President s Message September 2009 What a great summer!!! It s going to be fun to get back together hug and listen to each of our stories of How we spent our summer vacation. Where did you go??? What did you do??? Did you attend a quilting class? Did you find a new fabric store? Did you finish a UFO or did you start a new project? We ll want to hear all about it! SEW WHAT S NEW I would like for you all to put on your thinking caps! We re going to have a round table discussion to find out what direction you would like to see our guild go. Do we want more Well known Speakers & Workshops? Do we want more of our meetings to include a workshop sponsored by one of our own guild members. Perhaps include some new techniques or some basic instruction for our new members who would love to learn to quilt. We really want your ideas! We are so lucky to have so many talented folks in our guild so this discussion should be fun!!! Our guild has lost two valued members Amy Lewis and Paul Braden. With the economy as it is, they decided to move out of state to seek work. We will miss them, but hope they will be successful and happy. As you know Amy and Paul were our guild s librarians. Therefore, this position is now vacant. We would like to have at least one, but preferably two volunteers to be our librarians. If this position is of interest you please contact me or one of the other board members. See you soon!!! Suzy Marshall, President One of the gals in the Stashbuster online group has been collecting tips/ tricks from various postings and made them available from one central location:

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 3 September 2009 Membership Hi all, Hard to believe it s September already, isn t it? As Membership chairs, we re the first folks you see when you walk in the door. Membership activities include: Welcoming new and returning members at each meeting. Accepting dues and membership forms for both new members and renewals (and here s a quick reminder to renew if you haven t already!) Compiling, maintaining, and sending out the roster. We send out two rosters a year in October and April to keep you all current on contact information for the group. Introducing new members and guests at meetings. Providing birthday information for the newsletter. Helping to ensure that everyone s wearing a name tag. We have temporary name badges if you ve forgotten your regular one. Sending out blasts from the guild. If our mail isn t making it past your spam filter, please make sure you have mkirsche@san.rr.com in your Contacts. We ll try to ensure that new members get a walk-through of the meeting room, with a stop at each of the tables, so that we can show off all of our cool activities. Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help with this, because sometimes it can get pretty busy at the membership table. Looking forward to a great year, and please send in your renewals (or renew at the meeting) so we ll have up-to-date information in the next roster. In stitches! Marilyn and Cheri

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 4 September 2009 Ways and Means Many thanks to all the worker bee's who came to the summer sit and sews. We had a great turn out people enjoyed great company, food and quilting. A special thanks to all who created a Christmas table runner, pillow cases, quilt or what ever for our Christmas Boutique in December. If you have a kit out or are planning to make something for the boutique please let Annie, Mary or Linda know what you are working on and when we might expect it returned. Our push now will be to get all the quilt tops we have made quilted and to work on quilted Christmas Stockings. If you are a stocking maker please make a Christmas stocking to sell at the boutique. We have no tree skirts this year unless someone is feeling crafty with a lot of time on their hands and wants to create a few tree skirts. We have over 25 table runners completed, beautiful pot holders, several charming Christmas wall hangings, pillowcases and a few Aprons and Children's quilts. Thank you for participating in this fundraiser. The Village Store will be open at our September meeting if you have anything to contribute please bring it to the September meeting. Items to bring would be handmade small items such as bookmarks, tote bags, pot holders, table runners, wall hangings, craft items you no longer use or want. All these items should be quilt or sewing related. If your item does not sell at the September meeting I would appreciate your taking it home with you or I will donate it to Goodwill. A large box of unsold items has sat under my sofa table for 3 months, it's tacky. I cannot transport and save items from month to month. We are very grateful for anything you might bring. Thank you Thank you. Annie, Linda and Mary Hospitality Hope Campbell and Kim Stevenson are the new hospitality organizers. We look forward to keeping up the tradition of excellence. The following people have signed up to bring refreshments to the September meeting: Deb McManus Rene Robinette Linda Hughes Jan Halldorson We don't know what you'll bring, but we're sure it will be a great mid-morning snack. Hospitality will provide beverages, cups, napkins and plastic utensils. Hope Campbell (Quilting4Hope@aol.com) and Kim Stevenson Classifieds and Websites Classifieds: Sell, give away or get items from your fellow guild members. All items must be related to quilting and will be published just one time. Perhaps you have a sewing machine you would like to sell; or you re looking for a special ruler or book. Websites: Share sites that you find yourself visiting over and over again. Submit classifieds (with your contact information) and favorite websites to Rene Robinette at robinette@san.rr.com

