2 Updates and Ideas Just Released: Focus on Colour! Learn Colour Theory and How to Paint These Projects in Genesis or Oils! Are You an Oil Teacher? Second chance!!! We are adding to our website a listing of teachers who currently teach in either Genesis or traditional oils. Would you like to listed? Send us via your information including contact information, teaching location and qualifications. The list will be updated quarterly. We are constantly asked Who teaches oils in my area? and this will give the answer. We will have a separate listings for Kingslan Accredited Teachers and Genesis Authorized Artisans. Help us spread the word as to who teaches where! We will only list those who submit so don t delay! Our address is: painting@kingslan.com [Abstract art is] a product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered. Al Capp ( )
3 Tips and Techniques What is the new Genesis Glazing Gel? The new Glazing Gel is a great product! When you used the Glazing Medium, you had to respect a 40%-60% ratio extender to paint otherwise the paint would not dry. The new Gel eliminates this problem. The traditional oil painter can now lay down a film of extender and work paint into that layer. We have taken it a step father and created our own set of Permasols (Glazing Oils). How? On your palette mix Gel and paint about half and half. Put the mix in a Genesis jar and mark it as a glazing colour. Suggested colours to create glazing mixes are: Ultramarine Blue, Genesis Yellow, Black, Raw Sienna, Quinacradone Crimson, Diarylide Yellow and Genesis Red. Now you have your own set of glazing colours. Can you use your traditional oil brushes with Genesis? You may use your oil painting brushes with Genesis. Just be sure to wash them out throughly with a degreaser-type soap such as Dawn Dishwashing Liquid. Dry and the brushes are ready to go. How do you convert a design written in oils to Genesis? Just about everything remains same except for the names of the colours and the drying procedure. Bobby and Neal Pearcy s TSC book does a great job of converting colours either through a visual reference or by name. ( We use just seven colours so the conversion is easy: Cad Yellow is Genesis Yellow, Cad Red is Genesis Red, Alizarin Crimson is Quin Crimson. The rest of the colours share the same name. Oils dry through oxidization and can take up to two years to chemically dry. Genesis paints chemically dry in 3-5 minutes depending on the thickness of the paint and the surface. Inspirational Thoughts for the Month Painting is an attempt to come to terms with life. There are as many solutions as there are human beings. George Tooker Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. Henry Ward Beecher ( ), Proverbs from Plymouth Pulpit, 1887 To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. Joseph Chilton Pearce Creativity is...seeing something that doesn t exist already. You need to find out how you can bring it into being and that way be a playmate with God. Michele Shea I passionately hate the idea of being with it, I think an artist has always to be out of step with his time. Orson Welles ( ) Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. Pablo Picasso ( ) Painting is just another way of keeping a diary. Pablo Picasso ( ) There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun. Pablo Picasso ( ) Art is either plagiarism or revolution. Paul Gauguin ( )

5 Kingslan & Gibilisco Decorative Arts Updated Seminar Information Seminar Philosophy and Content Each seminar is patterned after the Old World Art Academies. The student learns the academic principles and techniques by duplicating the work of the Teacher/Master. The studies or projects are formulated to stress a particular area of study and all teaching and painting is directed toward that end. The student may work in traditional oils, acrylics, or Genesis heat set oils. Ann and Mary teach using traditional oil methods with the Genesis paints. Our Omaha, Nebraska Professional Studio The only prerequisite to study with Ann and Mary is a desire to increase your knowledge and painting skills. While the Decorative Art Level Teaching Seminars are directed toward those wishing to learn how to teach or to improve their teaching methods, it is also excellent for students who wish to learn the Ann Kingslan Method from the very beginning. We are the only studio that can grant students the title of Genesis Authorized Artisan. Take any of our 3-5 day seminars and you will be an Authorized Artisan. Lodging and Meals Our students are housed at newly remodeled hotel, The Park Inn, which is directly across the parking lot from our decorative art studio. Our students receive a highly discounted rate of $70 per night. The hotel has a complimentary breakfast while we provide a full lunch each day. There are several restaurants and shops within walking distance for your evening meal. How Do I Get to the Omaha Seminars? The seminar studio and hotel is right off Interstate I-680. If you fly into Omaha, there is a low cost shuttle between the hotel and airport. Omaha boasts excellent airfare rates due to the central location and airlines such as Midwest Express and Southwest. All airlines fly into Omaha. Studio Our professional studio is ideal for the seminar student. Each student has onehalf of a 5 foot table. The lighting is excellent! Ann and Mary have 90 of their decorative art adorning every available surface. We have added a video monitor system to our studio. Now there truly is no bad seat. The two 25 monitors are positioned at 7 feet above the floor on opposite ends of the studio teaching room. We are able to zoom in on small areas so now the student misses nothing! Our students could not be more excited or appreciative. Sign Me Up! 10 Kingslan & Gibilisco Correspondence Courses Which seminars are available through correspondence? At the present time, the Decorative Art Levels I, II and III and the Dutch Old Master Series are currently available as correspondence courses. Others may be added in the future. The Decorative Art courses may be taken out of order but this is not advised. Is there a time limit on when the course must be completed? There is no time limit. How is the student evaluated? The student receives manuals, photos and colour match swatches. The student paints the study pieces to the best of his or her ability. Then pieces are mailed back and are then carefully evaluated by Ann and Mary. A complete written critique is sent to the student. If necessary, the student adjusts the pieces and then sends them back to Ann and Mary. A final evaluation is completed and the pieces are returned to the student. What are the benefits on these courses? Upon completion of the courses, you will be a knowledgable, fully Accredited Ann Kingslan Instructor. This entitles you to additional discounts on wholesale orders, completion certificates, newsletters, and recommendation of your teaching services. What is the cost of each course? The cost of each Decorative Art course is $275 and the Dutch Old Master Series is $200 (US Dollars). The student pays the shipping to Ann and Mary. Ann and Mary pay the shipping back to the student in the United States. Due to the high cost of shipping to Japan the cost of the course is $375 for the Decorative Art Series. What is the cost of the wood surfaces? The wood surfaces are approximately $60-$80 (plus shipping) per course and will be delivered directly to the student. The student may order this wood from Kingslan & Gibilisco Seminars or may provide their own wood. How do I sign up? Apply two coats of paint using a fine pore roller brush or a soft bristle brush. When this coat of paint is warm to the touch, it is dry enough to give it a final sanding. Apply the final coat of paint as follows: In order to achieve the desired eggshell finish, use the roller brush for the final coat. Fill the roller with paint by moving it back and forth through the edges of the puddle of paint on the palette. Do not overfill the roller. Roll in all directions without lifting the roller. Continue to roll in all directions until the surface feels dry or you begin to feel resistance. This step is important! If you see any bubbles in the paint, continue to roll. Pick out any impurities immediately! Do not allow them to dry into the surface. For best results, a painted surface should cure for three to four hours, preferably overnight. The surface may be lightly buffed with a piece of a brown paper grocery sack. If it still feels rough, use 220 grit sandpaper. Always wipe with the tack cloth after sanding. Mixing Formulas Formulae for mixing is given throughout this lesson. You will find that the mixes for the hue are given first. This is followed by a colour that will raise or lower the value. Once the value and colour are mixed, the next addition usually is meant to either brighten or dull the colour. Finally, a colour may need to be mixed into the pile that will adjust the temperature. Stage One Enamel Bread Box Rims Paint the rims with Black. Highlight where indicated on the Value Placement chart with Light mix. The light source is from the upper right, slightly in front. The light areas will be on the right and above the center line. The dark areas will be on the left and become gradually darker as the object recedes from the light.
