9 EPOXY FILLERS Epoxy Osmosis Filler (Α+Β COMPONENT 1Kg) Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler is a two component, solvent free, epoxy filler, for general use. It has outstanding resistance to water and chemicals. Due to the fact that it does not shrink, combined with the fact that it is extremely watertight, makes it ideal for the treatment of Osmosis. Fills small or medium-sized areas, up to 2 cm, without sagging. 12 MAINTENANCE STAGES Taking care of my boat The essence of effective boat protection is a result of our true care of our boat. All maintenance operations carried out professionally or by personal experience and deal with the following categories: GRP: Osmosis. Wood: Errosion. Metal (Steel - Aluminum): Corrosion. Fouling on underwater areas. Properly scheduled maintenance and protection operations, with Eumaria products, create the appropriate protective film that: Protects against fouling. Increases cruise speed. Reduces fuel consumption. Removing antifouling paints with Eumaria Paint Remover When your boat is docked initiate the plan for cleaning, maintenance or refinishing the underwater areas. First, you need to thoroughly wash the boat with water at high pressure, removing thereby shellfish, dirt, algae, seaweed, etc. Then let the surface dry. Apply a thick layer of Eumaria Paint Remover with a brush or spatula and let it act for minutes. Then remove the antifouling and undercoats using a spatula. The procedure can be repeated if necessary. After removing the paint, clean the surface with water or solvent and after drying you can begin the recoating process. Due to the fact that Eumaria Paint Remover is very effective, attention is required when applied on GRP surfaces. There are skilled professionals and paint companies with proper equipment who undertake such operations. Smart Tip When Paint Remover is applied on GRP boats use a plastic spatula to avoid damaging the surface. 12

14 PAINT PREPARATION TIPS We have gathered below a set of essential tips that we advise you to consider before beginning any paint application. The ideal temperature is 10 C to 20 C. Avoid applications under direct sunlight and relative humidity (RH) higher than 65%. For indoor applications, make sure the area is properly ventilated to avoid affecting drying time. For outdoor applications pick a day without windy conditions and pour water on the ground around the application area to avoid sticking dust and particles on the coated surface. Avoid painting at very low and very high temperatures. Stir thoroughly and be careful when mixing 2 - component products. If there is a mistake during colour mixing, the paint will not dry properly and the application will not have the appropriate result. Make sure all mixing and painting tools are clean. Select paint tools: 1. Airless painting equipment are ideal for primer and antifouling applications due to their excellent application without requiring thinning. 2. The use of air spray will increase the layers needed to reach the required total film thickness. 3. Mohair rollers and good quality brushes can be used, provided that they are solvent-resistant so they will not leave fibers and other contaminants during application. Smart Tips Avoid application when the temperature is not at least 3 C above the Dew Point. Before applying paint, mask the areas that will not be painted. Pay extra attention to the waterline. 14

16 PRIMERS - UNDERWATER PROTECTION Protection of the areas below the waterline is the most important stage of maintenance. With the use of epoxy or vinyl primers and epoxy fillers when necessary, protection of these areas is achieved preventing their interactions with the environment. Surface preparation is equally important 1. Remove any dust or dirt. Wash with warm water if possible. 2. Abrade the surface using suitable sanding paper. 3. Clean the surface thoroughly. 4. Apply the recommended primer layers and film thickness. If the temperature is too high or too low thin primer 5-10% with Eumaria Thinner 200. Smart Tip Tip Use a wet film thickness measure tool for more reliable results. Always read the relevant drying times and pot life of epoxy products after mixing. Conventional paints agitate and tightly close the container in order to reuse the paint whenever you need it. 17 EUMARIA EPOXY FILLERS Eumaria Epoxy Fillers are the ideal treatment for all surface defects. Before the application of Eumaria Epoxy Fillers, follow the steps below. 1. Make sure that the surface is clean, dry and sanded. 2. Apply one coat of Eumaria Epoxy Primer 100μm (WFT) and let it dry at least 24h. 3. Sand the primed surface to ensure strongest possible adhesion for Eumaria Epoxy Filler. 4. Clean the surface thoroughly and apply the appropriate Eumaria Epoxy Filler. Each type of Eumaria Epoxy Filler is used depending on the size and type of the defect holes, cracks scratches, dents, osmosis etc.). Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler is used to repair small or medium-sized defects. It is ideal for Osmosis treatment in GRP boats. The lightweight filler Eumaria Epoxy Light Filler is used for filling small and large surfaces. To achieve an ideal profile multiple layers may be needed. After applying and sanding Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler or Eumaria Epoxy Light Filler, if the required profile is not achieved (small holes, sanding lines, etc.), apply Eumaria Epoxy Finishing Filler, using a film thickness of 2mm perapplication. Smart Tip The ideal film thickness of Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler and Eumaria Epoxy Light Filler is 6mm per application. After each layer of any Eumaria Epoxy Filler, sand the surface, complying with the instructions for sanding time interval and pot life of the product after mixing. At least 1 coat of Eumaria Epoxy Primer 120μm WFT should be used over the last layer of any Eumaria Epoxy Filler. Depending on the material of the hull, various Eumaria protection systems are used. 18 Glass fiber boats are covered by gelcoat which is not fully waterproof. The moisture may penetrate and infect the polyester underneath, causing osmosis blistering (see page 28). 22 ANTIFOULING PROTECTION Fouling has a damaging effect on the surfaces where it appears over time. It can badly damage or even destroy the surfaces and result in costly repairs. The formation of an uneven sliding surface leads to the increase of fuel consumption mainly for motor boats as the engine is required to cope with new loads for the same cruising speed. 27 LAUNCHING Launching is possible when the final coat is dry to touch. If by any reason launching is postponed keep in mind not to expose the boat to direct sunlight. 28 OSMOSIS Osmosis is a real issue for all GRP boat owners. It is a process of surface wear caused by the chemical reaction of water in some places of the gelcoat which it is not fully waterproof. Once the gelcoat is affected, the polyester layers underneath will continuously absorb moisture and this will compromise its durability. Water penetrates the gelcoat reacting with chemical components creating acidic substances. These substances exert pressure behind the gelcoat, creating blisters and cracks. Osmosis is not only caused by seawater on the outer hull but also from the water inside the bilges. So bilges should be sealed properly. How Osmosis occurs Without proper protection osmosis will occur. The time which osmosis can occur depends on many factors. The main factors are boat docking location, water quality, water temperature, gelcoat surface defects and general hull quality construction. Due to these factors, It is recommend to use Eumaria Antiosmosis Protection for old and new boats. Osmosis Protection If the boat is new or has no particular problems then apply Eumaria Antiosmosis Protection. On used boats if the polyester or gelcoat is not in good condition, before applying an antiosmosis system, seek professional advise. The best time for implementing Eumaria Antiosmosis Protection is before launching. Smart Tips Protection is always better than cure and it really makes sense to protect a new boat as well as an old one. Proper maintenance and protection against osmosis is an investment for your boat. 28

