9 Chapter 1: Overview Chapter 1: Overview StrEdge is SlarEdge's all-in-ne slutin that uses a single n-grid DC ptimized inverter t manage and mnitr bth slar pwer generatin and energy strage. Hmewners are autmatically prvided with backup pwer in the event f grid interruptin t pwer pre-selected lads. Slar energy can be stred in a battery fr Smart Energy Management applicatins such as exprt cntrl, ffering demand respnse and peak shaving, and perfrming time f use shifting fr reduced electric bills. The StrEdge Slutin Cmpnents The StrEdge Inverter with StrEdge Cnnectin Unit - The inverter manages battery and system energy, in additin t its traditinal functinality as a DC-ptimized PV inverter. The StrEdge Cnnectin Unit, lcated at the bttm f the inverter, allws simple installatin and cnnectivity t ther system cmpnents and includes a DC Safety Switch. The SlarEdge Electricity Meter - The meter is used by the inverter fr exprt/ cnsumptin readings, and fr Smart Energy Management applicatins, such as: exprt limitatin, time-f-use prfile prgramming and maximizing self-cnsumptin. The meter is required nly in systems using Smart Energy Management applicatins (it is nt required fr StrEdge systems used nly fr backup pwer). The Aut-transfrmer - The aut-transfrmer handles the phase lad balancing. It is required nly in systems prviding backup pwer. The Battery - A DC cupled battery designed t wrk with the SlarEdge system. NOTE Figure 1: StrEdge system cmpnents Additinal SlarEdge inverters (withut batteries) can be cnnected with RS485. The inverters will participate in exprt limitatin and maximizing self-cnsumptin (Maximizing self-cnsumptin fr multiple inverters supprted frm Q2 2016). Cnnecting multiple inverters with RS485 master-slave cnnectin requires an RS485 Expansin Kit (available frm SlarEdge). Step 1 - PV system installatin - mdules, pwer ptimizers and inverter: Pwer ptimizers - as described in Installing the Pwer Optimizers n page 10. Inverter - as described in Installing the Inverter n page 17. Chapter 1: Overview Step 2 - SlarEdge Aut-transfrmer and AC lad panel installatin (required fr Backup Pwer nly): Refer t Aut-transfrmer and Backed-up Lads Panel Installatin (fr Backup Only) n page 24. 11 Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Safety The fllwing ntes and warnings apply when installing the pwer ptimizers. mdules: WARNING! When mdifying an existing installatin, turn OFF the inverter ON/OFF switch, the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit Safety Switch and the AC circuit breaker n the main AC distributin panel. 12 Chapter 2: Installing the Pwer Optimizers Sectinner les cables d entrées u de srtie de l ptimiseur est interdit et annule sa garantie. CAUTION! Pwer ptimizers are IP65/NEMA4 rated. Chse a munting lcatin where ptimizers will nt be submerged in water. Les ptimiseurs de puissances snt cmpatibles à la nrme IP65/NEMA4. Chisissez le lieu de mntage tel que l ptimiseur ne puisse pas être submergé par l eau. CAUTION! All PV mdules must be cnnected t a pwer ptimizer. Tus les mdules divent être cnnectés à un ptimiseur de puissance. CAUTION! If yu intend t munt the ptimizers directly t the mdule r mdule frame, first cnsult the mdule manufacturer fr guidance regarding the munting lcatin and the impact, if any, n mdule warranty. Drilling hles in the mdule frame shuld be dne accrding t the mdule manufacturer instructins. Installing a SlarEdge system withut ensuring cmpatibility f the mdule cnnectrs with the ptimizer cnnectrs may be unsafe and culd cause functinality prblems such as grund faults, resulting in inverter shut dwn. In rder t ensure mechanical cmpatibility f the SlarEdge ptimizers and the mdules t which they are cnnected: Use identical cnnectrs frm the same manufacturer and f the same type n bth the pwer ptimizers and n the mdules; r Verify that the cnnectrs are cmpatible in the fllwing way: The cnnectr manufacturer shuld explicitly verify cmpatibility with the SlarEdge ptimizer cnnectr; and A third-party test reprt by ne f the listed external labs (TUV, VDE, Bureau Veritas UL, CSA, InterTek) shuld be btained, verifying