3 News Around the State Page 3 Notes From Kenai HBA We are happy to report that building activity remains strong here on the Kenai Peninsula, in both residential and commercial areas. In addition to new housing, our new Wal-Mart is rapidly being built and will provide a source of employment as well as a great tax base for our city and borough. We were very pleased to host Elliot Eisenberg, and would like to thank our friends at the Interior Alaska Building Association for their efforts in organizing his Alaskan tour. His report clearly showed the positive impact our housing industry has on the Kenai Peninsula s economy, and throughout the entire Kenai Peninsula Borough. In addition to a being a special guest on our local morning radio program, our members at the Peninsula Clarion published a report of his findings. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting such an enthusiastic tourist his love for our beautiful state and people was clearly evident. We had great success this past year with our Kenai Peninsula Construction Academy, and have recently submitted our 2010 project plan in cooperation with our community partners. In addition to carpentry, plumbing, weatherization, welding, and electrical classes, it is our hope to begin offering advanced courses. We are proud to be a part of such a successful, vital program that will provide our industry with individuals that are trained and qualified. Our annual family picnic will be held at the Soldotna Creek Park on the banks of the Kenai River on Saturday, August 1 st. We are anticipating another great event, and invite our friends from across the state to travel to the Kenai to join us. We can promise lots of great food, good company, and fun and games for kids of all ages. Don t forget your fishing pole! Best wishes to our members across Alaska for a safe and productive building season. We are looking forward to the ASHBA Convention and hope to see you in Juneau! Notes From Ketchikan HBA President Jim Byron implemented an Annual Halibut Derby. The derby week-ends are July 11 & 12 and July 18 & 19, am to 7 pm. We will hold our Annual Family Summer Picnic and Award of Derby prizes July 25, pm Ward Lake. The Derby will be community event and the funds will be used for local scholarship money. We gave away our first scholarship last week to a young man with a family who will train in ventilation and refrigeration. He plans to return to Ketchikan to work with one of our Associate members when he is finished with school in The Ketchikan Construction Academy year ended in May with a Meet and Greet Ceremony at the University with Borough Mayor Dave Kiffer and Representative Kyle Johansen as guest speakers. 14 students graduated. We are well on the way to employment for all of them. Our Association signed on as a sponsor with the Federal Small Business Apprenticeship Program. We have 6 builders sharing up to two apprentices. We have one apprentice in place at this time. He is one of our KCA graduates. Our 2009 Builder s Guide and Consumer Directory is finished and distributed. This year s Directory is better than ever. We were very pleased to be able to have our front and back covers both inside and out, in full color this year. We also expanded the directory by 4 pages. We have set the date for our Annual Holiday and Appreciation Event for December 12, We will hold this at Annabelle s at 6:00 pm. Our Bi-Annual Trade Show has been scheduled for February 26-28, 2010 at the Ted Ferry Civic Center. We will host Continuing Education Classes at this time as well. Pamela Roth Cindy Heaverley Notes From Mat-Su HBA No report submitted. Jennifer Coker Notes From Interior HBA No report submitted.
