We will take into consideration the links between art, history and culture, and works are thus studied within their artistic, historical and social context. Topics covered go all the way from the Romanesque and Gothic churches and monasteries, to the medieval castles and fortifications and to the ground-breaking pictorial innovations of the French artistic milieu in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. A particular attention is paid to Southern France, more specifically the Toulouse region. The course will take full advantage of on-site classes and day-long tours, both in Toulouse and its region. Learning Objectives By the conclusion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate overall knowledge of Art history in France from the Middle Ages though contemporary works. They will be able to distinguish between architectural forms and painting styles and characteristics throughout these periods and quote specific examples to illustrate the differences. Students will also have a toolbox of resources from which they can draw for further exploration. Course Prerequisites None Methods of Instruction Instruction will be supported by a mix of authentic and secondary materials, including films and powerpoint presentations. The main classroom activity is discussion, initiated by short lectures and informed by the assigned materials. Readings are assigned to help students gain familiarity with key ideas and terms, which they will then be expected to integrate into their oral and written work (including a midterm presentation and a final exam). Active engagement in class will be enhanced through student-
2 led presentations, and the connection and relevance of the course to Toulouse will be illustrated with several field trips to Toulouse historical sites and museums. Assessment and Final Grade Students final grades will be based on an equal combination of the 1 st and 2 nd halves of the course. First half: 1. oral/visual presentation (33%) 2. sketchbook (33%) 3. class participation (33%) Second half: 1. final exam (60%) 2. class participation (40%) Course Requirements Final exam At the end of the course, students will be given a list of essay questions related to the contents of the second half of the course. Students will choose one question and address it in an essay paper. Students will need to demonstrate their accurate knowledge of architecture, art and historical context from the Middle Ages. Class presentation For the first half of the course, students will prepare a 15-to-20-minute oral/visual presentation, based on one of the artists we study, to be delivered to the class at the end of the 8 th session, ie midway through the course. The final grade for the first half of the course will be: 1/3 class participation, 1/3 sketchbook, and 1/3 oral presentation. Sketchbook Students are required to keep a sketchbook during the first half of the course, to record their observations, take notes, analyze works, and explore techniques. In addition to the general expectation that it be used, students will be given specific assignments in the sketchbook to help explore works and techniques in-depth in a visual format. Attendance and Class Participation Regular class attendance is required throughout the program. Students must notify center director and professor by beforehand if they will miss class for any reason. Students are responsible for any materials covered in class in their absence. Students who miss class for medical reasons must inform the Director and provide appropriate documentation as noted below.
3 Excessive tardiness (over 15 minutes late) will be treated as an absence. Attendance policies also apply to any required co-curricular class excursion or event, as well as to Internship, Service Learning, or required field placement. Students who miss class for personal travel will be marked as absent and unexcused. No make-up or re-sit opportunity will be provided. An absence in a CIEE course will only be considered excused if: - a doctor s note is provided - a CIEE staff member verifies that the student was too ill to attend class - evidence is provided of a family emergency Persistent absenteeism (students exceeding 5% or more of total course hours missed, or violations of the attendance policies in more than one class) may lead to a written warning from the Center Director, notification to the student s home school, and/or dismissal from the program in addition to reduction in class grade(s). Students with unexcused absences exceeding 10% of the total course hours will fail the course. Late assignments will be marked down 5% after the first day and 1% every day afterwards. No coursework will be accepted after the last day of class. Exam dates cannot be changed. Weekly Schedule Part I: 17 th through 21 st centuries (Una pett) This half of the course will be mostly lecture-discussions in class, combined with field trips to museums and/or galleries to observe, analyze, and discuss artworks in person. We will endeavor to understand and identify stylistic differences and the works of specific artists. With a focus on painting and including other media, we will examine social and historical contexts and changes that contributed to the creation of French artistic movements. In addition, we will build our vocabulary and ability in general to observe and talk about art. Schedule subject to change. This is hands-on learning to take full advantage of your being in Toulouse, France. Day 8 Periods of history. Roman conquest and heritage. Day 9 FIELD TRIP: Saint-Raymond Museum Day 10 Early Middle Ages, feudal society, Gregorian Reform. Romanesque architecture. Day 11 FIELD TRIP: Saint-Sernin Basilica.
5 Day 12 Middle Ages: the Age of Cathedrals Saint-Louis, the Black Death, the Hundred Years War. Gothic architecture Day 13 FIELD TRIP: Saint-Etienne Cathedral. Day 14 Art and Religion: iconography, symbols and symbolism. Day 15 FIELD TRIP: The Augustins Museum (Romanesque and Gothic sculpture). Day 16 Middle Ages: Church and Society, the Fight Against Heresies The Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade. Day 17 FIELD TRIP: the City of Carcassonne. Day 18: Middle Ages: Architecture and Politics; the Mendicant Orders (Dominicans, Franciscans), the Inquisition. Southern Gothic. Day 19: FIELD TRIP: the Jacobins Convent. Day 20: The end of Middle Ages; the birth of the Renaissance period. FIELD TRIP: the Pastel Trade (Renaissance palaces in Toulouse).