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 6 September 2009 Block of the Month Welcome back to our Block of the Month! We start our year with the following schedule: Sept: Dorothy Stout Nov: Janet Beyea Jan: Diane Hart Mar: Gail Tauscher May: still available Oct: Betty Molnar & BJ Steitz Dec: Holiday Luncheon no block Feb: Jan Kolarov & Anna Apr: Sharon Ainsworth Jun: Year-end luncheon no block Dorothy already has given us the blocks for the Sept meeting. There will be 21 Disappearing Nine Patch blocks for sale. For the new members: What is Block of the Month? Each month a member is signed up to select a pattern and make a sample block (minimum of 8 size) for sale. They then make up at least 20 kits (more if desired) containing the pattern and fabric, either fully or semi-cut into pieces for assembly. Kits are put into baggies -2 blocks per baggie (one for the winner and one for the maker). Guild members can purchase one or more kits for $2 per kit, and return the completed block/s at the next guild meeting. Everyone who turns in a completed block has their name entered in the drawing (one entry per completed block). Just think, an entire quilt top of blocks for $2 and the time it takes to make one of the blocks. What more could you ask for? Just think of the holiday or birthday gifts you could get out of the way by winning these blocks! Now it was decided last year that the member signing up for this has the option of making up kits for a winner and herself, or all for the winner. That is because some members want to try out a pattern, material, etc., but just don t want half the blocks back. So, while all but one of the months are spoken for, this gives you a good idea what we re doing each month. Also gives you an idea for signing up for next year. J See y all at the meeting in September! Karen Kluwin Doris Hargrove karenkluwin@msn.com Happy Birthday to the following members:

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 7 September 2009 Fabric Exchange Welcome back, Quilters and Fabric Collectors! Hope your summer was great. We re going to keep things simple for the Fabric Exchange & Trade this year. Only TWO sizes this year: (1) a fat quarter if you wish to do the Exchange drawing and/or (2) 48 6-inch squares, if you wish to do the Trade and get 48 squares in return. Things to remember: You get one raffle ticket for each fat quarter you bring for the Fat Quarter Fabric Exchange drawing. Use a GOOD QUALITY fabric. We discussed that last year Always pre-wash your fabric for the Exchange/Trade. If you are cutting 6 squares, please cut off the salvage edges. No need to do this if you are cutting a fat quarter. When cutting 6 squares, use good judgment and do not choose a large print, as they are more difficult to use. Both the Fabric Exchange and the Fabric Trade will use the same patterns/colors below. For the Fabric Trade of 6 squares, please put your 24 pairs (for a total of 48 squares) in a plastic baggie and label the bag with your name. If you have fewer than 48 squares, please note that on a piece of paper. (Thanks!) Here are the patterns for the coming year: Sep Autumn Batiks Oct Spots & Dots & Stripes Nov 1930 s and Aunt Gracie s Dec Christmas Blenders (Tone-on-Tone or small print) Jan Winter White, Neutrals & Grey Feb Orientals Mar Soft Baby Pastels Apr New Colors on the Market May Fun Summer Novelties Jun Patriotic Red, White & Blue We are looking forward to another fun year of Fabric and Quilting! 8 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 8 September 2009 June 2009 Treasurer s Report VQ is an organization of people who like and appreciated quilting. Our membership is made up of new quilters, old quilters and people who just appreciate the fabric arts. If you are new to quilting and thought quilt guilds were only for experienced quilters, please think again. Our meetings offer an opportunity to learn from each other and to be challenged to try new things. Each meeting provides opportunities to hear from talented guests in the quilting industry and identifies ways you can support your community through the making and giving of quilts to the needy. Meetings are held on the second Saturday, September through June. Join the guild for $25, renew your membership for $20 or come as a guest for $3. We look forward to seeing you.

SEW WHAT S NEW Page 9 September 2009 Special Projects/ Philanthropy Sandra Walker reported at the June board meeting, that she received two large quilts from Kathy Greene for Hidden Valley House and one from Annie Mitchell. In addition 19 preemie quilts were donated - Gail Tauscher[1], Betty Molnar[1] and Mary Lewis[17]. Darlene Piche's mother, Pauline, sent in two preemie caps. Three preemie kits were taken. Thank you to everyone that took time to donate so generously to this well deserved cause. I want to thank Sandra Walker for the wonderful job she did this last year and for her commitment to help me with Special Projects this year. I went through all the containers of fabric, to familiarize myself with what we have. We have two huge plastic tubs with large to very large pieces that will make nice backings, especially for the larger Hidden Valley House quilts. If anyone has finished tops, we can supply the backings. We also have very nice prints that I am excited to put together in kits. We really do need more baby prints for the preemie quilts. If there is anybody that have extra fabric suitable for babies, we will appreciate any donations. I am looking forward to serving Village Quilters the upcoming year, as best as I can. Please feel free to offer any suggestions that will help make the new year a great Special Projects adventure! Anwill Konig. anwillkonig@san.rr.com Sit-N-Sews We will meet at Amidon s Quiltworks from 10:00 till 2:00 on the following dates. Bring a lunch and your own project and meet with us for a good time. Thursday, September 10 Thursdays, October 8 and 22 Wednesdays, November 4 and 18 Wednesdays, December 2 and 16
