The Active Denial System, also referred to as the "ADS," is a nonlethal, counter-personnel, directed-energy weapon. It projects a focused beam of millimetre waves to induce an intolerable heating sensation on an adversary's skin, repelling the individual with minimal risk of injury. There is only a minimal risk of injury because of the shallow penetration depth of the energy into the skin at this short wavelength, the safety features designed into the system, and normal instinctive reactions. Final selection for the Dynamic Demonstration Display will take place at the end of June. "We are very enthusiastic about the capability and military utility that this advanced technology provides," said Brian D. Long, ADS Project Manager, U.S DoD Non-Lethal Weapons Program. "Because of the extended range and powerful effect, this technology aids in determining intent and can aid in reducing uncertainty when dealing with any number of escalation-of-force scenarios that might exist in convoy operations, entry control points and dealing with potentially hostile crowds. In these type of situations, this capability greatly reduces the possibility of unnecessary civilian casualties and protects friendly forces from risk." Long, who has volunteered to experience the ADS first-hand added, "I have experienced the ADS numerous times - the repel effect is rapid and safe." The ADS produces millimetre waves at a frequency of 95 GHz and uses an antenna to direct a focused, invisble beam toward a designated subject. Travelling at the speed of light, the energy strikes the subject and reaches a skin depth of only about 1/64th of an inch, or the equivalent of three sheets of paper. It produces a heat sensation that within seconds becomes intolerable and forces the targeted individual to instinctively move. The sensation immediately ceases when the individual moves out of the beam or when the operator turns off the beam. The ADS incorporates computer systems (hardware and software) that limit shot duration and beam power to achieve a safe and effective non-lethal repel effect. Of the more than 11,000 documented ADS exposures and more than a decade of human effects testing, the ADS has proven that the system involves only a 1/10th of 1 percent chance of injury. Non-Lethal Capabilities Showcased The Non-Lethal Capabilities to be showcased at the 2011 NATD are expected to fall into the following categories: pyrotechnics blunt force weapons irritants, irritant delivery systems energy weapons loudhailers lights lasers personnel dispersion systems personnel restraining systems vehicle arresting systems combination platforms and control systems. The basic static display booth will be available for a fee of $400 ($500 if registered after June 30, 2011) plus 13% tax. Day 3 27 Oct 11 - Table Top Exhibit at the Connaught Ranges There will be a heated tent near the Dynamic Demonstration ranges that will house static table top exhibits (8 X 6 area with a 6 table, 2 chairs and 110 V AC). These exhibit booths will be available for a fee of $160 plus 13% tax. Only 50 booths are available. There will also be an outside exhibition area, for display of vehicles and vehicle mounted systems, included with the payment of the $160 fee plus 13% tax. 4 Page 4 of 5 Day 3 27 Oct 11 - Dynamic Demonstration at the Connaught Ranges On Thursday October 27, Day 3 of the 2011 NATD - a Dynamic Demonstration will be hosted from 0900 to 2100 hrs at the Connaught Ranges, in the Shirley s Bay district of Ottawa. The day will consist of short vignettes, demonstrations and familiarization sessions as well as a static display area. The vignettes will employ company provided Non-Lethal Capabilities in dramatisations to help audience members understand how respective Non-Lethal Capabilities can be applied to practical ISAF operational settings; please see the NATD website for a list of the proposed vignettes. click here. Each vignette will be followed by exhibitor led demonstrations showcasing and explaining product capabilities. Hands-on familiarization sessions will allow cleared visitors access to use selected Non-Lethal Systems. Companies with mature or soon-to-be fielded technologies will be chosen from the list of applicants for participation and will be assigned a time slot and possibly a related vignette. Due to time constraints and other considerations, approximately 30 companies will be able to participate in the Dynamic Demonstration and a small number of exhibitors will participate in the vignettes.
