3 About: Doug Stainbrook Doug Stainbrook Solid Edge Field Support Team Leader Doug Stainbrook is the team leader for the Solid Edge Field Support team. Before joining the Solid Edge team, Doug spent 10 years as a product designer in the jig and fixture, automated machinery, plastic product, and injection mold design industries. In 1999, he became a Solid Edge Application Engineer in Pennsylvania, traveling the U.S. East coast, supporting resellers with Solid Edge demonstrations and pre-sales support. In 2000, Doug moved to Huntsville, Alabama, home of Solid Edge development to work in the Field Support group. Page 3

4 What you will learn As you probably already know, Solid Edge is a great tool for designing a final product. But did you know it is also a great tool for marketing your product? This marketing could include trying to sell your end product to the public, or internally within the company, to get buy-in on a new design idea. In this session we will explore how to use Solid Edge to better communicate your product s technical details. We will also take a look at how you can have your product portfolio with you at all times through mobile devices. You will learn how to gauge a wider audience s interest with social media and how to generate materials to advertise your product. Page 4

5 The goal is to create animations of mechanisms and exploded views to show internal components and how they are assembled. Can be used for Internal communications to get buy-in on a new idea. Can be used to excite customers about a new product. Create photo-realistic renderings inside of KeyShot We will apply realistic materials, add a background image, and change the lighting to create stunningly realistic images. Page 5

6 Open..\Electric Razor\ ElectricRazor.asm Change the configuration to 01-Mechanism From the view tab, Sharpen the model to smooth the circular edges. Set the perspective by pressing CTRL+SHIFT and scrolling the middle mouse button. Page 6

7 Notice there is a motor saved in the PathFinder. Simulate the existing motor in the assembly. Play the animation Click the select tool to exit the animation Page 7

8 Change the configuration to 00-All Parts. From the Tools tab, select the ERA environment. Change the configuration to EXPLODE. Use Auto-Explode to explode the Blade Drive subassembly. Page 8

9 Reposition the Clutch Select the Spring as the target to position the Clutch above the Spring. Rename all of the new explode events (xxx-exp) Manually explode the Trimmer Switch Retainer from the Trimmer Flipper face Drag the Trimmer Switch Retainer to create a jog through the back housing Change the perspective to 35mm Page 9

10 Reposition the Clutch Select the Spring as the target to reposition the Clutch above the Spring. Page 10

11 Drag the Clutch to using the Drag Component command. To the right along Y and then up along Z. Notice the jog is added automatically. Click Esc to exit the Drag command. Page 11

12 Rename the 5 new explode events in the PathFinder Right click on each Event entry and select Rename (xxx-exp) Manually explode the Trimmer Switch Retainer from the Trimmer Flipper face at a distance of mm. Use Drag Component to drag the Trimmer Switch Retainer to create a jog through the back housing. Page 12

13 Set the perspective by pressing CTRL+SHIFT and scrolling the middle mouse button. UPDATE (save) the EXPLODE configuration! Page 13

14 Go into the Animation Editor. Click OK to Update the animation Note the timeline of events. Play the animation. Note the sequence issues. The gear assembly explodes through the head assembly. The internal components explode before the back of the body explodes from the front. Page 14

15 Drag the new xxx-exp events in the Timeline to the correct the sequencing issues. Drag the Gear-EXP to start at Frame 122. Drag Spring-EXP to start immediately after the Gear-EXP event. Drag the Clutch-EXP s to start after the Spring-EXP Page 15

16 Scroll down to the Back Group Explosion in the timeline. Drag the animation bar along the timeline to see the sequence of events. Note that the Back group explosion doesn t start until frame 207. Drag the entire Back Group Explosion event back to start at Frame 140 when the motor begins to explode. Minimize the timeline Go to start and play the animation. Page 16

17 Note the animation can be saved as a movie and even sent to KeyShot to be rendered. Exit ERA Click Yes to save the changes to the animation. Play the animations of the explosion Page 17

18 Solid Edge assemblies can be saved in a format to be viewed on Android and IOS tablets and phones. Solid Edge Mobile Viewer App is available on the Google Play and Apple stores. Page 18

19 You can even upload models and animations directly from Solid Edge to YouTube! Log into your YouTube user account. Add your information. Page 19

20 Send the model to KeyShot to create photo-realistic images. Set the size and the output quality. From the Paint>Gloss folder in the Material Library, drag Gloss Sapphire Blue onto both halves of the razor body. Drag Gloss Black onto the Switch and Trimmer Base. From the Metal>Chrome>Basic folder, drag Polished Chrome onto the Head Cover. Page 20

21 From the Mold-Tech > Pebble folder drag Mold-Tech 8017 onto the grip area. From the Environments tab in the Studio folder drag 3 Panels Tilted into the graphics area. Page 21

22 In the Project window, select the Environment tab. Set the Background to Color > White. Drag the rotation wheel to see the lighting change angles dynamically. Now Click Backplate image. Select the Bathroom image from the Bkgrnds folder. Page 22

23 From the Camera tab, change the Perspective/Focal Length to 35. CONGRATUALTIONS! Page 23
