Tech check & linguo Before we get started, let s get techy and go through a quick technology check and some of the key terms used in the CoSpaces Edu creation interface. How does CoSpaces Edu work? The CoSpaces Edu web application works on any desktop or laptop with the latest Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser, including Google Chromebooks. The CoSpaces Edu mobile app also lets you create on a tablet device and view your creations on a smartphone. On mobile devices you have the option to go into VR, AR or gyroscope mode to experience your scenes. CoSpaces Edu in the browser In order to use CoSpaces Edu, you need to be using a browser that supports WebGL. We recommend using the latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. CoSpaces Edu on ios and Android The CoSpaces Edu app runs on ios 8 or Android 4.4 and higher. In order to experience CoSpaces Edu scenes in VR, AR or gyro mode your device must have a built-in gyroscope sensor. Network access requirements Some schools have firewalls that CoBlock certain domains and might prevent you from accessing CoSpaces Edu. In order to resolve this, it is necessary to allow all of the domains needed to access CoSpaces Edu's online platform and app. For more technical info, view our Tech Check on cospaces.io/edu/tech-check Essential terms Space - A space refers to any project created in CoSpaces Edu and contains one or multiple Scenes. Stage - The creation area in a scene, surrounded by an Environment. Grid - The grid helps you place objects precisely on the stage using snapping. Got it? So you ll have 0 problem saying that you create on the stage, using the grid, in a scene that s inside a space Right?!

Part 2 Creating like a
Creating your first space To start creating, go to: This is where your creations will all be stored! You can start by exploring the Welcome space to get familiar with the basics. To set up your first space, click: Your first step is to choose the type of space you d like to start building in. You can create an AR/VR space that you ll be able to explore in Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR). You can also build a MERGE Cube space to project onto the MERGE Cube in AR.
Creating an AR/VR space First, choose a type of scene for your AR/VR space. You can build on a 3D stage inside of the environment of your choice. This type of scene can be viewed in VR and AR. You can also build upon your own 360 image that you upload. This type of scene can be viewed in VR. When you create a new scene, you build from scratch on a large canvas with a grid.
Setting-up your first scene To start creating your first scene, start by selecting the 3D environment or the 360 image you d like to use as the background. To choose an environment, click the Environment tab at the bottom: If you re creating inside a 3D environment, click Edit and choose one of the pre-defined 3D environments: You can then define different moods for your environment in the Mood section: If you re building upon a 360 image, click Edit and upload a 360 image.
The 3D camera The 3D camera at the center of your scene lets you define the perspective from which your scene can be explored. You can choose from several camera movements to change the way in which you experience your creation. To change the camera movement, click on: Fixed - You are fixed to a certain position and can only look around your scene using your mouse or keyboard arrows. Walk - You walk in the scene using your keyboard arrows or WASD keys. You use your mouse to look around. Fly - You fly above the scene using your keyboard arrows or WASD and QE keys to change height. You use your mouse to look around. Orbit - You move in a circle on a zone that you define around the center of your scene, using your mouse, keyboard arrows or WASD keys.
Creating a MERGE Cube space The MERGE Cube add-on is required to create your own MERGE Cube spaces. When you open a MERGE Cube space, you ll find a virtual MERGE Cube at the center of the stage. Simply build your creation on and around the MERGE Cube as you d like it to look when you explore it in AR. You can unlock the cube to move it around and place content anywhere you like. To create inside of the cube, click View inside : You can change the cube s material and its opacity in:
Using the Pro Library Time to start creating! In the Library, you ll find many 3D objects and 3D characters that you can simply drag and drop onto the stage. Every object in the Library can be moved, rotated or resized and edited to change its colors. Characters can also be animated in the Animation category.. Building CoBlocks are available in: These let you easily model anything from scratch!
Importing external files You can import various types of external files into your creations. To import an external file, click: You can upload: - images including GIFs and 360 images - 3D models (.obj,.stl,.fbx) - sound files The number of uploads is unlimited in Pro and limited to 10 external files in CoSpaces Edu Basic. You can even directly search for 3D objects from Google Poly! Enter the type of object you re looking for in the Search bar: Browse through the 3D models available and simply drag and drop any object into your scene!
