Water quality sampling 41 days ( ) Total Suspended Solids, Pigments, Spectral absorption of CDOM, Detritus, phytoplankton Absorption budget 440 nm TSS [ ] g m -3 Chlorophyll-a [ ] mg m -3 CDOM 443 nm [ ] m -1 Sample collection times optimized for satellite match-ups Filtration Townsville Lab Shipment CDOM, TSS overnight Hobart, pigments and particulate absorption twice a year (Analysis Clementson L., Blondeau-Patissier D.)

Auxiliary data Met station & pressure transducer Monthly aggregation of: Barometric pressure Relative humidity Air temperature Wind speed, direction Wave height Water temperature (Analysis Boadle D., Suber K.)

Performance Indicator Data Availability Example WQM (Analysis Y. Qin)

WQM daily variability 1 April 2014 QA/QC-ing & NetCDF conversion not through IMOS toolbox python scripting Linux All DAPCS data back-processed to 2009 (Analysis Y. Qin)

Tidal impact on discrete measurements Example absorption of detritus (Analysis D. Blondeau-Patissier)

Passive monitoring and detection of organic pollutants Supporting Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Started March 2014) National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology (Entox) UQ

Update on bio-optics at NRS sites (ANMN) EcoTriplet deployment & analysis WQM analysis site specific regression against HPLC (update from Lesley on Friday) 2015/16 (~20% cut)

Bio-optics at NRS sites EcoTriplet deployments Project change over Focus on maintaining deployments Rottnest Is 2. Port Hacking 3. Maria Is 4. Stradbroke Is 5. Yongala Data analysis started Re-evaluation (Deployment management B. Baker)

Yongala (AIMS) // // Yongala only EcoT at surface 2011 WG recommendation evaluation of satellite products All other sites at 20 m depth co-located with WQMs (Image credit AIMS)

Port Hacking time series no QA/QC (Analysis N. Cherukuru, B. Baker)

Physical Parameter = Scale Factor (Output Dark Counts) Problem Output at times lower than Dark Counts (DC s) (a) using factory calibration (b) Pre- post lab DC measurements Predominantly CDOM and at times 532 nm channel Not site specific Not correlated with ocean colour observations Proposed analysis Detailed lab reassessment of DC behaviour Discovery Dark counts strongly depend on power setup (Image credit B. Baker)

EcoTriplet Dark Count Re-assessment Grounding of externally powered instruments reduced DCs and standard deviation significantly Up to 30% difference between grounded and nongrounded measurements and to factory calibrations Ungrounded-Grounded alternating 532 nm // Reduction is instrument-specific No significant temperature dependence 5-35 C (Analysis B. Baker)

EcoTriplets cont. Re-processing using revised DCs did not lead to major improvement for CDOM and 532 nm. Some periods could be adjusted by a simple bias correction Need in-situ sampling of CDOM (a) quantify seasonal absorption ranges, (b) to establish concentration to absorption conversion via scaling factors. Manufacturer provided calibration information remains insufficient. More frequent (pre-deployement) SF assessments CDOM using QSD, backscattering polystyrene beads incl. revised DCs method. Needs additional resources project extension or incorporation into Calibration Facility (to be discussed)

Updates on IMOS Ocean Colour (OC) DALEC - Continuous above-water radiometry (J. Lovell, D. Boadle, in collaboration with AIMS) Bio-Optical Data Base (L. Clementson, K. Paige) Production and Validation of Ocean Colour (E. King, R. Scott, K. Suber, J. Lovell) ~20% cut but larger carry forward to buffer reduced funding in 2015/16 and 2016/17(?)

DALEC Continuous above-water radiometry In collaboration with AIMS now a success 3 x Zeiss MMS1 UV-VIS NIR 10 nm spectral resolution 16 bit ADC NIST traceable calibration nm Manufacturer: In-situ Marine Optics, Australia

DALEC - Continuous above-water radiometry QA/QC-ed since 2011 higher level processing completed (Analysis J. Lovell)

DALEC - Continuous above-water radiometry Satellite match-ups MODIS and VIIRS 24 May 2015 Beagle Gulf (Analysis J. Lovell)

DALEC - Continuous above-water radiometry Satellite match-ups MODIS and VIIRS 24 May 2015 Beagle Gulf (Analysis J. Lovell)

Chlorophyll-a retrieval using DALEC reflectance Southern Surveyor 21 Aug 11 Sep 2011 off WA using OC3 algorithm (Analysis J. Lovell)

Chlorophyll-a retrieval using DALEC reflectance Southern Surveyor 21 Aug 11 Sep 2011 off WA using OC3 algorithm + MODIS overlay (Analysis J. Lovell)

New National Marine Facility delivered Sep 2014 Not an ideal platform for the DALEC No support by MNF to operate the DALEC maintenance overhead too high Vessel structure impacting on radiometry (irradiance) 2015/16 Solander only allocation provided to AIMS to support deployments

IMOS Bio-Optical Data Base Continued acquisition of bio-optical data from the Australian research community into the IMOS bio-optical data base and data provision to NASA (SeaBASS) and ESA (Mermaid) as well as ESA s Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative (OC-CCI). Focus 2015/16 Inclusion of AIMS & JCU GBR data sets Data updates to SeaBASS (Jan-June 2014) (L. Clementson, K. Paige)

Production and Validation of Ocean Colour Continued production of daily standard ocean colour products from MODIS-Aqua and VIIRS. Whole-of-mission temporal coverage for Australasian region. Re-processing of entire MODIS archive using latest NASA provided calibrations completed. Data transferred to IMOS portal and directly available to OceanCurrent. Production of standard ocean colour from historic SeaWiFS mission ( ) completed. Data is being checked and formatting organised for transfer to the IMOS portal.

Production and Validation of Ocean Colour New in 2015/16 Sub-Facility annual validation reports Based on Bio-Optical Data Base match-up analysis Provision of extracted satellite data & associated match-ups Possible ocean colour time series from virtual buoys (Image credit J. Lovell)

International uptake/context ESA/EUMETSAT Sentinel-3 Validation Team IOCCG Working Group - Atmospheric Correction Inter-comparison JAXA collaboration evaluation of geostationary satellite data SeaBASS (NASA), Mermaid (ESA) data inclusion cont. Inclusion into AERONET-OC (NASA) cont. NOAA cal/val of VIIRS
