10 Average sensing RMS calibrated RMS (Rt-Mean-Square) is the term used t describe the effective r equivalent DC value f an AC signal. Mst digital multimeters use average sensing RMS calibrated technique t measure RMS values f AC signals. This technique is t btain the average value by rectifying and filtering the AC signal. The average value is then scaled upward (calibrated) t read the RMS value f a sine wave. In measuring pure sinusidal wavefrms, this technique is fast, accurate, and cst effective. Inmeasuring nn-sinusidal wavefrms, hwever, significant errrs can be intrduced because f different scaling factrs relating average t RMS values. AC True RMS AC True RMS, nrmally refers as True RMS, identifies a DMM functin that is AC cupled, and respnds accurately nly t the effective RMS AC cmpnent value regardless f the wavefrms. Hwever, DC cmpnent plays an imprtant rle in the distrted nn-symmetrical wavefrms, and will als be f interest smetimes. A full wave rectified sine wavefrm is a gd example, and the AC true RMS functin will nly give the AC cmpnent reading which is at 43.6% f the ttal effective DC+AC RMS reading. DC+AC True RMS DC + AC True RMS calculates bth f the AC and DC cmpnents given by the expressin 2 2 DC +(AC rms) When making measurement, and can respnd accurately t the ttal effective RMS value regardless f the wavefrm. Distrted wavefrms with the presence f DC cmpnents and harmnics may cause: 1) Overheated transfrmers, generatrs and mtrs t burn ut faster than nrmal 2) Circuit breakers t trip prematurely. 3) Fuses t blw 4) Neutrals t verheat due t the triplen harmnics present n the neutral 5) Bus bars and electrical panels t vibrate AC Bandwidth AC bandwidth f a DMM is the range f frequencies ver which AC measurements can be made within the specified accuracy. It is nt the frequency measurement functin, and is the frequency respnse f the AC functins. A DMM cannt accurately measure the AC value with frequency spectrums beynd the AC bandwidth f the DMM. Therefre, wide AC bandwidth plays an imprtant rle in high perfrmance DMMs. In reality, cmplex wavefrms, nise and distrted wavefrms cntain much higher frequency spectrum than its fundamental

11 NMRR (Nrmal Mde Rejectin Rati) NMRR is the DMM's ability t reject unwanted AC nise effect that can cause inaccurate DC measurements. NMRR is typically specified in terms f db (decibel). This series has a NMRR specificatin f > 60dB at 50 and 60Hz, which is a gd and definite ability t reject the effect f nise when making DC measurements. 6) OPERATION CAUTION Befre and after hazardus vltage measurements, test the vltage functin n a knwn surce such as line vltage t determine prper meter functining. CMRR (Cmman Mde Rejectin Rati) Cmmn mde vltage is vltage present n bth the COM and VOLTAGE input terminals f a DMM, with respect t grund. CMRR is the DMM's ability t reject cmmn mde vltage effect that can cause digit rlling r ffset in vltage measurements. This series has a CMRR specificatins f > 80dB at DC t 60Hz in ACV functin; and > 120dB at DC, 50 and 60Hz in DCV functin. If neither NMRR nr CMRR specificatin is specified, a DMM's perfrmance will be uncertain. Analg bar-graph The analg bar graph prvides a visual indicatin f measurement like a traditinal analg meter needle. It is excellent in detecting faulty cntacts, identifying ptentimeter clicks, and indicating signal spikes during adjustments. Analg bargraph is nt available in AC+DC True RMS Vltage & Current mdes. AC Vltage, DC Vltage, DC+AC Vltage, & ~Hz Line Level Frequency In AC Vltage, press SELECT buttn mmentarily t tggle between AC and dbm. In DC Vltage, press SELECT buttn mmentarily t tggle between DC, and DC+AC. 13 Nte : Line Level Frequency measuring functin input sensitivity varies autmatically with vltage (r current) functin range selected. The lwer the measuring range the higher the sensitivity. That is, mv functin has the highest and the 1000V range has the lwest as in vltage functin ranges. It is recmmended t first measure the signal vltage (r current) level then activate the Hz functin in that vltage (r current) range t autmatically get the mst apprprite trigger level. When activated frm vltage functin, yu can als press the RANGE buttn mmentarily t select anther trigger level range manually. The analg bargraph pinter will pint at the selected trigger level range scale 1, 2, 3, r 4. If the Hz reading is unstable, select lwer sensitivity t avid electrical nise. If the reading shws zer, select higher sensitivity. Hz Lgic Level Frequency and % Duty Cycle functins:- Press SELECT buttn mmentarily t tggle between Hz and % (duty cycle) readings. The new setting will be saved autmatically t the nnvlatile memry as pwer up default. Cntinuity functin is cnvenient fr checking wiring cnnectins and peratin f switched. A cntinuus beep tne indicates a cmplete wire. CAPACITANCE, FUNCTION DIODE TEST Press SELECT buttn mmentarily t tggle between Capacitance and Dide test functin. The new setting will be saved autmatically t the nn-vlatile memry as pwer up default. CAUTION Discharge capacitrs befre making any measurement. Large value capacitrs shuld be discharged thrugh an apprpriate resistance lad. CAUTION Using resistance r cntinuity functin in a live circuit will prduce false results and may damage the meter. In many cases the suspected cmpnent must be discnnected frm the circuit t btain an accurate reading

