1 School of Engineering & Applied Science Summer Career Plans Survey Class of 2013 University of Pennsylvania Career Services OVERVIEW Prepared by: Rosette Pyne Senior Associate Director February 2013 Each year the Career Services office surveys the Penn Engineering students to gather information about their summer work experience. Students scheduled to graduate in December 2012, May and August 2013 are included in this analysis. Career Services contacted each student by list-serve in August 2012 requesting that they complete the on-line survey. In October 2012, the Academic Programs Office of the School of Engineering and Applied Science sent the survey again to all applicable students. In December 2012, February and March 2013, personalized s were sent by Career Services to each student who had not yet responded. In addition, summer experiences were included from review of information reported in our online job applications system, PennLink. Information was collected for 395 students of the 427 eligible in the Class of This combination of data resulted in a 92.5% response rate. Again this year, the top industry sectors in which students accepted internships included higher education research labs/centers, financial services, manufacturing and technology. Within the manufacturing sector, the largest percentages of internships were in biomedical products, chemicals, aerospace, and computer products. 29% of students accepted engineering jobs (a 6% increase over last year), and of that group 52% had positions in research and development. Of those students reporting the date they received the internship offer they accepted, 42.3% received their offer prior to March 2012 and by the end of May 2012, 96% had accepted a position. This is very similar to last year. The overall average salary of the respondents who were employed full-time was $3,932 Summer per month 2012 Primary (an 8.9% Activity increase from the Class of 2012) and for those employed part-time, it was $1,153.