the cmpatibility f the cnnectrs. Vérifiez que les cnnecteurs snt cmpatibles de la manière suivante: Le fabricant du cnnecteur dit explicitement vérifier la cmpatibilité avec le cnnecteur SlarEdge. Un rapprt de test de tierce partie dit être effectué par l un des labratires externes indiqués ci-dessus:(tuv, VDE, Bureau Veritas UL, CSA,Intertek), qui vérifiera la cmpatibilité des cnnecteurs. IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE Mdules with SlarEdge pwer ptimizers are safe. They carry nly a lw safety vltage befre the inverter is turned ON. As lng as the pwer ptimizers are nt cnnected t the inverter r the inverter is turned OFF, each pwer ptimizer will utput a safe vltage f 1V. SlarEdge-StrEdge Installatin Guide MAN

13 Package Cntents Package Cntents Pwer ptimizers Stainless steel grunding lck washers Installatin Guidelines The steps in this chapter refer t mdule add-n pwer ptimizers. Fr smart mdules, start frm Step 3: Cnnecting Pwer Optimizers in Strings n page 15. Als refer t the dcumentatin supplied with the smart mdules. The pwer ptimizer can be placed in any rientatin. Psitin the pwer ptimizer clse enugh t its mdule s that their cables can be cnnected. T allw fr heat dissipatin, maintain a 2.5 cm/ 1" clearance distance between the pwer ptimizer and ther surfaces. The minimum and maximum string length guidelines are stated in the pwer ptimizer datasheets. Refer t the SlarEdge Site Designer fr string length verificatin. The SlarEdge Site Designer is available n the SlarEdge website at under Sftware Tls. Cmpletely shaded mdules may cause their pwer ptimizers t temprarily shut dwn. This will nt affect the perfrmance f the ther pwer ptimizers in the string, as lng as the minimum number f unshaded pwer ptimizers cnnected in a string f mdules is met. If under typical cnditins fewer than the minimum ptimizers are cnnected t unshaded mdules, add mre ptimizers t the string. D nt leave the pwer ptimizers cnnectrs discnnected. Open cnnectrs shuld be mated t each ther. Equipment grunding tightening trques: 4-6 AWG: 45 lb-in, 8 AWG: 40 lb-in, AWG: 35 lb-in. NOTE The images cntained in the fllwing sectins are fr illustrative purpses nly and may vary depending n prduct mdels. Step 1: Munting and Grunding the Pwer Optimizers Fr each f the pwer ptimizers 1 : 1. Determine the pwer ptimizer munting lcatin and use the pwer ptimizer munting brackets t attach the pwer ptimizer t the supprt structure (See Figure 2). Fr frame-munted pwer ptimizers fllw the instructins supplied with the ptimizers. 2. If required, mark the munting hle lcatins and drill the hle. CAUTION! D nt drill thrugh the pwer ptimizer r thrugh the munting hles. The drilling vibratins can damage the pwer ptimizer and will vid the warranty. 14 3. Attach each pwer ptimizer t the rack using the M6 (1/4'') stainless steel blts, nuts and washers. Apply trque f 9.5 N*m / 7 lb*ft. The grunding terminal accepts a wire size f 6-14 AWG, and must be sized fr equipment grunding per NEC requirements. Therefre, the ttal string vltage shuld be equal t 1V times the number f pwer ptimizers cnnected in series in the string. Fr example, if 10 pwer ptimizers are cnnected in a string, then 10V shuld be prduced. Make sure the mdules are expsed t sunlight during this prcess; therwise, the pwer ptimizers may nt be pwered. If yu use a tracker, the pwer ptimizer will turn ON nly if the tracker is tracking the sun and the mdule prvides at least 2W. In SlarEdge systems, due t the intrductin f pwer ptimizers between the PV mdules and the inverter, the shrt circuit current I SC and the pen circuit vltage V OC hld different meanings frm thse in traditinal systems. 