He was a member of York REC , and was Chair of York REC Since 2009, he has been Lead Clinician for Research and Development at York Hospital. Main areas of interest are research ethics, research study design, and critical appraisal. His clinical research is mainly in the area of head and neck oncology and thyroid disease. Andrew sits on the Board of the CLRN, and is a member of their Executive committee. He is also the area CLRN specialty lead for ENT. Damon is the R&D Manager for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He has been working in NHS R&D Management since 1999, first at Barts and the London and then, since 2003, in York. Damon has a broad brief covering most areas of research management and governance. He manages a small team within the R&D Unit responsible for the processing of all new research study applications and amendments and works closely with the R&D Unit s Finance Manager to ensure that research income and expenditure are appropriately accounted for. He also acts as the Trust s Intellectual Property link working with the Trust s IP advisors (Medipex). As well as being a member of the R&D Group Damon is also a member of the Trust s York Clinical Research Facility Steering Group and the North and East Yorkshire Comprehensive Local Research Network s Member Organisation R&D Manager s Group. Deborah has a Biochemistry degree and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She held a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Wellcome/CRC Institute in Cambridge until She then went on to work in the Scientific Department at the Cancer Research Campaign (now Cancer Research UK) where she was responsible for the Studentship and Fellowship Programmes. Deborah then moved to a position at the Wellcome Trust as Programme Officer for Biomedical Ethics. After a career break Deborah joined the Research and Development Unit at York Hospital in 2005 as a Research Adviser providing research support and advice. Christine s clinical background is in physiotherapy although her working experience has been very broad, In addition to working as a paediatric physiotherapist she has been a researcher and a lecturer, most recently in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton. Here she taught evidence based practice and research methods to undergraduates and postgraduate health professionals and was programme director for an MSc in the management of childhood disability. She currently works in the Research and Development department at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust providing research support, advice and education to staff within the Trust. She is a Good Clinical Practice Facilitator for the National Institute for Health Research and from she was a member of a Technology Appraisal Committee at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. She has experienced life as a research participant, having taken part in a drug trial as an NHS patient. An economist by background, Sue Final has worked at the University of York for over 20 years in the capacity of Intellectual Property Manager. Her remit covers negotiation of research contracts, protection and commercialisation of intellectual property and sponsorship of research involving human subjects, both clinical and non-clinical. 1
2 Six Co-opted Health Professional Members Ms Jax Westmoreland Professor Ian Watt Mr Mathew Giles Dr Jonathan Wilson Jax is a principal pharmacist based at Scarborough hospital but with management responsibility for the pharmacy aspects of Clinical Trials and Research at both the York and Scarborough sites. She has more than 20 years experience of pharmaceutical quality assurance gained in both hospital and industrial settings, and has managed a medicines information service for the past 15 years where she has gained valuable experience of evaluating medical literature, including published clinical trials. Ian trained in medicine at the Universities of St Andrews and Manchester. Following qualification he specialised in general practice and public health, and has worked in a number of different settings both in the UK and abroad. He works at the University of York as Professor of Primary Care in the Department of Health Sciences and the Hull York Medical School (HYMS). In addition to his university posts, he continues to work as a GP and is a Honorary Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Mathew is a general surgeon at York Teaching Hospital with an interest in Upper GI and laparoscopic surgery. He is the clinical lead for upper GI and HBP cancer and bariatric surgery. He completed a PhD at The Molecular Medicine Unit, University of Leeds in viral gene therapy development. Dr Jonathan Wilson undertook undergraduate training at St. Andrews and Manchester Universities, followed by anaesthetic training initially in the Royal Army Medical Corps, then in the Yorkshire region. In the last 18 years as a Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Wilson has maintained research interests in improving outcomes for high-risk surgical patients, particularly with regard to strategies of optimising oxygen delivery and tissue perfusion, and identifying high-risk patients. Over the last 12 years has established a cardio-pulmonary exercise testing service to assess risk in patients scheduled for major surgery. Current research interests include the role of dopexamine in surgical patients, a double-blind randomised trial of colloid versus crystalloid in colorectal surgical patients, and aspects of cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Regularly performing peer review of submitted articles for the BJA and Critical Care, and is a founding faculty member for the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing for Pre-Operative Assessment Course, recently held for the third time. Dr Wilson is currently Lead Clinician for Anaesthetics at York Hospital. 2
