1 The QSX Newsletter May Volume 53, Issue 5 General Club Meeting (Second Thursday of the month): Thursday, May 10, :30 PM Verdugo Hills Hospital 4th Floor, Council Room D 1801 N. Verdugo Blvd. Montrose, CA PREZ SEZ MAY 2012 Club Breakfast (First Saturday of the Month): Saturday, May 5, :30 AM Conrad s Restaurant 820 North Central Ave. Glendale, CA Mike KXG was given the OK to purchase a club G5RV for field day. What s best about this is that we now can get on the air anywhere there s a tree well, actually two trees, or a pole or light standard (remember Deuk Park?). We hear that Mark ZRP is mending nicely, which is a relief, and that Bill IMH once again will be issuing the QSX that you re reading. Hello Field Day [Prep] The Glendale gears of G.E.A.R.S. finally are turning, and, thanks to Larry IZ, our Field Day park permit is in the works. We had a spirited discussion about 6-meter antennas at the last meeting. With a bit of luck we can hang David TD s copper pipe halo. For 2m and 440 we may have only a James Pole. No problems with spare generators and the solar array will be available. Again, we might experiment with NVIS on 40m. Please try to come to the next three or four meetings where we will update and finalize the equipment lists, assignments and so forth as we approach June 23 and 24 FD. Other activities as Bill IMH may have up his sleeve, like a video; see elsewhere for the latest menu. Most of all, remember our much loved colleagues and friends, Frances EAQ and Walt NYW, in your prayers. May is upon us. CU then. 73 de Mark YAN

And, concurrent with hands-on Anderson Powerpole activities: Jason "CW Guy" Sogolow, W6IEE Separate discussion of new CW net. w6iee.blogspot.com (And, as time permits): Tim Wheeler, K6POI and Ray Jurgens, AD6RJ No antennas here do you see any antennas we don't got no antennas we don't got to show you no stinkin'antennas. Drop In, Speak Up, Show Off "Amateur" means a person who does something for the love of it. Show us what part of amateur radio you love. Drop In, Speak Up, Show Off Here's your chance to have part of your fifteen minutes of fame.

3 From Ray AD6RJ, Barb and I put the 15m Reflected M beam up today just in time to hear the Js pounding in trying to work the Mich QSO party. What a difference from using the 40m dipole (about 40 db). I'll run a pattern test tomorrow if Mike is available. It would be nice to find someone located within line of sight of my back yard. There are some places located in the hills around me that are. I still need some help with measuring and making guy lines, finishing portable bases for each mast, and taking down antennas once they are tested so that someone other than me knows how to assemble these and check them out. We also have to match masts with whatever we use for VHF and UHF antennas for each polarization. Also, are we going to be prepared to operate on 10m? Ray From Jason Sogolow, W6IEE: Here is a question I d like to pose to the group: Who would be interested in a (super-slow, at first) slow speed CW net? Perhaps Sunday evening, before the other nets? Not for the purpose of conveying any real information, just for fun with CW. The next big question would be, where, frequency-wise to hold it. A few of us have transceivers that would permit holding it on 2 meters, somewhere in the vicinity of High gain antennas are small/cheap/easily fabricated. This would be the best option, as any license class has access to the band, but the hardware is surely the limiting factor. 6M might be worth a try, but probably super noisey. Worth investigating. Another option might be 10 meters, anyone with a HF transceiver built within my lifetime surely has 10 meters. Antenna would be a wire dipole, or a vertical. I d suggest we standardize on a polarization, just to be able to hear everybody. Lastly, 17 meters, as I d just like to build an antenna for that band. ;) (wire dipole too.) What does everyone think? Thanks and 73, Jason W6IEE. Meeting Presenters Wanted For: Curing RFI problems. Grounding HAM stations. Any other HAM topic you can imagine. (Share your expertise for minutes.) Please contact Bill Jeffrey, KE6IMH, Bill-J@pacbell.net, (818)

5 My brain had experienced too many wash and rinse cycles for the day, so I never received a satisfactory definition for the term, "Dirty Old Man", from the parishioners I interviewed. As I left the group, I felt paralyzed by the many questions that continued to haunt me... O.M. What does it mean to be called... an "Old Man"? Is it a title of honor... an acknowledgement of noble stature... or could it express a covert scorn on the part of the speaker? A "Reasonable Person" (a frequent measure of Propriety in situations like this) might take offense to being called an "Old Man". How old would a person have to be to qualify for "Old Man" status?... and how could you possibly define a "man" for this context?? After a dutiful study of a group of "Old Men"... here's what I've learned... Men and women... boys and girls of ALL AGES can become "Old Men"... WHAT!!!???... something difficult to wrap your arms around??? I guess so!! I witnessed an eleven-year old boy pass a 35- question, multiple choice exam to become an "Old Man" right on the spot!! By "Dirty Old Man" did they mean an Unwashed HAM Operator (male or female, I suppose!) or something more sinister? DOMs could be, they admitted, unreasonable critters and, therefore, deserved to be watched even though they were difficult to identify! Well, think about it... they weren't licensed, they didn't wear badges declaring their DOM-ness... and there wasn't a professionalizing study course to become a DOM!!! So, at the end the day... all I had was this... There is a secret society where everyone is an "Old Man"... where it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between the O.M.s, the UHOs and the DOMs... and, worse yet, between the elevenyear olds and the women!! OOohhh, we've got trouble, my friends! Trouble with capital "T", that rhymes with "D", and stands for DIRTY!!! Don't say I didn't warn ya... Stay Happy, Tim K6POI Even more surprising... I discovered that... Women were becoming "Old Men"... in increasing numbers!! Nnnnnnooooooooo!!!!! What kind of subversive cult was this?? And, not only were there Old Men... there were "Dirty Old Men". I wasn't going to be able to uncover more inner sanctum truths of this mystical society beyond this point unless I took the test myself!!
