Head up to the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, VA. This year, the museum will spotlight the state s different regions and examine the influences of geography on the artist. Stitching It All Together the Threads that Unite Us features quilters of the Tidewater region. The show opens on May 6 th and runs thru August 23 rd. STITCHING IT ALL TOGETHER highlights the diversity of this region and the rich cultures and traditions that impact the artists here. The artists include national and regional award winners as well as many talented, yet unknown artists from our guild. From the syncopated rhythm of the modern-art quilter to the steady cadence of the traditional quilter, the wide range of quilt styles reflect how quilters come together in celebration of this time-honored art form. All are welcome to attend the Meet the Artists reception on Saturday, June 7 from 1PM 4PM. While in Harrisonburg, spend a day sampling the richness of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Trendy restaurants, museums, art galleries and QUILT SHOPS are located within minutes of the museum. For more information, visit Bella Fabrics, in Suffolk, is an exhibit sponsor. We have room for 10 participants. Please call Cease Pine at to register. A list of supplies will be ed upon registration. Come and join us for a fun time. Gadget Guru (Margo Bavry) quilter11@me.com) What do you do with your batting scraps? I found something you can use to use up those batting scraps. It is called "Heat Press" Batting together. You lay the batting edges together and press the tape over the edges and now you have a larger piece, and best thing, it is100% made in the USA!! Happy Quilting, Margo TQG s Sew What May 2014 Page 2

9 Saturday Chapter Minutes, April 5, 2014 Linda Yeager, TQG Sat. Chapter Secretary 26 members, 1 guest The Saturday Chapter was called to order by Pam Traynham. 1) Constance Spotts encouraged the selling of raffle tickets. Tambrey Zang will be the new Sat. chapter representive for the raffle. More than 800 tickets were sold during the Mid Atlantic Quilt Show alone. We are also awaiting confirmation that the Nimble Thimbles (Wed Morning Sara's Thimbles) will be making the 2015 raffle quilt. 2) Elaine Page brought our attention to the photo of her husband Les Page (Quilts of Valor Foundation) presenting a Quilt of Valor at the Marine Corps Museum to a newly promoted Marine. The photo appears in the current "American Patchwork and Quilting" magazine (page 10). She also read a thank you letter from a WWII veteran and his daughter and photos of the recipient with his quilt made by our Anne Hannigan. 3) Diane Bennett is looking for theme suggestions for next years Mancuso Show guild quilt. Please contact her. 4) Carol Dull/Karen Fisher is looking for nominations from members for positions to be filled for the next/upcoming year on both the Saturday chapter guild (Chapter coordinator & Program coordinator--which can be done by a group or rotating basis) and the executive board. There will be a May presentation of names/volunteers with the positions beginning in August. 5) Volunteers are still needed for the June quilt show. Please contact Jane Ann Snyder for ad placements in the show programs. Nancy McLaulin has scheduled a basket making work day for April 26th. It will be a pot luck and run from 9-4pm. 6) Congratulations go out to the 9 volunteer quilters that donated their machines, skill, and patience to the Girl Scout & CHKD sewing event held March 9th. There were 76 girl scouts present aged 5-13 years old and they completed 187 squares. This event will run twice a year with the next sew-in scheduled for October. More volunteers are sought to assist in this worthwhile event. Pam assured us that the scouts are split up into two sessions, with each session broken down by age and skill level. Congrats also go out to the three young members in our chapter that assisted in the event. 7) There will be a quilt raffle from April 14-19th with tickets sold at the Norfolk NEX. Diane Beavers donated the quilt with all proceeds going to the QOV foundation. 8) A card of appreciation, a group of friendship squares, and flowers were presented to Siri Hoover at the meeting. Siri is moving to North Carolina this month. She will be sorely missed. TQG s Sew What May 2014 Page 9

11 Vendor Chair, Jennifer Griffin has recruited 15 vendors to display, demonstrate and sell their wares. More vendors are waiting in the wings in case any of the original 15 cancel; we cannot accommodate all the vendors who have applied to participate! What a delightful problem! Bring your shopping bags!! The Silent Auction promises to be incredible. So many quilting necessities are being collected by Guild members, and all those treasures will be in baskets waiting for your bid. There will also be fabulous door prizes which have been collected over several months. The Quilt Show Committee Members are working very hard to make the vision we had last year become a reality this June. There have been bumps along the way, of course, and the long hours and hard work continue to be very demanding. These ladies have devoted much energy to this endeavor. Plan to give an encouraging word to these folks as we enter the last stretch of this marathon race! And THANK YOU to the members whose names do not appear here but who are making significant contributions when asked by the committee members. 14 2nd Vice President Programs (Ann Walls ) PROGRAM: The registration form for Charlotte Angotti s workshop is attached. See below for details of her workshop and presentations. Registration for the workshop will be open to TQG members only until May 31. Other registrants may send in forms and if there are any openings, they will be processed by the postmark date. CURRENT SCHEDULE JUNE Sue Reich will present two trunk shows and presentations on WWI and WWII quilts. This is the centennial year for WWI quilts so it is a timely presentation. We were hoping to have an after school workshop following the Day Chapter but she has to be in Texas on Thursday. AUGUST Charlotte Angotti is returning to conduct a Saturday workshop (August 9) and presentations to both the Day and Night Chapters. She owned a quilt shop in this area several years ago. Please schedule your vacation around this workshop and save your pennies. The workshop is called Let Me Surprise You. She will provide a laser cut kit for the participants; so, there will be no pre-cutting/preparation for the workshop just bring basic sewing supplies. I hear it is very popular at the Houston show and sells out fast. That s the good news; the bad news is that the kit costs $95 and is due at the time of registration. I thought long and hard about offering this class but when looking at the cost of fabric and in my own case, I sometimes spend more than I would have if I had just gotten the kits. Charlotte can t give us dimensions because it is all a surprise but tells me that her patterns are easily enlarged if you want a different size. There are samples on her web site of previous class projects. Her presentations are: Night Chapter, Why Aren t You Making More Quilts? I know you have the fabric. ; Day Chapter: Surprise Yourself! The book, the quilts and all the fun of the method. NOVEMBER Sara Bliss Wright will be making PowerPoint presentations to the Day and Night Chapter. She is not a quilter but has thoroughly researched quilts and quilting. I saw her presentation at the AQSG seminar in Charleston and immediately thought our members would want to hear of her findings. Night Chapter: The Mt. Ida Quilt Project: One Community, Two Quilts, Three Centuries ; Day Chapter: Alabama Cotton and Bemis Bags: Pieced into quilt History (this is the one I saw and it tracks the history of how feeds sack fabrics were started manufactured and stopped). MARCH Suzi Parron will has published two books on barn quilts and she will present slide shows of barns and the stories behind the quilts. I have been following her on Facebook and they are gorgeous.
