Our next meeting of the year will be held at the Country Club of Tuscaloosa at noon on Tuesday, March 21, Our speaker will be Stephen DeWitt, newly retired Group Controller for New York Times Regional Newspaper Group, whose topic will be A Career in Controllership. This is a meeting you do not want to miss. Thanks to Julie Frizzell, Robin Mangham and Debbi Besant who attended the Gulf South Council s seminar entitled Accounting & Performance Improvement: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The seminar was very well attended and I invite you to contact me or any of the other attendees from our chapter to find out more. This seminar was somewhat of a prelude to our next seminar to be held on May 19 in Orange Beach. The title of this seminar is Lean Accounting for Lean Organizations Lean is something that is in the forefront of much management thinking in the Southeast basically due to the auto business. Yours truly is teaching one of the first classes in Lean at the University of Alabama this semester. Attend this seminar and see what all the hoopla is about. Lean is not just for manufacturing. It can be applied in any arena of business. See elsewhere in this newsletter for further information and a registration form. On the National side, see information elsewhere in this newsletter concerning the National Conference to be held in June. If you do not currently read a copy of the Tuscaloosa Business Ink, this would be a good month to start. There is an article on your professional business organization the IMA. See page 27 of the March edition. If you do not receive this publication or cannot find it at the local outlets (banks, real estate offices), me and I will get a copy mailed to you. And remember that all activities of your chapter are presented with you in mind and we value your input and suggestions. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School and UA School of Accountancy, and completed the CPA certificate. After 5 years in public accounting and IRS work, Stephen joined the newspaper business with the Tuscaloosa News as Controller in The company was later bought by the New York Times Company. Stephen moved to Lakeland Florida as Controller from , then to Atlanta to become CFO of the 32 newspaper group in 1992, and has remained in that position until his retirement at the end of He s married to Tricia DeWitt of Atlanta, GA, has 3 children, 2 of whom have graduated from U of A. Stephen concentrated his career in general controllership, budgeting, forecasting, newspaper operations, and financial reporting in a division of a public company. His hobbies are boating, lake watching, and Bama football. Traditional performance measurements are harmful to lean because they motivate non-lean behavior.
