ShakeOut Chairman Shaun McGuirt Charlotte Pipe & Foundry D e c e m b e r AFS Piedmont Chapter and Friends, Letter From The Chairman I know many of you are wondering: What happened to our Chairman? Unfortunately I have been consumed by some complications from a surgery that I had in September (actually the day after our Asheville meeting). I spent October 13 th to November 13 th in the hospital trying to figure everything out. I have since spent another stint of 4 days in the hospital a few weeks ago. I am happy to say that my health has increasingly gotten better every day since. In the next couple of weeks I hope to pass some milestones that bring me back to work and more importantly to all of you, back to being Chairman. I would like to thank Mike Stowe for stepping up and covering in my absence. From what I understand he planned a very successful November meeting. Mike has updated me on the January meeting and it sounds to be one that you don t want to miss. At this time I am planning to return for the January meeting. I hope to see you all there. 4 Piedmont Chapter Education Report December 2017 Progress through Education By: Paul Huffman, Education Co-Chairman Adam Humphrys, Education Co-Chairman VT FIRE Update We finished another strong semester with over 1,000 outreach touches. This included a Foundry in a Box demonstration for children from underdeveloped neighborhoods hosted by Va Tech. On the academic side, our class attendance is strong with semester enrollment of 17 students for Elementary Casting Lab, 11 students in Advanced Casting Lab, 11 in Physical Metallurgy of Metal Castings, 5 in Modeling, 2 in Test Methods and 24 in Foundry Safety. We also finished the calendar year with over 7,000 lbs. melted, an all-time record for us. VT Fire students conduct a demonstration at the fall open house where 81 attendees attended the student presentation and demonstrations VT FIRE Future Plans Many of you have been involved with the VT Fire development since its inception. Under the guidance of our FEF key professor, Dr. Druschitz, you have observed it develop into a leading metal casting program. Our Chapter is now taking a leadership role along with FEF to embark on a journey to double the size of the Kroehling materials lab. As part of this undertaking we will be working towards a $500,000 fund raising campaign to propel this forward. Our Piedmont Chapter

Education Chairman Paul Huffman presents a Piedmont Chapter donation to Dean Julia Ross New Engineering Dean This year Va Tech welcomed a new Engineering Dean to Blacksburg. In December we had the opportunity to showcase VT Fire to Dean Julia Ross and discuss our future plans. It was the first time she had seen molten metal! Currently 6 students are planning to attend our January Piedmont meeting in Athens, GA. If you plan to attend this meeting please make an effort to meet our students and talk about our industry. An interesting note is that three former members were on campus this fall for the Engineering Recruiting Expo. They were Mattie LaPrade (ACIPCO), Myrissa Maxfield (SSAB) and Gabriella Mirabelli (Caterpillar). In addition, three former students were recruiting at this fall s FEF CIC. They were Mattie, Andy Ondek (AAM) and Jordan Seibert (General Motors). FEF You may recall our VT Fire program achieved a 6 year certification during FEF s Board meeting in Blacksburg. I thought I would highlight some of the team member s comments during this unplanned audit.
