7 Painting Class Materials List for Watercolor Painting Taught by Sandra Nowicki 140 lb Watercolor painting paper size 11 x 14. You will need 6 sheets. It is good to have a few extra sheets of paper for trying new techniques. 140 lb watercolor paper comes in two forms Watercolor paper block of paper which is glued together works best. Tablet of sheets of watercolor paper is fine, too. If you are using separate sheets of watercolor paper, you will need a roll of blue painter s tape and a small sheet of foam core a few inches larger than your watercolor paper to hold the paper in place while you paint. Roll of paper towels 2 water containers. Plastic cottage cheese or similar containers work well. Transfer paper (works like carbon paper) for transferring designs to watercolor paper. Gray or black transfer paper is available at Hobby Lobby and will last for many, many watercolor paintings. Watercolor brushes. Good quality watercolor brushes will last for years and will help you learn to paint much better pictures. Sets of brushes are often the most economical. Watercolor brushes and paper are often on sale at Hobby Lobby or in catalogs online. Check different sources for the best prices. flat wash brush, ½ to 1 wide round brush, size 7 or 8 small brush, size 3or 4 detail brush, size 1 fan brush for painting fur, foliage optional Rake brush ( has uneven length bristles) for special effects Watercolor paints are available in tubes or pans. Do not buy children s sets of paints for watercolor painting class because the paints are mostly fillers with very little pigment. These kinds of paints produce dull colors and will not cover the paper well. Sets of quality watercolor paints in tubes or pans are available made by Grumbacher, Winsor Newton, Holbein, and many others. Look for professional quality. Good quality paints will last for many paintings and are often on sale, too. Basic colors needed are red, blue, yellow, green, orange, brown, black, and violet. These colors will be included in sets of tube or pan colors. Optional additional colors are Burnt Sienna, cobalt blue, Terre Verte Green, Yellow Ochre and a tube of Chinese White for special effects. I usually have some white tempera paint available if needed. Palette to mix paint colors. Get a large enough palette to mix several colors at once because you will be blending colors as you paint. Many styles of palettes are available. Get one with several deep sections which will hold a lot of paint for painting large areas like skies. Some palettes have covers to keep your paints liquid longer. Watercolor supplies are available at Hobby Lobby in Kenosha and Racine and also at Michael s Art Supply. Some online sources are Dick Blick, Daniel Smith, Cheap Joe s and Nasco. If any participant has questions, feel free to phone or me. Sandra Nowicki sannowicki@aol.com