Part 3 Coding like a
CoBlocks CoBlocks is a block-based programming language that lets you drag and drop blocks to write your code. A CoBlock represents a snippet of code, or statement, which tells CoSpaces Edu to do something like starting a specific action in the scene. You can find the Code editor in the top-right toolbar: To open the CoBlocks coding editor, select the CoBlocks icon: The empty space on the right is the CoBlocks workspace. The list with CoBlocks on the left is the CoBlocks toolbox. To program an item with CoBlocks, enable its use in CoBlocks. To do this, select the object you d like to use in your code, click Name, and activate Use in CoBlocks.
CoBlocks has two main kind of CoBlocks: Expression and Statement CoBlocks. Statement CoBlocks Statement CoBlocks often perform a specific action. For example, you can make an item talk, using the say CoBlock. Expression CoBlocks Expression CoBlocks contain values. These values can be: Colors (red, green, blue) Numbers like 5 and 0.25 Strings like "Hi there!" Other items in the scene Expression CoBlocks can be recognized by their round shape and are always placed into other CoBlocks. To continue learning how to code with CoBlocks and truly become a CoBlocks Pro, download the complete CoBlocks Reference Guide.
Scripting While most CoSpaces Edu spaces are created with the visual programming language CoBlocks, the platform also gives you access to scripting for more advanced coding. The two advanced scripting languages available for coding in CoSpaces Edu are JavaScript and TypeScript. To open the Script coding editor, select the Script icon: Each method contains a code sample and a demo project. The API documentation can be found here.
Physics engine CoSpaces Edu Pro has a built-in physics engine, letting you use real-life physics in your virtual spaces. To use the physics feature, right click on an object and open: Activate physics in your scene by turning on the Physics switch. This will enable real-world properties such as gravity in your scene. You can also define the physics properties of any 3D object in your scene. These include object Mass, Friction and Bounciness. You can also play with more advanced properties like collision precision and define whether an object should be set static. To go further with Physics, use CoBlocks from the Physics category:
Part 4 Mastering VR, AR and more
Exploring spaces The magic with CoSpaces Edu is that you can explore your creations in many impressive ways, including VR, AR and even projecting onto the MERGE Cube! Play mode To explore a space on any device, simply use the Play mode, letting you view your scene full-screen and move around it. To open a space in Play mode, simply click: To move on a computer, use your mouse and the arrows or WASD on your keyboard, like you would in a PC video game. To move on a tablet, use touch with one finger on the arrow. Gyro mode With a tablet or a smartphone and the CoSpaces Edu mobile app, you can explore your creations using the Gyro mode by moving the device itself as if you were looking at the space through your screen. Open a space in Play mode on a tablet or smartphone and select Gyro :
The Virtual Reality mode 3D creations are even more fun when you explore them in Virtual Reality! You ll quickly realize the power of VR and the new dimension it brings to the student learning experience. Your creations can be explored in VR using the Oculus Go, ClassVR headsets, or with a mobile VR headset, as basic as a cardboard viewer. Mobile VR To experience your creations with mobile VR, open the CoSpaces Edu mobile app on your ios or Android smartphone. You can also use a Samsung Gear VR headset and the CoSpaces Edu Gear VR app. Open the space in Play mode: Click the VR goggles icon at the bottom of your screen: Your space is ready to be viewed in VR when it shows 2 screens, one for each eye. Place your phone in your mobile VR headset and get immersed into your creations!
The Augmented Reality mode Spaces created in a 3D environment can be projected onto the real world as AR. Using an AR-compatible smartphone or tablet, open the space you d like to explore in AR with the CoSpaces Edu mobile app. Open the space in Play mode: Click the AR icon at the bottom-right of your screen: Scan your surroundings with your phone to let it detect a surface to project your scene on. It will show a purple rectangle when the scene can be placed. You ll need a flat surface for this and try to avoid plain colors and shiny surfaces! Tap the purple rectangle to place your scene! You can then resize the scene or rotate it and move around it with your phone or tablet.
The MERGE Cube mode MERGE Cube spaces can be projected onto the MERGE Cube in Augmented Reality (AR) using the MERGE Cube mode. In the CoSpaces Edu Gallery, the MERGE Cube spaces are indicated with this icon: To view a MERGE Cube space, open it with the CoSpaces Edu mobile app, using your smartphone or tablet. Open the space in Play mode: You ll automatically get to the MERGE Cube mode. Hold the MERGE Cube in one hand and place it in front of your device s camera as shown in the picture. You may have to move the MERGE Cube around before it s detected by your device.