21 Opening Cnduit Knckuts Safety Switch: discnnects bth the psitive and negative cnductrs f the PV and the psitive and negative cnductrs f the battery. Backed-up Lads AC Breaker: Main AC breaker fr the backed-up lads. Ensure this breaker is UP befre staring up the system. Bypass Switch: This switch bypasses the inverter functinality in case f inverter malfunctin. Maintaining pwer t the backed-up lads is enabled by cnnecting the lads directly t the grid. There are three switch psitins. The fllwing table describes the functinality and use f each psitin: Switch psitin Use Case Functinality 1 (left) Nrmal peratin 2 (right) AC bypass Use this mde at nrmal peratin. The backed-up lads panel is cnnected thrugh the sftware cntrlled switches t the AC grid (during nrmal peratin), r t the inverter (via aut-transfrmer, fr backup pwer). Using this mde disables the backup functinality. The backed-up lads panel is cnnected directly t the AC grid thrugh the bypass switch. Use in case f inverter malfunctin. 0 Nt in use Same as 2. Opening Cnduit Knckuts This step may be perfrmed after r befre munting the inverter. The knckuts fr AC grid, PV DC and battery DC are already pen. If required, use this prcedure fr pening additinal knckuts. Fr AC cnnectins yu can use ne f the fllwing cnduit penings ptins: Optin 1 - Cnnect the AC grid and backup lads wires using the AC pening (knckut already pen; n need t pen an additinal knckut). In this case use minimum 1" cnduit fr inserting all wires. Optin 2 - Use tw separate cnduits: minimum 1" cnduit fr the AC grid cnnectin and 3/4" cnduit fr the lad backup cnnectin. In this case, an additinal knckut shuld be pened fr the backed-up lads. T pen cnduit knckuts: 1. Mve the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit safety switch and the inverter ON/OFF switch t OFF. NOTE When the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit safety switch is OFF (fr example during maintenance) it may be lcked t prevent safety hazard: 1. Mve the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit safety switch t the Lck psitin. 2. 23 Munting the Inverter Munting the Inverter NOTE Make sure the munting surface r structure can supprt the weight f the inverter, and make sure that it spans the width f the bracket. CAUTION! HEAVY OBJECT. T avid muscle strain r back injury, use prper lifting techniques, and if required - a lifting aid when remving r replacing. Objet lurd. At least 8" (20 cm) t the bttm f the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit; if cnduit entry t the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit will be frm the bttm, leave sufficient clearance fr the cnduits as well. 4" (10 cm) t the right and left f the inverter. If installing multiple inverters: When installing inverters ne abve the ther, leave at least 8" (20 cm) between the tp f an inverter and the bttm f a StrEdge Cnnectin Unit. When installing inverters side by side, leave 20 cm / 8" between inverters. 2. Psitin the munting bracket against the wall/ple and mark the drilling hle lcatins : Ensure that the flat side f the bracket is at the bttm, as in Figure 12. Use at least tw bracket hles. Additinal hles can be used t fix the bracket. Determine which and hw many hles t use accrding t munting surface type and material. 3. Drill the hles and munt the bracket. Verify that the bracket is firmly attached t the munting surface. NOTE When munting an inverter n an uneven surface, yu may use spacers/ washers behind the tp munting hle f the bracket (see ). Depending n the angle, use the apprpriate size and number f spacers s that the bracket is perpendicular t the grund. Recmmended: a stainless steel 3/4" lng screw, with a 1/4" scket buttn head, tw jam nuts and three washers. 4. Hang the inverter n the bracket (see Figure 12): Lift the inverter frm the sides, r hld it at the tp and bttm f the inverter t lift the unit int place. Insert the tw supplied screws thrugh the uter heat sink fin n bth sides f the inverter and int the bracket (see Figure 12). Tighten the screws with a trque f 4.0 N*m / 2.9 lb.*ft. 7. Install the bracket with the flat side facing dwn. Verify that the bracket is firmly attached t the munting surface. 3. Hang the aut-transfrmer n the bracket: Lift the aut-transfrmer frm the sides, r hld it at the tp and bttm t lift the unit int place. 4. Insert the tw supplied screws thrugh the uter heat sink fin n bth sides f the aut-transfrmer and int the bracket. Tighten the screws with a trque f 4.0 N*m / 2.9 lb.