3 Professor John MacFie Ms Sarah Kent John MacFie is a Consultant Surgeon employed by the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and based in Scarborough. He has a personal Chair with the University of Hull and is affiliated to the Academic Surgical Unit, Castle Hill, Cottingham, Hull. He was President of the Association of Surgeons of GB and Ireland (ASGBI) from 2010 to He is now Chairman of the Surgical Forum of GB and Ireland. His speciality interest is colorectal with a specific commitment to the management of patients with intestinal failure and those with inflammatory bowel disease. He maintains an active interest in nutrition and metabolism, ethics and the care of the critically ill. John MacFie has received a number of prizes and research grants over the years. In 1996 he was awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, was the recipient of the John F Kinney prize for Nutrition and Metabolism in 2001, the British Journal of Surgery editorial John Farndon prize in 2003 and the ASGBI Moynihan prize in both 2005 and He has written over 200 papers and many book chapters. Particular research interests include energy metabolism in surgical patients, the utilisation of fat emulsions, the definition of gut function, the ethics of nutritional support and gut barrier function. He has worked in many roles including Regional Advisor and Programme Director for General Surgery in Yorkshire, external examiner for many Medical Schools, and was member of the Court of Examiners for RCS England. He has supervised numerous higher degrees and is Director of the Postgraduate MSc Programme in the University of Hull. He has served as a Governor of BUPA Foundation and was recently elected a fellow of the James IV Association. He holds Honorary Fellowships with the Royal College Surgeons of Edinburgh as well as the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He is also a Registered Nutritionist. Sarah is currently the Lead NCRN Research Nurse for the Humber & Yorkshire Coast Cancer Research Network based at Scarborough Hospital. She has worked in Oncology/Haematology clinical research for 11 years and established a successful and developing service at Scarborough. The team recruit into a wide range of portfolio studies and have a growing commercial study portfolio. As well as managing teams and the Network strategically, she is also a recruiting nurse involved in multi-tumour site clinical trials, which keeps her in touch with the patients and workforce on a day to day basis. Prior to research she worked as on numerous wards including general medicine, surgery, coronary care, stroke unit and acute assessment unit at both Scarborough & Malton Hospitals. She has been a registered nurse 20 years and have completed two degrees in health related subjects. She sits on numerous forums across the country and region which focus on Workforce Development and Training for research personnel and represents the NCRN on the CLRN Lead Nurses group. She has previous experience on being a member of an LREC and local R&D Committee and is passionate about clinical research. 3
4 Six co-opted lay members Mrs Helen Jones Dr Martin Knight Dr Leonardo Guevara (Vice- Chairman) Mr Clive Tiney Mrs Rosemary Anderton Mr Chris Chambers Helen spent most of her early working life in London where she spent many years as teacher of modern languages and Head of Pastoral Care in a number of comprehensive schools. She retrained in counselling and psychotherapy and worked in further education for a few years before joining the Centre for Personal Construct Psychology as partner and Director of Training and Education. During this time she was involved in work with clients, both individual and organisational and the organisational work became very interesting to her. In 1987 she moved to York. Soon after she started to work with Yorkshire Regional Health Authority as Organisational Development Specialist developing a series of leadership development programmes for doctors, managers and other professionals in the NHS in Yorkshire. Later the work she had developed was transferred into the University of York where for a few years she ran a Centre for Leadership Development. On her retirement in 2003 she returned to work as a psychotherapist. She also supervises Diploma students studying Personal Construct Psychology. Being a lay member of the Research and Development Group has helped her stay in touch with work in the NHS and she very much values this involvement. Martin retired in 1996 after a career in university teaching, research and administration. He then served for about eight years on a prison Independent Monitoring Board. Shortly after leaving that he joined the predecessor Committee of the R&D Group, being immediately catapulted into the chair. In between he has served as a charity trustee, a community transport volunteer and has researched into family history and the 1918 influenza pandemic. Leo Guevara is a senior lecturer in Food Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. He has a degree and PhD in Food Science from Leeds University. