1 PAGE 1 OF 6 CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF VICTORIA COMMUTE: A BUS SHELTER-BASED ART EXHIBITION CALL TO ARTISTS Opportunity: The City of Victoria and PATTISON Outdoor Advertising are proud to present a unique, highprofile art opportunity for emerging, Indigenous, and multicultural artists, craftspeople and artisans residing in the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands. This project is an entry point for artists who have had little opportunity to participate in public art or exhibit their artworks in Victoria. Commute, a bus shelter-based art exhibition will feature artworks displayed on bus shelters throughout the City of Victoria. Up to 18 artists will be selected for this exhibition. Their artwork will be shown on six bus shelters located throughout Victoria. Commute will run from July 2018 to June Artists may submit up to five suitable existing artworks, or create new work for consideration. All works must be original to the artist. Artist Fee: $500 CAD per image selected (artists may submit up to five artworks). Deadline for Submissions: 4 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2018 Installation: Rotating display on six bus shelters starting July 2018 ending June This opportunity is held in accordance with the City of Victoria Art in Public Places Program. About Victoria The City of Victoria believes that creativity is key to a healthy, vibrant city. As the regional centre for arts and culture, we aim to enhance our neighbourhoods, foster the arts, and work to create a city that is a natural draw for festivals and events. Project Background and Context Short-term public art installations are important in enhancing the face of the city, increasing its livability and creativity for both citizens and visitors. The City of Victoria is building on the success of the annual Commercial Alley Art Gallery by adding art into bus shelters to turn the City of Victoria s downtown into an outdoor gallery featuring local artists. The short-term nature of these projects helps to develop a greater understanding of public art as well as acceptance and demand for permanent public artworks. Commute will stimulate dialogue and new ways of thinking about neighbourhoods and the public realm, inspire local artists, and cultivate future public artists and audiences. The exhibition will focus on emerging, multicultural, and Indigenous artists who work in a variety of visual media and craft. A year-long exhibition, Commute will feature reproductions of original artworks installed on bus shelters across the city. Up to 18 artists will be selected to provide reproductions of their original works of art. Artwork images will be rotated throughout the city three times (once every four months) for a total of 18 individual artworks.

2 PAGE 2 OF 6 Art Opportunity Selected artists will provide images of their art or craft work in any visual medium that can be reproduced for display on select bus shelters.. Artworks must be appropriate for viewers of all ages, and while socially challenging art is always appreciated and encouraged, no nudity, gratuitous violence, racism, or hateful content is permitted. Selected artists may provide original, high-quality scans or reproductions of their artworks. All colour and black and white mediums are suitable, however, the artwork must be bold, readable, and easily viewed by passing motor vehicle and foot traffic. Artworks must also be able to be translated into the appropriate poster format (outlined below). Bus Stop Poster Format Bus stop posters are of two sizes: Type A is 48"W x 72"H Type B is 47"W x 68"H. Selected artists will need to supply a reproduction of their artwork at 1:8 scale at 600 dpi in one of these formats for MacOS: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe InDesign. Raster images should be placed as CMYK.tif or.eps files. HINTS Cut and paste or otherwise fit your image into the templates provided on page 3. It is scaled down from the final print size of 48"W x 72"H or 47"W x 68"H If you use the templates on page 3, place your work on the wall and move back five feet. If the image reads well, it should be readable on the final posters. Submission Requirements Artists interested in applying may submit up to five images. Images must be in high quality.jpeg format (.JPEGs must be at least 150 dpi). Artists may use the bus shelter poster template provided on page 3 of this call. 5 Terms of the Competition PAGE 5 OF 6 Artist Eligibility: This competition is open to emerging, Indigenous, and multicultural artists, craftspeople and artisans residing in Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands. The following disciplines will be accepted: digital media, ceramics, photography, watercolour, acrylic, drawing and fine craft. Application Process Artists who meet the following criteria may be considered for commission: 18 years of age or older Development of a practice in visual art or craft, as is relevant to the call Quality of overall work submitted Appropriateness of proposal for the context Suitability of final artwork for the poster format and/or ability to be formatted to the poster format Exclusion of tags or acronyms that wouldn t be meaningful to the public at large. Selection Process: Artists will be chosen through a one-stage jury process. The Selection Committee will include artists, design professionals, community members, and a representative of the Art in Public Places Committee. The Selection Committee will be facilitated by City staff but the final decision will be that of the Selection Committee. Communication with the Selection Committee: The City of Victoria will be responsible for all communication, either verbal or in writing, between artists making submissions and members of the Selection Committee. Any communication between applicants and Selection Committee members regarding submissions or the competition may result in disqualification. Original Work: The artist must guarantee that the artwork is original and does not violate the copyright of any other person. Copyright: Artists will retain copyright of the artwork but allow the City of Victoria to display reproductions for the purposes of this exhibition and other promotional purposes. The artwork s title and artist will be identified on each billboard image. Artists may retain the right to be identified as the creator of the artwork in promotional purposes wherever possible. Please note that the City of Victoria is not compelled to award the commission based on the expressions received. Commission: The total commission for the artwork is $500 (including GST). Artists can submit up to five images.

A brief biographical statement (100 words) 4. Five images of your work File names must be in the following format: 01initialsyeartitle.jpg (image number, applicant s initials, year of the work, title of the work). The image numbers must correspond to the title of work listed in the Support Material Documentation List. Image files must be: JPEG (.jpg,.jpeg) format RGB colour mode no larger than 1.5 MB 5. Support Material Documentation List Complete the template provided with descriptive and contextual information about the digital images, including the year produced and title of the work, medium, dimensions, and location.
