The UK immigration system must support the retention, access and movement of those who lead, undertake and support research and innovation including: Highly skilled people e.g. researchers, engineers, academics, business founders (characteristics include PhD level roles, Chartered Engineer status). Specialist technicians e.g. data analysts, cell culture specialists, Artificial Intelligence experts. Students including undergraduate, postgraduate taught and PhD students. Dependants of these individuals

26 Updates in establishing the UK DRI Director: Bart De Strooper COO: Adrian Ivinson 6 centres appointed across the UK, each with an associate director 27 foundation programmes begin autumn 2017 across the 6 centres Recruitment campaign is currently underway for Professors and Fellows, to double the capacity at each centre Refurbishment and upgrading of laboratory space is progressing across the centres Operational headquarters team, based at the hub UCL, will be created by early 2018 When in full operation, the UK DRI will host more than 400 staff, with an annual operating budget of more than 30 million UK DRI researchers will be supported by the very best tools and resources, with a culture that encourages high risk/reward science and a focus on drug targets and translation Throughout 2018, the UK DRI will continue to organise cross-centre scientific themes including some to fill gaps in the current research portfolio, such as Parkinson s disease. The institute will also establish collaborations with major UK institutes and clinical networks
27 ealth Data Research UK mproving Our Health Through Data Science Director: Professor Andrew Morris FRSE FMedSci HDR-UK will create a thriving, high-energy UK-wide network of inter-disciplinary research expertise that will disrupt traditional science and transcend disciplines by enabling new scientific discovery from large multi-dimensional datasets and the application of new cuttingedge technologies to enhance decision making and improve healthcare. Call launched August 2017 HDR-UK will be a new type of health and biomedical research institute in the digital world.
28 Consortium At least 50m, 7yr+ managed programme to build new multidisciplinary research teams (consortia and networks) with linkage to users Core funders: Health departments, MRC, ESRC, EPSRC, Health Foundation, Wellcome, BHF First call launched end October 2017 Substantial long-term funding for systems approaches to prevention of non-communicable diseases addressing the upstream determinants like the built environment, education, transport, and communication systems Co-developed research with policy makers, practitioners inc. industry (guidance being drawn up) for translation Capitalise on emerging technologies, big data, social media and discovery research Methodological innovation

31 UK Government s Industrial Strategy The objective of our modern industrial strategy is to improve living standards and economic growth by increasing productivity and driving growth across the whole country. Underpinned by 23bn National Productivity Investment Fund, of which there will be a 4.7bn investment in science, research and innovation over four years. To be delivered through UKRI Part of this is the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund: to progress R&D focussed challenges across emerging and incumbent sectors 2.9bn yet to be allocated

33 Skills and the industrial strategy March Spring Budget - Chancellor announced Industrial Strategy associated investment in skills (across all research areas) 90m for 1000 additional PhD places (~85% in STEM disciplines) MRC received 118 PhD studentships, which had been awarded to institutions across the UK in areas aligned with the industrial strategy 210m for capacity building at early/mid-career level aligned to industry strategy MRC has received 37.5m Rutherford Fund: 50m plus 50m from existing international funds to attract researchers from emerging research powerhouses such as India, China, Brazil
