 performances of the musical version of The Tempest and our end of Year Concert. Naturally, the older children are also very excited about their forthcoming residential trips to Windmill Hill and Hardelot in France. I must admit that I m not quite so excited by the GDPR legislation but I daresay that our specialist consultant will be able to cast light on the ramifications for running our school. You can rest assured that we will be compliant. I am very grateful to the staff and governors for their support this term, particularly through the inspection, the preparation for GDPR and for the staff s support in covering for absent colleagues. Mr Bracken is making a good recovery from his fractured leg and both Mrs Lish and Mrs Hiscock have had their babies, Cecily and Tom respectively. If you have helped with matches, transport, off site visits, costume making or by supporting our events thank you very much for all you have done. There will be a Swap Over Day on July 5 th when our children and their new classmates will have the opportunity to meet their next teachers in their new classrooms. 2

This is always a term of mixed emotions as we meet new and aspiring Micklefield parents with their children while the knowledge that we will soon be saying farewell to Year 6 is in the background too. This term we have heard how difficult it is to buy or rent property in Reigate so we know that several of our newly registered families will have to join us later in the year. Whenever they are able to arrive we know that they will receive a great welcome as we have no strangers here and we strive to honour that pledge. Best wishes to you all for a happy half term, Lyn Rose Headmistress 3

New School back friendly rucksack. Now available from SWOTS. As you know, the children s school bags are of a style that was appropriate and functional years ago. Now that the Upper School children carry water bottles, snacks and other personal belongings in addition to their school work (and ipads in Year 6) it is clear that they are not so well designed. Much more importantly they are not the best fit for the children s backs and we can see that most children have the shoulder straps somewhere just above their elbows, causing them to tilt backwards. We have sourced a back pack from SWOTS that has supportive padding, wider straps and is generally a better ergonomic design to enable the children to carry it properly and safely. It is not a mandatory change at the moment but is available to children in Upper School in two sizes. It is available now should you wish to consider it. Lyn Rose 15

A reminder The whole school photograph will take place Friday 8th June. All children will be expected to attend school that morning, (including Preps) All children will need to be in full, summer uniform (except Y6) All children will need to be in their blazers (except Preps) Please remember suncream. 16
