General Cutting Needle information Each brand of machines listed below has their own cutting needles. They are known as Cutwork Tools, Cutwork Needles or Venere Needles. Some companies are color coded, some are numbered. The chart below shows circles with a lines thru them. This line represents the angle of the cutting knife. Also listed is each companies color coding or numbering system. Please refer to your color coding or numbering system when choosing the correct cutting needle. Also note: For these cutting needles to work properly, the upper thread sensors MAY need to be disabled before sewing to keep the machine from stopping because there is no thread in it. Please follow your manufactures instructions for doing so, if required. 20 Blue Star Service Banner 1.) Fold one of the 9 x 10 pieces of white fabric in quarters. Finger press to mark a cross hair fold in the center. Unfold and with a water soluble pen mark the fold line. 2.) Make a quilt sandwich with the marked fabric on top, then the 9 x 10 piece of Battilizer and the second piece of white fabric on the bottom. Spray temporary spray adhesive between layers. 3.) Using your smallest hoop possible, hoop the sandwich, centering the cross hair. Stitch the Blue Star Service Banner design using Blue Embroidery thread in the needle and the bobbin. 4.) Remove from hoop and cut to 6 x 10 rectangle by trimming off 1 1/2 from both sides. 5.) Using red fabric as the bread make a 5 1/2 x 24 sandwich, spray with temporary spray adhesive. Cut four 2 x 10 border pieces from sandwich. A smaller gold star was placed over the blue star, leaving a blue border to represent a serviceman killed in action. A smaller silver star was sewn in place to represent someone injured. We have provided embroidery files in the Blue Star Service Banner folder to make these stars. You will choose either the needle cut or needle mark method and then embroider the star in silver or gold. Follow the instructions on pages and then sew the star over the blue star using your sewing machine and a straight stitch. 6.) Use the 1 sashing strips on both the front and back to join the side borders first. Square up the corners and add the top and bottom borders next. 7.) Bind, add sleeve and hang with pride. Thank you for honoring our service men and women. See slideshow for step by step photographs 20
21 Tips for Embroidered Hand Quilting The red stripes in Lil Glory and Old Glory can be stitched with red polyester embroidery thread in the needle and the bobbin and it will look fabulous...but if you really want it to look tremendously fabulous, then with a little fussing you can get your embroidery machine to embroider hand quilting stitches. We caution you, patience and testing is required. This is a delicate balance between monofilament thread in the needle and embroidery thread in the bobbin. You will use (if available) a special quilting bobbin case. The bobbin thread will be pulled to the top every other stitch to make it look hand quilted. Included with the design is a test hand quilting block. You will use this file to test the stitching on your machine, with your thread and your bobbin case. Once you get the proper tension setting with your equipment, you are ready to make the block. If you are experiencing difficulty, don t be discouraged, simply stitch the quilting stitches using your normal bobbin case and thread. It will still be beautiful, and you won t be pulling your hair out. Remember testing is the key! Note: This is not really hand quilting, it is a replica of hand quilting. It will not be perfect, but will give the look. If you can live with pretty darn good, then go for it. Here s How: Replace your regular bobbin holder with the special quilting bobbin holder. Place embroidery thread in the bobbin. Use the same thread you will use in your quilt to test. Place a very good quality monofilament Hoop a quilt sandwich. Turn off thread cut feature on your machine. Pull bobbin thread to top of block and hold on to both threads as you begin stitching the test file. Stitch the basting stitch to hold layers together. Begin stitching the quilting stitches. If it is not pulling the bobbin thread to the top to make pretty hand look stitches, slowly increase your top tension. Increase about.5 at a time to see what looks best. TIP: Monofilament thread can be a problem! Slow the machine down to it s slowest speed. If the thread gives you fits, then hand feed the thread. That is, hold the spool in your hand and make sure it doesn t get wound around something. You may find it necessary to test more than once to get the results you are happy with. Record your setting on the instruction sheet on page 6, step