16 A, ma, A, and %4-20mA Current functins Insert the red test lead int the crrect A/mA r A input jack. Press SELECT buttn mmentarily t select DC, AC, r DC+AC. The new settings will be saved autmatically t the nn-vlatile memry as pwer up default. In DC ma functin, neither in AC nr in DC+AC, press and hld the %4-20mA (~Hz) buttn fr 1 secnd r mre t display the current digital data in terms f lp current percentage (%) value. It is set at 4mA=0%(zer) and 20mA= 100%(span) with 0.01% high reslutin, which virtually extends the meters' capability t test and regulate the externally pwered lp current in the industrial prcess cntrl applicatins. The analg bar-graph remains shwing the ma current value t alert the user. Nte: Nrmal frward vltage drp (frward biased) fr a gd silicn dide is between 0.400V t 0.900V. A reading higher than that indicates a leaky dide (defective). A zer reading indicates a shrted dide (defective). An OL indicates an pen dide (defective). Reverse the test leads cnnectins (reverse baised) acrss the dide. The digital display shws OL if the dide is gd. Any ther readings indicate the dide is resistive r shrted (defective)

17 Warning: When measuring a 3-phase system, special attentin shuld be taken t the phase t phase vltage which is significantly higher than the phase t earth vltage. T avid exceeding the vltage rating f the prtectin fuse(s) accidentally, always cnsider the phase t phase vltage as the wrking vltage fr the prtectin fuse(s). PC-COMM Cmputer interface capabilities The instrument equips with an ptical islated interface prt at the meter back fr data cmmunicatin. Optinal purchase PC interface kit BRUA-85Xa (BC-85Xa RS232C ptical adapter cable + BS85X sftware CD + BUA-2303 USB-t-Serial adaptr) is required t cnnect the meter t the PC cmputer. The BS85x Data Recrding System sftware equips with a digital meter, an analg meter, a cmparatr meter, and a Data Graphical recrder display. T h e L C D annunciatrs "R" and "MAX/MIN turn n. The meter beeps when new maximum r minimum reading is updated. Press the buttn mmentarily t read thrughut the Maximum (MAX), Minimum (MIN), and Maximum minus Minimum (MAX-MIN) readings. Press the buttn fr 1 secnd r mre t exit MAX/MIN recrding mde. Aut Pwer Off feature will be disabled autmatically in this mde. CREST capture (Instantaneus Peak Hld)mde Press CREST buttn mmentarily t activate CREST mde t capture vltage r current signal duratin as shrt as 0.8ms. Intelligent Aut Pwer Off(APO) The Intelligent Aut Pwer Off (APO) mde turns the meter ff autmatically t extend battery life after apprximately 17 minutes f n activities. Activities are specified as: 1) Rtary switch r push buttn peratins, and 2) Significant measuring readings f abve 10% f range r nn- OL readings. In ther wrds, the meter will intelligently avid entering the APO mde when it is under nrmal measurements. T wake up the meter frm APO, press the RECORD buttn mmentarily r turn the rtary switch t the OFF psitin and then turn back n again. Always turn the rtary switch t the OFF psitin when the meter is nt in use. Disabling Aut Pwer Off Press the RANGE buttn while turning the meter n t disable the Aut Pwer Off (APO) feature. Truble Shting If the instrument fails t perate, check battery, fuses, leads, etc., and replace as necessary. Duble check perating prcedure as described in this user's manual. If the instrument vltageresistance input terminal has subjected t high vltage transient (caused by lighting r switching surge t the system) by accident r abnrmal cnditins f peratin, the series fusible resistrs will be blwn ff (becme high impedance) like fuses t prtect the user and the instrument. Mst 32 measuring functins thrugh this terminal will then be pen circuit. The series fusible resistrs and the spark gaps shuld then be replaced by qualified technician. Lift the end f the case bttm nearest the input jacks until it unsnaps frm the case tp. Replace the blwn fuse(s) and /r the battery. Replace the case bttm, and ensure that all the gaskets are prperly seated and the tw snaps n the case tp (near the LCD side) are engaged. Re-fasten the screws. This Test Certificate warrantees that the prduct has been inspected and tested in accrdance with the published specificatins.
