I am a professional Non-Executive Director and CEO with thirty years of board, committee and senior executive experience across the public, commercial and not-for-profit sectors including maritime, oil and gas, resources, financial services, environment, safety and technology sectors. AICD members recently re-elected me to WA Division Council for a second term. Alongside current directorships, I am a consultant advisor to the World Bank. Previously I was CEO of NOPSEMA, a senior executive with Woodside and CEO of two superannuation providers. There are many challenges facing the health insurance industry, which operates in a heavily regulated environment where government policies influence what individual funds can control. But doing all that is possible to ensure the affordability for members continues to be the biggest challenge and focus for the Board. As a practitioner over the years I have provided a variety of services to corporate clients, including those in the not-for-profit sector. These services have included external & internal audit, risk management, corporate tax, indirect tax & broad business advisory covering strategic planning, financing, & business structuring. Fortunately, our Employees are more engaged and our relations with the Community and Regulators are fruitful. Still, we have to be vigilant in some areas and lift our game in others examples: The average age of patients admitted to hospital in NSW has increased by more than 4 years over the past two decades. Because older people on average require more expensive care, this means that we have to spend a lot more money per patient to maintain current service levels per patient. Financial prudence is required. Meanwhile, our Management Expenses grew by 13.0% in FY17 1 this is more than double what our membership base is growing at 6.0% - if we do not reverse this course then we will have less funds to pay out on our insurance claims. To control costs and maintain service levels, I will draw on my work consulting to AXA, IAG and NRMA allowing me to review and enhance our operational efficiencies. My University education (incl. Harvard University) will help too.
