1 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 1 December 2014 December 2014 No matter how I say it shukran kteer (Arabic for thanks a lot), muchisimas gracias (in Spanish, thank you very much) or the French merci mille fois (a thousand thank yous) I don t know how to give Diana Foster sufficient thanks for shepherding our endeavors for our major fund-raising project, the Old-Fashioned Christmas Boutique in Scripps Ranch. She completed an impressive number of beautiful items herself using fabrics from her own stash as well as the Ways and Means collection, and Diana put together so many kits for the rest of us to assemble that we couldn t keep up with her. We had a huge, impressive inventory so big, in fact, that it couldn t all be displayed fully. Since we were extraordinarily productive and this was a challenging year for the boutique participants, we ll have a large supply of table runners and potholders to provide much of our inventory for next year. I m particularly grateful to everyone who produced an abundance of those pesky potholders that were bedeviling me at this year s retreat, but I also have high praise and many thanks for everyone who stitched other items, assembled kits and did binding and machine quilting. We also got a big boost from those who helped show off, explain and sell our creations and gathered up our stock at the end of the show. Also serving the cause were members who shopped at our booth. I even watched one purchase items she d made from her own stash. That s what you call extreme generosity. We got help from two friends of Village Quilters who don t sit still long enough to sew but were willing to show off our dog scarves: Linda Roth and her golden retriever Happy, a beautiful trained therapy dog whose natural gait is a highstepping prance worthy of a fashion model. Linda and Happy worked the lines of people waiting to get into the boutique, and thanks to Happy s modeling and Linda s sales job, we sold nearly all our Christmasy dog scarves. I know that Diana will be looking for an intern to learn the ropes of this Ways and Means job starting early next year to prepare for becoming next year s Ways and Means chair, and I hope one of our savvy members will figure out that this is a terrific year to volunteer, since you ll be able to learn the job in advance, start with a substantial inventory and figure out early how to divvy up many of the responsibilities before, during and after the boutique. You d also win our sincere and profound gratitude. Happy holidays, Carol Goodhue Shull President, Village Quilters

4 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 4 December 2014 Ways and Means A sincere thank you to all of you for helping make this year s Boutique such a great event. All of your talents and help were greatly appreciated. We have enough stock to allow us to sit back and coast for the next few months. Did I hear a cheer come from Scripps Ranch? This should make it easier for my successor. We have kits cut and runners made. You won t be hearing my plaintiff cries for the next few months. Relax, ladies! You deserve a rest. At the Christmas Potluck we will have a Chinese Auction where you put your purchased tickets in bags and one lucky member or guest wins the prize in that bag. We will have some lovely items for your Christmas Shopping pleasure(i sound like QVC) Lots of runners, toppers, potholders, mug rugs, etc. We will also have a sale of select items for 25% off their marked price. For a special treat we will have a separate drawing (with different colored tickets) for the Jean Impey Pillow that she donated to us a few months ago. I will be sad to see it go as it has brightened my living room. Once again thank you to all. I look forward to seeing you at the potluck and buy those tickets! Happy Holidays! Diana

5 SEW WHAT S NEW Page 5 December 2014 Thank you to all who contributed to our favorite charities in the month of November. Mary Lewis for making 17 beautiful baby bibs for Gently Hugged. Lynell Hallock for 8 pairs of charming baby booties for Gently Hugged. Thank you Mary, Janice and Bobbie for 7 beautiful quilts for Kaiser Hospitals Special Care Unit. Thank you Diane DeWiese and her prolific PQ LDS church workers for completing 11 Special Care Nursery Quilts and a special thanks to Carrie Matthews at Curls and Swirls for quilting all those beautiful quilts. It does take our Village Quilters to make such an impact in so many needy lives. Have a Happy and Joyous Holiday. Annie Mitchell Thank you from Ann Gunny Your group donated a Winnie the Pooh quilt to a tiny preemie at Kaiser Zion in August That baby was my daughter Emily. She is now 10 years old. She is happy and healthy and she still sleeps with her Winnie the Pooh quilt. Thanks for sending a ray of sunshine to the NICU. It continues to provide warmth and comfort.
