And we have a waiting list. There are about 8 boys signed up. One boy is from the Ukraine and speaks no English. That should be fun. The first person to sign up home-schools her children and she put the word out on the homeschool network. At least one of the papers put out the word. One of the Mississippi guild newsletters had an article about children quilting. I wrote and asked for more detail. Here s what I got. KIDS CAN QUILT This started about three or four years ago. Simple machine pieced projects. One year a small throw, purse, tote bags; this year a pillow top machine quilted. Most of the participants are grandkids of guild members and have been there throughout so each year a different skill is introduced. A couple have gone on to make full sized quilts themselves at home, etc. We are all about the education and sharing of quilting skills. My grandkids are waaay off in Denver, Colo so I envy your choice! The guild pays for the materials and each adult brings her own machine and works with the kid to learn the skill. The kids pay maybe $10 each to cover costs. Any "kits" left over are sold to guild members so nothing goes to waste. My grandson, Jackson, who will be 5 August 18th, overheard me talking to a mother on the phone and said he wanted to make a block. He made two 9-patch blocks one was cow fabric and black; the other was green and pink. I gave him the blocks and showed him how to line them up for a 9-patch. He sewed the rows without my help. Then I pinned the rows together and he joined them. He joined the 2 blocks and decided to make a Chef s apron so he sewed ties on 4 corners. The next day he came in and said he wanted to make another block. He picked out Easter Egg fabric and teal but laid them out in a non-tradional ways. Maybe I can get him to make enough for a small quilt. Let s share our knowledge with the next generations. Featured Member Marge Frost How long have you been quilting? Since nearly 20 years. Who taught you how to quilt? I am mostly self taught, using books and magazines for ideas. What are your favorite quilting techniques? I love to piece. I am particularly fond of Drunkard's Path designs and Log Cabin blocks ----things that are simple and involve strips. What are your favorite colors to work with? "My" colors are reds, greens and mustardy yellows. Most of my work is with scraps. What are your favorite fabrics to work with? All cottons...mostly traditional prints, my current favorites are the dusty looking Civil War type colors and prints. What is your favorite quilt shop? I enjoy Little Qults, and shops along the road when we travel. If you sew by machine, what kind(s)do you use? I have a Bernina 1090 Quilter's Edition What inspires you to make a particular quilt? I am quite impulsive...i often start by making "just one block" and before long I have my sewing room turned upside down hunting up fabrics to use. I have never, ever cut all the fabrics for a quilt before starting to sew. What is your favorite quilting book or pattern? I learned the most about color from Jinny Beyers' " Color Confidence for Quilters." I love Marti Michell's "Scrap Patchwork and Quilting." Both books came out in the early 1990's. On average, how many quilts do you make in a year? I've slowed down considerably because of arthritis in the wrists and thumbs, but in years past, probably I have completed over 30 bedsize quilts. Do you quilt your own quilts or do you send them out? I have handquilted, "bigstitched " or machine quilted my own, except for two...my very first bedsized quilt, and just a few weeks ago, a T-shirt quilt quilted by Broach Winsley. What quilt-related item(s) are you working on right now? I'm thinking about my donation quilt, and I'm working on a scrap quilt done with Civil War fabrics in a Roman Square design. What other hobbies do you have? I love to play bridge, read and I play the piano. Tell about one way that quilting has changed your life. Quilting has given me a way to spend time with myself doing something I truly enjoy. I am absolutely NEVER bored! Are you on any committees with the CRQG? Not presently. Feel free to tell us more about yourself and your family. I am married to Jerry, a former Eastern Airlines Captain. We have four grown children, and two teenage grandsons. Our youngest is being married (at last!) in June and all of us will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, for his wedding. It will take place at a campground! I'm sure I will have tales to tell about the whole experience.

(For larger photo of project..click here) Do Kaleidoscopes look difficult or intimidating with all those sharp points and numerous pieces? Learn the easy way in a paper piecing workshop on October 8th taught by Sarah Sorenson. Make one block to use it as the center for a medallion quilt or more blocks the choice will be yours. Sarah has been paper piecing for about 16 years, almost as long as she has been quilting. Her love for the technique of paper piecing is obvious when you see her miniature quilts and wall hangings. She has taught paper piecing classes and conducted workshop for a number of shops and guilds. In 2004 she had the opportunity to sew for Jodie Davis, a nationally known author and president of QNN in Jodie s book 10, Minutes to Learn Paper Piecing. More recently, Jodie commissioned Sarah to complete the blocks needed for a full size quilt. Sarah has also taken classes with quilt designer, Judy Neimeyer, whose paper piecing patterns are absolutely stunning. PLEASE BE KIND!! Please be sure to fill out the Golden Scissors and Treasurer forms BEFORE the meeting? You can also download the forms from the Member Forms page on the website at this link

6 July 2011 Cherokee Rose Quilters Guild Page 6 Bee News We had to make some last-minute adjustments to our bee for June and it was held at my house. Hope everyone got the message. Eight of us had a great time. Thanks, Eleanor, for bringing the dessert! Hope you re feeling better, Terry! The July bee will be on Thursday, July 21 st, at 9:30 a.m. at Irene Gardner s house (4954 Horton Place, Douglasville). Irene will be serving lunch so please call her at or her (i.gardner@comcast.net) and let her know you are planning to attend. If you have any questions about the bees, please call or me at sandra7779@comcast.net. Everyone is welcome! Sandra Wilson, Beekeeper Day Hospitality Day hospitality is inviting you to bring goodies for everyone to enjoy at the meetings. Day Hospitality is working in conjunction with our July Day Meeting program this month. We are asking you to bring a drink to share, nibbles (pre packaged and priced nibbles) for the "yard sale", and plenty of money to buy food and items at the "yard sale". Brownies, cookies, small loaves of dessert breads, fudge, even maybe a pie (SMILE) -- all of these would make very good items for the Guild to be able to sell and make some money. We so greatly appreciate all of you who month after month are so willing to bring food to share with others. THANKS! Golden Scissors Irene Gardner Potato Chip Quilt" 251" Sandra Wilson. We have been traveling, logging many miles, taking a lot of pictures and making memories. We did something new this year. The Hot Rod Power Tour, a traveling car show of approx cars of all shapes, sizes, colors and power. The tour started in Cocoa Beach, FL and ended in Detroit, MI; stopping in a different location each night and we traveled back roads to most of these locations! So what does all this have to do with quilting? Well, needless to say I m not getting much of it done but I m catching up on my reading more about that in a minute. What struck me was the amount of time, effort, and love these men put into their machines or in many cases their works of art! Isn t that what we do with our quilts? As I looked at these cars, I was awestruck with the details put into them, the different color combinations used, and pride the builders showed if you asked a question about the car. Is that any different than us? Like quilters, car builders / enthusiast are always thinking about what else to do to their current project or what the next project might be. I m hoping your current project or next project is a quilt for Douglas Co. Head Start Program, as we would love to supply all 141 kids with a quilt of their own. Have you made one or more? There is still time. A line from the book I m currently reading says You know quilts are never perfect or finished. Just abandoned. Is it time to abandon a project and turn it over to a great cause?
