3 rd Grade Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse French Painter

Henri Émile Benoît Matisse Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 in Nord, France. In 1887 he went to Paris and studied to become a lawyer. He first started to paint in 1889 when his mother gave him paints to keep him busy while he was recovering from appendicitis. He decided that painting was a kind of paradise and he quit being a lawyer in favor of being an artist (much to his fathers dismay).

He went to art school in Paris, painting still lifes and landscapes in traditional style. In 1897, he visited a friend in Brittany who introduced him to Impressionism and the work of Vincent VanGogh (who was unknown then). Matisse s style changed completely after seeing what they were doing. The paintings of this period used flat shapes and controlled lines. Luxembourg Gardens (1901)

In 1905, Matisse joined a group of artists who exhibited paintings which expressed emotion with wild unnatural colors. An art critic dubbed these painters the Fauves which meant wild beasts. The paintings were criticized harshly, and for a while, it was hard for Matisse to make a living as a painter. Woman with a Hat (1905)

Matisse joined a community of artists in Montparnasse (Paris) even though he didn t fit in perfectly with his serious work habits and conservative look. Vase, Bottle and Fruit (1906)

In 1904 he met Pablo Picasso and the two became life-long friends as well as rivals. Both artists liked to paint still lives and women. Portrait of Madame Matisse (1905) One important difference between the two is that Matisse painted from nature, while Picasso painted what he imagined. Self Portrait (1906)

The Red Room (Harmony in Red) (1908)

Odalisque in Red Trousers (1924)

La Chute d Icare (Icarus) (1947)

La Tristesse du Roi (1952) The Sorrows of the King

Henri Matisse Purple Robe Where has the artist decorated shapes? What is the center of interest? Do you like this picture? Why or why not? Print in file

In 1939 he had surgery and afterward used a wheelchair. He started making collages from cut paper, which he called Painting with scissors. Matisse in his studio working on his famous cut-outs The Snail 1953

His final work took 4 years decorating the inside of the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence This is a famous chapel on the French Riviera. Matisse decorated the interior and called it a masterpiece

Project Ideas Have the children make their name with construction paper Using small pieces of construction paper, cut out shapes and arrange Bring in shapes pre-painted into class and let each student in class work as a team to arrange one large piece of work (instructions in notes)

3 rd Grade Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai Was born in October 1760 Lived in Edo, Japan (now know as Toyko) Started painting when he was 6 years old

Katsushika Hokusai When he was 12, his father sent him to work in a bookshop and library He started working as an artist when he was 18 and went to study with other famous artists He liked to change his name a lot he re-named himself at least 30 times! Katsushika Hokusai was not his name when he was born he gave himself this name Katsushika = name of the part of Japan where he was born Hokusai = north studio Self Portrait

He lived to be 89 years old When he was young, he painted prints and wood blocks When he was 40, he started painting landscapes He is still studied today more than 250 years after he died

Hokusai thought his best work was done in his older years When he was 60, he created: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Hodogaya on the Tokaido -a collection of 46 paintings that have now become very famous (he added 10 later) ***Notice Mount Fuji in the background***

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji Some people call this collection the masterpiece of landscape

Landscape with Two Falconers Rainstorm Beneath the Summit

The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai The most famous of his collection is The Great Wave (painted in 1833.) There are copies of this piece of art in many museums.

Some questions Are there people in the scene? Why do you think they are there? Are the waves realistic? What is the FOCAL POINT? What type of MOOD does the picture create?

How did he make this print? These prints were made by carving wooden blocks, then coating them with ink and pressing them onto paper.

Project Ideas Have the children use potato stamps of waves to create their own The Great Wave painting. You cut the potato in half so there is a flat edge, then carve some sort of shape in to it, then you dip it in poster paints, and pressed it against paper. You essentially made a stamp out of a potato. Or use the back of small Styrofoam plates and have the children carve into them with their pencils, apply small amounts of paint and press against paper. Or bring in stamps from the art closet (holiday themed stampers) to create artwork

3 rd Grade Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch Was born in Norway in 1863 Very difficult life As a child and teen, he was sick and often couldn t go to school His mom and sister died when he was young His dad would often read him Edgar Allen Poe (scary stories) Was very poor and often lived in small, rundown apartments

Self Portrait with Brushes 1904 Munch was famous for paintings that focus on emotion Many of his paintings were considered controversial

Expressionism Expressionism is the personal representation of the artists view of life What do you think was Edvard Munch s view on life?

Expressionism Expressionism an art history movement It s often depicted with expressive lines and simple representational images

The Scream The Scream is the nickname for a series of similar works done by Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910 most done in pastel and a few are black and white lithographs. The image represents a moment in time, captured during an evening walk. Who knows the famous pose for The Scream?

Edvard Munch The Scream Do you like this artwork? What colors are used? What emotion do you think Munch is trying to express with this art?

Some thoughts on what Edvard Munch was trying to convey Munch had the overwhelming sensory feeling of nature screaming out in agony on that walk The impression was due to the modern destruction of nature through industrialization

The Scream recreated in Popular Culture:

Project Idea 1. Have the children recreate The Scream while you talk about what has recently made them scream in their lives. 2. Have the children draw pictures of scenarios that make them scream 3. Do a Scream Blow Painting 1. Draw a head that takes up the bottom half of the paper. Draw a large mouth and raised features as shown so the face looks tilted up. 2. Trace all the lines with a black Sharpie marker. 3. Color heavily with crayon. The goal is to not have any blown paint sit on top of the face and clothes. 4. Use a straw to dab liquid watercolor paint around the head. Blow outward as much as possible to get thick and then thin lines.
