1 Thru The Lens Our website August 2011 Newsletter Hello All, Coming up next month is our annual Parklands/Preston inter-club competition. Our club s images were selected at the last Mini Meet. We always try to submit a range of photos from across our members to represent our club. Even if your image is not selected, I d encourage everyone who can to come along on the night. It s a chance to see what another club is up to and a great night out. And a BIG THANKYOU to all members who their photos in for the newsletter the system is working really well. 7 Club events Mini Workshop August 23 rd Come along to learn more about using your tripod and other aspects of photography. Every member is invited to bring along a print that they love to display to the club and provide a little back-story, or explain what appeals to them at the library, as usual. Event Weekend Away Aug 25/26 Please contact Joe (hatemondays@netscape.net) regarding whether you wish to join us for our weekend workshop. The weekend will be August 25/26th and the location is Taggerty. At this stage, it is likely to be near Healesville. Parking is available in the staff car park or on the street Club Meeting 13th September Next month s meeting is on Thurs 13th September, 7:30 in the library as usual. The theme is After Dark. 11 When: Now 16 September Where: NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Competition - Melbourne My Beautiful City Take a striking, original and inspirational image of Melbourne and you could be one of three photographers to win a three-day trip and cultural exchange to our Russian sister city in November 2012 for the exhibition launch. The Melbourne My Beautiful City photography exhibition is organised by the St Petersburg Centre for Information and Trade in Melbourne and supported by the City of Melbourne, Arts Victoria and the Government of St Petersburg. Entries close 25 August. Visit for more details and entry forms. Competition Take a Bow A performance photography competition, presented by the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. Includes dance, theatre, music and all types of performance, competition divided into Youth and Open sections. When: Competition closes 23 September; a free exhibition including the competition image finalists, images from the judge Jeff Busby and others, and demonstrations of how to shoot performances runs October. Where: Ballarat Mechanics Institute, 117 Sturt Street, Ballarat, Competition Snapped: Melbourne in a Moment Competition for photos taken within the City of Melbourne boundaries, that capture the city at a particular moment in time. Prizes for two divisions under and over 18 years old. There will also be a People s Choice Award via Facebook. 12 Event - Photography Night Walks in Melbourne city. These creatively-focused walking tours offer locals and visitors the opportunity to explore the city at night and learn about night-time photography at the same time. The walks are held every Thursday 7pm pm and Sunday 6pm pm in Melbourne. Every Thursday the group convenes for a post-walk drink and discussion to view the evening s work projected on a large digital screen at local venues. Most walks only $20! Leigh-Anne tried them out a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Let s discuss (again): Photo editing software OK, so I thought last month that it would be interesting to find out a bit more about what photo editing software everyone uses but I forgot to put the discussion topic up on Flickr! Ahem. So, let s try this one again What kind of photo editing software do you use, and what kinds of changes do you make? There are many different packages available. Photoshop or its cheaper but very capable cousin Photoshop Elements used to be standard, but more recently Adobe Lightroom has become more and more popular as a program designed specifically for processing photographic images. There s also iphoto and Corel PaintShop Pro, and some great free programs available too, like Gimp and FastStone. So what do you use? Let us know on the club s Flickr discussion board (

13 I ll go first with what I meant to post last month on Flickr At the moment, I import all my photos into iphoto (I use a Mac) and use that for cataloguing, then do all my edits in Photoshop Elements (an old one version 6). However, Apple as is their wont have just made the new version of iphoto incompatible with my computer, so I m going to have to change one or the other at some stage. I ve been hearing more and more about Lightroom, and have been feeling like I should switch over, and so the need to update my aged version of iphoto for something more stable might be the final push I need to make the move. I imagine that the combination of Lightroom and Elements would be fantastic I m a huge fan of Elements, which I think is fantastic value compared to full-price Photoshop. One day I will learn to use more of what it can do! You? See you on Flickr! Member profile: Katriona Fahey I have been interested in photography for a long time. I guess my interest started with travel and wanting to record my visual response to what I saw. I have been a member of Parklands since I am not normally a club sort of person but I do enjoy getting together with others who share my interest in photography. I think having a competition theme to shoot every month makes me take photos, and I love seeing other people s responses to the topic. Finally, and probably most importantly, the club is welcoming and the members are great. I feel an inbuilt need to capture the moment, such as the cat sitting quite happily in the pantry cupboard, or standing at the birdbath drinking. I do often look for the abstract element in things around me, mostly in the man-made environment. I am still a bit of a novice with post processing so I would like to become more proficient with that. I use Photoshop Elements, but would like to try Lightroom when I find the time. Henri Cartier- Bresson is probably my favourite photographer for his ability to capture the moment, and I can't go past Olive Cotton s magic Tea cup ballet ( for its use of pattern, light and shade.

Wonderful travel photography images in the round-up of the National Geographic Traveler magazine annual photo competition. Missing the Olympics? Have a look at The Guardian newspaper s picks for their top 10 images from the Games. Our August judge Brian talked a lot about off-camera lighting if you re interesting in finding out more, here s a site that has a huge amount of info. Photographer of the month Peter Dombrovskis Peter Dombrovskis ( ) was an Australian landscape photographer, known particularly for his images of the Tasmanian wilderness. His stunning images of remote and little-known locations in Tasmania were important in raising environmental awareness, especially in the 1980s. In 2003, Dombrovskis was the first Australian to be inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.
