The evening of Thursday 3/16 and the afternoon of Friday 3/17, teachers will meet with parents to discuss your child s progress. Sign-ups for appointments will be sent home on 3/2. Every Tuesday in March, Not Your Average Joe's is hosting a Dine Out night for Butler families, 15% of your bill will be donated to the ASA. And here s another reason to head out with the family, on Thursday 3/30 the Chateau will host a Family Dine Out with 20% of your bill donated to the ASA. Friday 3/10, we will have an assembly for the National Grid Fundraiser Kick off; flyers will be going home. Our school receives 100% of the profits with this energy saving fundraiser; items available for purchase include light bulbs, surge protectors, and lamps. Lifetouch Pictures will be here on Wednesday 3/29 for Spring Pictures. Grade 5 and 6 students are invited to a Spring Dance hosted by the ASA on Friday 3/31. Information will be sent home with students in the coming weeks. AMHS Student members of SALSA will visit Gr 5 & 6 classrooms on 3/30, to discuss making healthy life choices. ASA will meet on Wednesday 3/1 at 7:00 p.m., this month s meeting is in the Library of AMHS. The Annual Scholastic Book Fair will be held 3/15-3/20. -Mr. Reynolds Butler Bulletin 1

2 Family Fitness Fun Swimming! Family Fitness Fun Physical activity is essential for our health and happiness. It is also great for family togetherness. Each month please check out the Family Fitness Fun section of the newsletter for another way to get your family moving and having fun! Many don t think of swimming as a form of physical activity during the winter months, but if you have access to an indoor pool the health benefits of swimming are unmatched by almost any other sport! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), swimming is the second most popular sport activity in the United States. Swimming is not only fun, it provides many benefits: Aerobic exercise with muscular toning and strengthening swimming works the entire body, including the cardiovascular system, without putting increased stress on the body s skeletal system, joints and muscles. Helps people with chronic illnesses regular water based exercise can have a positive effect on those who suffer from arthritis, asthma, heart disease and diabetes. Swimming helps joints and ligaments stay loose and flexible, increases lung volume, strengthens the heart and burns calories. Improves mental health exercise helps release feel-good chemicals in the brain called endorphins. The stretching and flexing of the muscles used while swimming can help the body relax, which in turn, can assist in decreasing anxiety and depression. Appropriate for all ages kids love spending time in the pool, but swimming isn t just for children. Adults (young and old) who regularly swim are healthier than those who live a sedentary life. The Avon Public Schools are a proud member of the NRC and it always puts together excellent programs. I have included a flyer below for your information. It is free and open to the whole family. 4 Update from Art Teacher Mrs. Costello This year, we are learning the elements of art and how to successfully use them in our work. Throughout the year, your child will learn about the history of artists and artist techniques. In Kindergarten, we have looked at art by Andy Warhol and Piet Mondrian. Warhol, an American born artist, was best known for pop art using bright colors and silk screening images. Mondrian was a Dutch born artist who painted in grids of vertical and horizontal black lines using the three primary colors. We made our own Warhol art using bright color block crayons as our subject matter. We created spider webs using the primary colors to mimic the art of Mondrian. First grade~ We are working on lessons based on the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was a Russian artist and art theorist. We will read the "Noisy paintbox" and will use Wassily's concentric circles for our own color study. Second grade~ We are studying the art of Henri Matisse. He was a French artist known for his paper cuts and "drawing with scissors". We will be recreating his famous "Goldfish" painting. Third grade~ We studied Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter who was best known for the Cubist movement. After studying his art style and portraiture, we created "Picasso Monsters" using construction paper and Picasso's unusual portrait style. Fourth grade~ We just finished our lesson on Salvador Dali, a Spanish artist, who was best known for his melting clocks in many of his landscape paintings. We read "Dali and the Path of Dreams" and used watercolor pencils to make our own Dali inspired dreamlike paintings. Previously we had studied the art of George Seurat, a French artist best known for Butler Bulletin 4

5 creating the technique of pointillism. We used q-tips to "paint" sea creatures the students had drawn. Fifth grade~ We will be studying the work of Edvard Munch, a Norwegian born painter and printmaker. Students will be creating a parody of his famous painting the "Scream". Sixth grade~ We will be studying and recreating the painting "American Gothic" painted by Grant Wood. It is one of the most familiar images in 20th century art and has been widely parodied in American popular culture. Last but not least, we have been going through the alphabet in Pre-K turning each letter into a fun art project. We have been reading funny stories and creating some beautiful masterpieces; whether we are painting, practicing gluing or ripping and cutting paper. During the year, I display student art throughout the school so be sure to stop by during conferences and have a look. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with your kids.
