1 ART 3302/HUM 3324 History of Modern Art Spring 2005 CRNs 20129/20130 Professor: Dr. Susan J. Prerequisites: Completion of ENG 1301; 3 hours of Art History or Art Appreciation highly recommended. Course Objective: This course surveys world art from the Revolutionary Period (late 18th century), to contemporary times, including such artistic movements as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and Pop Art. Students will learn the names and works of notable artists and will interpret art works within the cultural context in which they were produced. They will also visit area museums and learn to interpret the art that they see. Textbooks: H.H. Arnason, History of Modern Art, 5 th edition, New Jersey: Prentice Hall, Mary Acton, Learning to Look at Modern Art, New York: Routledge, 2004 Grading: (also see enclosed Grading Worksheet) Students grades are based on the number of points that they earn. A student earns points by successfully completing identification quizzes, 4 reading quizzes, at least 3 tests, 2 museum assignments and a final exam. Identification quizzes (100 points): Identification quizzes test the student s ability to recognize art works from the textbooks by those artists listed in this syllabus. (See the calendar to see when quizzes are scheduled and which artists you are required to know for each quiz.) Students identify works of art by artist s last name only. No make-ups for quizzes are given. Reading quizzes (50 points each, 200 total points): Reading quizzes will cover the pages listed in the syllabus from Mary Acton s book Learning to Look at Modern Art and will be multiple choice. Students will be asked to complete a review sheet prior to class that they may use during the quizzes.

2 Museum assignments (100 points each, 200 total): Museum assignments are completed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Students must have their own transportation and be able to meet during class time at these museums. (The MFAH may be reached by light rail.) Tests (100 points each, 300 total) and the Final Exam (400 points): Tests and the final exam test the student s ability to recognize and discuss art works within a cultural context, and include identification, multiple choice and short answer/essay questions. Tests are designed to help prepare students for the final exam. There are no make-ups for tests. The fourth scheduled test serves as a makeup for anyone missing the first three. Students who take all four tests may use the points from the fourth test as bonus points up to 300 total test points. Make-ups for the final exam require a written excuse from an appropriate authority such as a doctor, counselor, or employer. Students are encouraged to keep a record of all their scores and to keep all assignments as documentation of points earned. UHD adheres to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities should register with Disabled Student Services and contact the professor in a timely manner (preferably before the first quiz) to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
