3 Executive Summary: The U.S. VC activity across the country remains steady and strong between Q and Q The number of deals was 1,157 in Q4 17, decreased, vs 1,296 in Q Quarterly investments regressed from $19.2B in Q3 17 to $18.7B in Q VC investments and number of deals decreased slightly from last quarter. As in Q3 2017, VC investments are still geared toward established companies. - Expansion and later-stage companies accounted for 71% of total VC investments. Seed and early-stage companies accounted for 19%. - The number of deals indicates that mature companies tended to account for fewer VC deals (33%) but with a larger amount invested (Median U.S. later-stage deal size is $30M versus $6.5M for early-stage). - San Francisco Bay Area continues to be the dominant region for VC funding at all stages. California captured 48% of national investments in Q (vs 42% in Q3 2017). - California was distantly followed by New York with 15%, and Massachusetts with 11%.
4 Executive Summary: SF Bay Area San Francisco Bay Area continues to be the largest recipient of VC investment in the U.S. - 28% of national VC investment and 87% of California VC investment were in the Bay Area; followed by the New York metro area (15%) and New England (11%). - The Bay Area also had the largest number of deals of any US region, accounting for 357 out of 1,158 total US deals. - Despite the decline in the number of deals in the region, more VC investments went to the Bay Area. Mobile & Telecommunications was the most prevalent industry in VC funding. - Mobile & Telecommunications accounted for $2.5B of VC investments, followed by Internet ($2.3B), and Healthcare ($1.2B). Conclusions - Compared to last quarter - VC investments increased, while the number of deals decreased. - Mature startups continue to receive the majority of venture capital investments.

9 VC market in the SF Bay Area While the number of VC deals closed in the Bay Area has decreased from last quarter, the average deal value and the amount of VC money invested has increased. Globally, VC firms have favored bigger deals with established companies. Bay Area VC investments are on a positive trend due to a healthy macroeconomics environment, an anticipation of tax reduction and easy access to financing. 0 DEALS INVESTMENT $ 0 Nonetheless, the VC market would have to face the quandary of a surplus of liquidity compared to the number of new ideas. 11 Company maturity VC allocation by company growth stage: SF Bay Area Compared with Q3 17, VC investments increased in the Later stage (+6 pts). Early stage startups remain constant, while seed startups and expansion stage declined. Seed startups received a very small percentage of the investments both locally and nationally.
