1 Cosy man s pullover with shawl or crew neck options

2 Level of Difficulty: beginner to intermediate This cosy and stylish man s pullover is designed to keep you warm and make a practical outer garment. Designed by Rita Taylor in Blacker Swan yarn, it can be worn comfortably next to the skin or over a shirt. The sweater has a choice of round neck or warmer shawl collar, with these and the cuffs and welt in an attractive 3 plus 3 rib. Taking a simple horizontal colour block theme, the design is enlivened by rows of contrast or brightly coloured dashes. The original dashes are in navy and Sorrel (oxblood) red but the pullover could be adapted for ladies using pinks or mauves, jazzed up with orange and turquoise or even neutralized by using black or the Stone colour of the first colour block (which will also save on yarn). To Finish Press all pieces. Join left shoulder seam and neckband. Set in sleeves, matching the centre of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. Sew sleeve and side seams. Sew in yarn ends neatly. Collar Continue in rib until collar fits generously along the back neck edge to centre of back neck. Leave sts on a stitch holder. The right side of the collar is worked behind the left side from stitches picked up along the base of the collar. With RS facing, fold the collar down to reveal inside of garment and first row of collar rib. 5 Keeping the collar rib correct throughout, cast off 9 (10, 10, 10, 10) sts at the beginning of the next row to leave 66 (66, 70, 72, 78) sts Work 1 row in rib and knit the next row to leave 56 (56, 60, 61, 66) sts Work 1 row in rib and knit the next row to leave 46 (46, 50, 50, 54) sts of collar Collar Continue in rib on sts for collar until collar fits generously along the back neck edge to centre of back neck. Leave sts on holder. Care advice: Hand wash in cool water using a liquid wool wash. Spin dry. Do not tumble dry. Spread to dry on a towel or drying rack, hand pressing garment to shape and correct size. Garments may be hung to dry on a hanger or over a clothes or ceiling airer once they have been spun, but with a hanger you may get hanger marks at the shoulders and a larger garment may grow if too damp before hanging; and with bars you should move a little several times to avoid marks. Stocking stitch and lace garments may benefit from light pressing (never press rib areas as they will lose their stretch!). Store folded. To Finish Press all pieces. Join shoulder seams. Collar: join the collar pieces together at centre back neck using any of the following methods: 1/ graft the stitches together 2/ work a three needle cast off - Place the stitches onto two 4mm needles, with the point of the needle pointing away from the neck on both collar edges. Hold the pair of needles with the two sets of stitches in the left hand, with the right sides of the collar facing each other (the right sides are inside the garment but will become the right side after the collar is turned back) and the needle points together, hold the spare 4mm needle in the right hand. Push the point of the spare needle through the front of the first stitch on the front needle and the side of the stitch closest to you on the back needle. Knit this stitch onto the spare needle, taking care when easing the two stitches off the left needles. **Push the spare needle through the next two stitches and knit onto right hand needle. Pass the first stitch over the second stitch (as per normal cast off)** Repeat from ** to ** until there is only one stitch on the right hand needle. Break yarn and pass through this last stitch. 3/ cast-off the two sets of sts and sew together, making sure the seam is on the outside of the collar so it is hidden when the collar is turned back. Sew collar pieces to the back neck edge. Set in sleeves, matching the centre of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. Sew sleeve and side seams. Sew in yarn ends neatly. Fold shawl collar to right side.