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology and Chartered Scientist. He is fluent in French and Spanish. He worked in the food industry in research and development functions with blue-chip food manufacturers and retailers. Leo s experience in academia includes the posts of senior lecturer, Head of a food technology transfer centre and business account manager for workforce development. He has been lead academic for three knowledge transfer partnerships. He is external examiner at Northumbria University and has been external examiner at the University of Nottingham, Manchester Metropolitan and Salford Universities. His research interest is the biochemistry of food plant components and their effects on health. Clive is an IT Consultant with IBM. After taking a degree in Biology he took a MSC in Biology and Computing at University of York and has worked in computing for the last 30 years. He is a member the Society of Biology and a Chartered Biologist as well as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP). He has worked in hospitals and health authorities in the past and is currently a member of the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Rosemary has a degree in Microbiology and a MA in Health Care Ethics. She has been a teacher of secondary students at various schools in and around York all her working life. She started off teaching biology and chemistry; then A level psychology and more recently became a dyslexia support specialist. She is also on the senior team for A level psychology marking with a major examination board. She was a lay member of the York research ethics committee for five years before its closure. Chris retired in 2005 after a career as an Army logistician. Shortly after retirement he gained an MA in Railway Studies and Transport History at The University of York, but has diversified his interests and activities since. The MA research led to him being asked to research and then register chancel repair liability for his local church, but this activity has since expanded and he now acts as a North of England unpaid consultant on chancel repair liability. Chris is also a member of both the Parish Council and Village Hall Committee in Strensall. He also sits on the Foss Internal Drainage Board and the Wilkinson, Cobb and Hodge Trust, which supports the local primary school. Other interests cover both military and railway history and he is an active member of the Western Front Association. He is seriously addicted to heavy rock and has Planet Rock as a preset on the digital radio. 4
5 Three co-opted academic members Professor Yvonne Birks Mrs Alison Booth (Chairman) Dr Rhian Gabe (Statistician) Ms Ada Keding Yvonne Birks is Professor of Health and Social Care in the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York. Prior to this appointment, Yvonne was a senior research fellow in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York where she was the Deputy Director of the Research Design Service for Yorkshire and Humber and the York Trials Unit. She worked as paediatric intensive care nurse before gaining her BSc and DPhil in Psychology and has been a health services researcher since She has worked on and led a number of projects in a variety of areas including, clinical trials, outcome measurement, communication in healthcare and quality and safety in healthcare. Alison is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York. She has extensive experience translating and presenting the findings of systematic reviews to a wide range of professional, research and lay audiences. Alison also manages PROSPERO, an international prospective register of systematic reviews, and the HTA database. Previous experience includes nearly 30 years as a radiographer in the NHS, and in clinical governance, promoting evidence based practice. Undertaking an MSc led her into the world of research. Alison also has experience on national research ethics, and research governance committees. Rhian is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Trials at Hull York MedicaI School. She has worked in clinical trials and epidemiology for over 15 years. She is based in York Trials Unit at the University of York where she provides statistical advice and leads trial teams working in a diverse range of health areas such as management of venous leg ulcers and treatments for depression. Her work involves bringing together the knowledge of a range of experts from different specialisations to help identify key research questions, design and conduct new studies. Rhian s major research interests include cancer therapy, diagnosis and screening. Ada is a statistician in the York Trials Unit at the University of York. She is the trial statistician on a number of musculoskeletal and mental health trials, advising on statistical aspects of trial design and conduct as well as carrying out and reporting trial analyses. Ada has a background in Psychology and has previously worked for the Psychosocial Oncology and Clinical Practice Research Group at the University of Leeds. (covering Rhian Gabe s maternity leave) 5
