2 II. III. The January 23, 2017 meeting minutes were approved unanimously. Financial Report: Kenny Dean reported the bank balances of: Beginning Balance (Through 1/23/2017): $7, Ending Balance (Through 02/21/2017): $7, Debits totaling $ included expenses relative to the Chamber Mixer January 12, 2017 and website domain name fees. IV. Old Business: a. Website Update ( John Hansen reminded all that the website is constantly changing with additions to the calendar of events. All KAMMA meeting dates are posted within the calendar as well as the minutes for recent meetings. John encouraged the membership to utilize the calendar for their events as well. b. Membership Update: John Hansen presented membership certificates to many of the member representatives attending today s meeting. John expressed gratitude to everyone for making the organization what it is and looked to grow the membership and add to the powerful voice of KAMMA. c. Training Update: Mechatronics / EMR Training March 2017: John Hansen gave a brief description of Mechatronics training and how this type training is vital to the manufacturing businesses within our area. The need has been identified and now the task is to work with providers to develop training to be made available to our local companies thirsting for this resource. Cascades Tissue is one company extremely interested in having staff trained and continues to lobby for this cause. John described details of the recent meeting with Mohave Community College (MCC) administrators discussing the idea of working with Northland Pioneer College (NPC) which has a Mechatronics Training Program in place presently along with having the Amatrol brand equipment which provides a very realistic training in the various skill sets within Mechatronics Training. MCC did express willingness to work with NPC to get the program to the manufacturers. John explained that this type training is responsive and that it differs from credit earning classes. There is also the possibility to offer Industrial Maintenance Technician training through this program. John reminded the group that bringing this training to our community will help contain the costs relative to travel, accommodations and basic expenses for the businesses. Mary Mendola, Workforce Program Supervisor for Arizona@Work offered all attending a flyer with information regarding the Medical First Responder Training Class to be held March at the KAA Administration building. The class will be held Monday through Friday from 7am till 4pm each day. Mary reminded everyone that it is possible the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act program (WIOA) could assist in offsetting the costs for eligible employees and encouraged businesses to contact her to explore those possibilities. John Hansen described to the group
3 how successful the first EMR class was and the details of how KAMMA helped organize that event. KAMMA as well gave each successful participant their own EMR kit to keep and stay prepared to exercise the lifesaving skills earned in the program. V. New Business a. Internship Coordination Committee Update: John Hansen reported that the Internship Coordination Committee has not had a meeting since meeting with MCC Administrators earlier in January. MCC was very supportive of the efforts being made by KAMMA to develop an Internship Program. John shared with the attending group the concept of building a web page on KAMMA s website exclusively to help link colleges and universities with companies looking for interns. This is one of the tasks that the committee is working toward to help gain traction in getting interns into our local manufacturing community. The first benefit is to the students looking for summer jobs. John indicated that if we were able to get the interns here that there would be a high possibility of getting them back for more intern work and obviously the possibility of putting graduates to work full time. This would definitely help local companies expand their work forces and create opportunities for students looking to return home and find lucrative jobs. John indicated that the committee is working diligently to learn more about existing networks that connect companies to interns and vice versa to help develop the program for us locally. b. Next Gen Sector Academy - Participation: John Hansen explained about a great experience he recently had participating in the Next Generation Sector Academy held in Phoenix on February 7 8, John was invited as an Industry Champion and Chairman of KAMMA to speak on a panel to the participants of the Academy. John was one of four sector partnership leaders participating at the Academy and was able to share the KAMMA story as well as take in other information relative to similar partnerships nationwide. At the end of the meeting John and the three other panelists were awarded a token check in the amount of $2,000 for each of the panel member s associations. John was humbled and gratified by the gesture and was certainly proud to bring this great news back home to the KAMMA Board and Membership. For more information about Next Generation Sector Partnerships as well as the Academy visit: c. City Council Movement on Economic Development: John Hansen welcomed Mayor Monica Gates and Councilman Travis Lingenfelter for attending and gave the floor to the Mayor. Mayor Gates indicated that there were challenges ahead and that the Council was considering ways to identify problems and look to take action to put in place an engine to keep moving forward. It is difficult to achieve forward progress with changes in direction every 2 years. It was noted that Council is
4 working to pull some vital committees back together again and aim to gain support from the business community and focus on long term strategic planning. Member Scott Bracket mentioned the possibility of having a tool to allow more engagement from business people with limited time but valuable input. Councilman Lingenfelter echoed the need for strategic planning and asked if KAMMA would work with the Transit Committee to bring people together, talk about challenges & problems and work toward solutions. The question was raised Is it possible to re-initialize transit at the Industrial Park? In the past the system was discontinued due to lack of ridership caused by limited drop & pick-up points and generally inconvenient routes within the Industrial Park. John Hansen applauded Mayor Gates and Councilman Lingenfelter for long term strategic thinking and recognition of current problems. John cautioned that there must be accountability and that there must be involvement as a whole. d. Partner Updates: KAA, JTED, MCC, Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce, Others: Bob Riley, Economic Development Director of the Kingman Airport Authority reported that the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 765 hosted the touring Aluminum Overcast B-17 at the Kingman Airport over the last weekend with a great turnout for the event. It was noted that 91 people flew in the plane and that was more than when it visited Deer Valley earlier. It was a great event and everything went very well. In other Industrial Park news Bob noted that the 50K square foot Telling Industries building was bought by a plastic injection molding company that looks to employ approximately people and manufacture plastic totes. It is a subsidiary of an Ohio firm. Robert Freeman, Corporate Education Manager at MCC reported that they have the Certified Production Technician (CPT) training classes up and running and are ready to begin classes. The CPT program teaches 5S principles, quality systems, maintenance and how to determine efficiencies. Mary Mendola added that there might be WOIA funds available for candidates looking to take the CPT classes. Robert noted that MCC was working with Tooling U, an online manufacturing training institute to possibly expand the training being offered here at MCC. Gregg Martin, President CEO of Kingman Area Chamber of Commerce stated that there is a very dynamic feeling to the Chamber s activities recently and that he hoped to keep the momentum moving forward. Gregg noted that the Business & Government Committee are looking forward to working with the new City Council on critical issues within our community. Gregg reminded the attending group of the Hollywood & Wine event to be held at the Beale Celebrations facility downtown Saturday night, February 25 th. This is an event that is a fundraiser for the Chamber but more importantly it is an event that
5 offers the opportunity for members to build friendships and encourage support for other businesses in our community. March 1 st is the State Chamber of Commerce Legislative Day and Lynne Petersen will join Gregg to travel to Phoenix and attend the event. Gregg encouraged all to share any ideas with them prior to the event. Lynne Petersen, Customer Relationship Manager for Unisource Energy Services offered a brief description of the three power outage events occurring recently since January. Lynne described how the primary power for the Industrial Park was supplied through the Industrial Park substation but could be supplied by two other substations, Jagerson substation and Eastern substation in the event the Industrial substation required maintenance. During the initial outage the Industrial substation had a breaker that didn t clear a fault. At that time power supply was shifted to the Jagerson substation to keep power to Industrial Park tenants. There were two additional outages occurring February 14 th and 15 th. These outages were relative to using some equipment has hadn t been used regularly and power was quickly restored. Lynne indicated that there would be continuing work to restore the main Industrial Park substation and that it would take a few weeks to execute the processes required to complete testing and move customer s power supply back to the Industrial substation. Beth VanHoose, CTE Assistant at Kingman High School notified the attending group that the Technical Skill & Trades Expo scheduled for April 5 th, 2017 was canceled and that it was to be re-scheduled later in the fall.