29 OSMOSIS Osmosis Treatment Proper surface preparation: First you have to wash the boat with water at high pressure and let it dry. Drying of the hull: Α. Sand the surface to remove all old layers of antifouling, primers and all or a part of the gelcoat. Β. Rinse the surface with water (hot if possible) and let the boat dry completely. This process may need to be repeated several times, depending on the problem. This stage is very important for the treatment. If the hull is not cleaned and dried completely, will create osmosis again. Before any further action make sure that the moisture content in the laminate is less than 1%. Thereafter prime the entire surface with Eumaria Epoxy Primer. Fill with EUMARIA Epoxy Osmosis Filler all imperfections (holes, cracks scratches, dents, etc.). Then apply over the surface a film of 1mm thickness with Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler to achieve a tight water proof barrier. If the desired profile is not reached, avoid sanding the surface with the risk of excessive reduction and apply one more layer of Eumaria Epoxy Osmosis Filler. Choose the proposed Eumaria Antiosmosis Protection System for 5 years (see page 18). Always follow the recommended recoat times (pages 16, 17 and 24). 29

30 HEALTH AND SAFETY Personal Safety Whenever you are using paint materials, it is important that all personal safety measures are taken including personal protective equipment. Use the appropriate Chemical Protection uniform, gloves, goggles, mask with and safety shoes necessary for your personal protection. Always read the manufacturer s operating instructions on the label, for further information on Safety issues please refer to the Safety Data Sheets. Risk of fire or explosion Most marine paints contain volatile and flammable organic solvents. Please take necessary prevention measures: Do not smoke near paints or while paints being stirred. Do not light fire where paints are stored, opened or applied. Store paint in well-ventilated rooms and always in shady places. Keep the containers properly closed. Avoid sparks, electrical appliances or faulty electrical connections close to the stored containers. 30

32 F.A.Q. The paint is not drying. Drying time is directly affected by ambient conditions (temperature - humidity). Please consult the relevant drying and recoat interval tables. Also, paint thinning must be done with the appropriate solvent on the recommended quantity. When using 2 component paints always mix correctly and follow manufacturer instructions. Runs. Excessive paint thinning causes runs on the application surface. Sand and repaint. Wrinkled paint. Extremely high Wet Film Thickness or application under extreme weather conditions. Remove paint, clean surface and repaint. Is it possible to change the shade of the antifouling? Adding colorants or pigments alternate the antifouling properties thus resulting to poor performance. Can I apply hard antifouling over soft antifouling? It is important to remove all existing soft antifouling as it might cause cracking on the surface of hard antifouling. Is Eumaria Antifouling compatible with existing antifouling? The Eumaria antifouling range is compatible with most antifouling of the same chemical composition in the market. However it is highly recommended to remove the old antifouling and apply at least a primer coat of Eumaria Vinyl Primer prior of any antifouling application. Can I apply any antifouling paint available in the market? All antifouling paints available in the Greek market must be licensed by the Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food. The Authorization Number must be written on any product label, not only for the manufactured products but also for the imported ones. Can I apply Eumaria antifouling paint and travel around the globe? Eumaria antifouling have been submitted to extensive and thorough performance tests and comply with all international environmental restrictions. 33 ANTIFOULING COMPATIBILITIES The Eumaria antifouling range is compatible with most antifouling of the same chemical composition in the market, such as: ATTIVA, INTERNATIONAL, JOTUN, SEAJET, STOPPANI, TITAN etc. Existing antifouling of Teflon, Silicon etc. composition are incompatible and should be removed. It is highly recommended to apply at least one primer coat of Eumaria Vinyl Primer, prior of any Eumaria Antifouling application. 33