*ft. Cnnect the DC wires frm the PV installatin t the DC+ and DC- terminal blcks, accrding t the labels n the terminals: a. Insert a flat blade screwdriver int the square pening at the tp f the terminal blck and press t pen clamp mechanism. b. Insert the wire int the rund pening and release the screwdriver t spring back and clamp the wire. Check that the wire is fully inserted and cannt be pulled ut easily. CAUTION! Ensure that the Plus (+) wire is cnnected t the Plus (+) terminal and that the Minus (-) wire is cnnected t the Minus (-) terminal cnnectr. 31 Cnnecting t the Battery Cnnecting t the Battery T simplify the cnnectin prcess it is advised t cnnect the battery t the inverter befre munting the battery accrding t the manufacturer instructins. Fllw these guidelines: Fr easy access t battery cnnectrs, it is recmmended t cnnect the cables t the battery and t set all the battery DIP switches t their crrect psitins while the battery is still n the grund. The fllwing prcedure is recmmended: a. Cnnect all the wires t the battery cnnectin panel b. Munt the battery c. Assemble the cnduit between the battery and the inverter d. Cnnect t the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit Measure the necessary length between the StrEdge Cnnectin Unit and the battery fr all cables. The maximum distance between the battery and the inverter is 35 ft/ 10m, when using 16AWG fr battery thermal pwer and 24AWG fr battery cntrl. Tie and wrap the cables t avid pulling them ut during munting. Be sure t adhere t all safety cautins and infrmatin in the battery dcumentatin. The battery cnnects t the DC side f the inverter. Since the inverter DC cnnectins are n its left side, it is recmmended t psitin the battery t the left f the inverter t simplify wiring. NOTE Per NEC requirements, if the battery is mre than 5ft/ 1.5m away frm the inverter, an additinal external DC switch ia required adjacent t the battery. Perfrm this step when the mdules are expsed t sunlight. If the string length is changed r a pwer ptimizer is replaced, repeat the pairing prcess. 1. Initially after pairing, bth XXX and YYY values shw 000 and the values increase as paired pwer ptimizers are reprted. NOTE It may take up t 20 minutes fr all pwer ptimizers t transmit their telemetries and t be cunted n the LCD screen. S_OK appears, if the inverter is cnnected t the SlarEdge mnitring prtal. Vac [V] specifies the measured grid AC utput vltage. Vdc [v] : Specifies the DC input vltage, which shuld equal the sum f the utput vltages f all mdules (and shuld be within the perating range f the inverter). Pac [W] specifies the ttal AC utput pwer prduced. 2. Take nte f the serial # n the inverter label using the detachable 2D barcde sticker n each device. This infrmatin is used in the SlarEdge mnitring prtal t identify this inverter and is needed t pen a new site in the mnitring prtal. Yur SlarEdge pwer harvesting system is nw peratinal. Step 4: Reprting and Mnitring Installatin Data NOTE This step requires cnnecting ne f the cmmunicatin ptins. Refer t Setting Up Cmmunicatin t the Mnitring Prtal n page 71. When the cmmunicatin between the inverter and the mnitring server is established, the lgical layut is displayed. T display a physical layut, yu need t map the lcatins f the installed pwer ptimizers. T generate a physical mapping, use either the Site Mapper applicatin r a mapping template, which shuld be filled ut using the detachable stickers (see Prviding Installatin Infrmatin, belw). The lgical and physical mapping can be used fr debugging a prblem using the SlarEdge mnitring prtal. If yu d nt reprt the physical and lgical mapping f the installed pwer ptimizers t SlarEdge, the SlarEdge mnitring prtal will shw the lgical layut indicating which pwer ptimizers are cnnected t which inverter, but will nt shw strings r the physical lcatin f pwer ptimizers. The inverter may be cnnected t the SlarEdge mnitring prtal via LAN r via an external mdem cnnected t the inverter's RS232 cnnectr. Use insulatin tape t islate each f the AC and DC wires. Seal the pen cnduits using duct tape. 10. Place the new inverter n the munting bracket; insert the screws securing the inverter t the munting bracket. 11.
