1 The QSX Newsletter Nov Volume 51, Issue 11 Calendar of Events: Nov. 11, 2010 General meeting, 7:30 pm. Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1801 Verdugo Blvd. Montrose, Ca NOVEMBER 10: PREZ SEZ Time for Some Juicy Morsels as a Prelude to (your) Thanksgiving Feast and Our Holiday Party!! South Pole & PAC-12: The October meeting was the success that was predicted. Erik, KO6OL gave a great talk, mentally accessible even to nonastronomers. Jason and Mike distributed nearly all of the PAC-12 Antenna Kits that they and Russell created. Great Job. Calendar: Remember our membership meeting on Veterans Day, the 11th at the usual place. Eric from HRO will be featured as he is every year, tempting us with the new toys of the year. There should also be a GEARS meeting at the EOC on the 17th at Montrose Holiday Parade is first Saturday of December, the 4th, and volunteer communicators are needed. Contact Joe Pardo, j here@ca.rr.com, or Joe Wilke, jwilke@ci.glendale.ca.us 1 Holiday Annual Party: Thursday, December 9 at the Church, probably around 7:00-7:30. Start thinking about some modest (under ten bucks) but desirable item to bring for the yearly whacko auction. Pot Luck contributions: If the first letter after your call sign 6 or 7 designator is A-H, please bring a (maybe hot) Side Dish accompaniment to the Club's turkey and ham; if the first letter is I thru P bring a Dessert; if Q thru Zed bring a Salad. Also bring non-alcoholic beverages for yourself and to share. BTW new "Conrad's" owner Peter will provide a cooked bird for us as in past years. PAC-12 News: Now how to use the PAC-12? Joe used Prez antenna and 20m coil for Boy Scout JOTA and reportedly had good success, with a 100W rig. Mike has an MFJ 20m single-bander that he s used successfully with his antenna. The MFJ puts out approximately 20W. We re still thinking of having QRP or maybe just PAC-12s in the Park, maybe a Saturday lunch event at Deuk, along with some pizza. A Low-Power Portable Linear? I like the idea of a portable station, so I bought a well-used 817 from which I ve yet to make an HF contact, but I m looking ahead to next Field Day and think I d like more power than 5W, so I ve been searching for

2 small modest-power but not QRP linear amps. Hard to find. Nothing great in QST or the Handbook that I found. VOILA: found a site called hfprojects dot com. They recently sold out of a $250 kit, 3x3x5 inches if I remember correctly, that puts out up to 35W. The inventor is taking sign-ups for the new v.4 edition and I signed up as #13 but don t know how many signups are needed before it s worthwhile to re-issue. Maybe this appeals to you, too. Check it out. Also, by Googling FT-817 accessories you will be led to several sites about the FT and other issues & gear, like batteries, solar chargers etc. that relate to portable operation. Officer Elections: Remember, under The New Regime, nominations will be held at the January meeting, Elections and Installations at the February 2011 meeting, and then it s four (4) meetings til Field Day. In 2011 we won t have to figure everything out for the first time, and we ve asked for the 2011 reservation for the Park, thru Gears, from the City. They Aren t Golden Parachutes, But They Are Nets: Ed, TAV encourages your call-in on the 440 Rptr Sundays between 1950 and 2000 hours, for the No Chit- Chat Net and then stick around for the What s Goin On? Net on 2m immediately thereafter. Ed s nets have lasted up to an hour, sometimes more, and it s our duty to keep him on the air for the maximum possible time. The 2m net features our club Meteorologist Bob, WXH delivering the weekly Weather Report from Hell (i.e. Bob s garage shack) a perfect example of generating schadenfreude (the perfect German concept, of course, which is the guilty pleasure at the misfortunes of others), in knowing that no matter what it is, the weather is always worse at Bob s place. Hope to CU at the meeting. 73, Mark, KF6YAN. Transponder Net news: We had an excellent turnout for the November Transponder Net despite the fact that the UK had already turned their clocks back while we had yet to do it in the U.S. Because of that, our UK 2 participants joined in at 4:15PM rather than the usual 5:15PM time. For a change our technical difficulties were on the digital side and not the analog and RF side. In the U.S. we were slightly hampered by packet loss - a new difficulty for us - possibly due to some strain on the internet gateway for the GB3NS repeater. While there were 2 and 3 second dropouts, we were able to get the gist of the communication and hope that it will not be an issue on future nets. Special thanks goes out to Mark Kanzler (KE6ZRP) for noticing that his node radio had a problem and making a rushed trip to his office (where the radio and link exist) and replacing the radio. Our problems on previous nets were due to an intermittent CTCSS board in his radio. The CVRC Repeaters put out a Hz CTCSS signal (to help mute out other co-channeled repeaters on the same pairs). The receiver was capturing the received signal from the repeater and then losing it as the CTCSS board warmed up. Now we know! Participants included: U.S. AD6IZ/M KE6ZRP/M K6POI W6MW/8 U.K. G8JAC G3ZMF KL7UK Echolink) M0JXN G4WYJ Larry Mark (Motorcycle Mobile) Tim (via Echolink) Mark (via Echolink) Andy Frank Laurence (from Oklahoma via Paul (via Echolink) Jim Jim had just returned from a trip to the Los Angeles area to visit the San Bernadino Microwave Society. He dropped into Ham Radio Outlet in Burbank and had the sales manager, Eric call me from there just to say "hello". Unfortunately I was at a doctor's appointment and missed the call, but we wish that Jim had been able to attend a CVRC meeting or join some Club

3 Members for a meal. CVRC extends an invitation to all CATS members: Give us plenty of notice and we will arrange a chance to get together while you are in the LA area. Our meetings are on the Second Thursday of every month (except August) at 7:30PM. Please join us! Our next Net will be on the first Saturday in December at 9:15AM Los Angeles Time and 17:15 in the UK. 73 de Mark W6MW Guest Speaker: We have Eric Christensen, Mister HRO, confirmed as our speaker at the next General Meeting, Thursday the 11th of November. Everybody knows Eric, so I don't need to list his credits here. He'll be showing us the many new toys that we might want to have under our trees for the Holidays... all too quickly approaching. Aaaaaand, please join us at Fratelli's, just down the block, for a no-host dinner with the star of the show before the show starts... say, around 5:45p. Please feel free to join us even if you're only planning to have desert or coffee with us. Should be good!! See ya there, Ray, AD6RJ, Speaker Chair and Tim, K6POI, Assistant Speaker Wrangler 73, Tim, K6POI W1AW 2010/2011 Winter Operating Schedule: from W1AW Bulletin via the ARRL on November 8, 2010 Website: Add a comment about this article!
